———

~ Age 5 ~

Two squealing kids run around all the adults, weaving through the fabric of their long dresses and pants like and obstacle course.

The run under the table cloth on one of the tables and Y/n giggles as Tewkesbury runs in late. "I win!" She said victoriously.

"You cheated!" He pouts, crossing his arms.

Y/n laughs at her friends' stubbornness, "Dont be such a sore loser Tewks."

"Tewks?" The boy asks his friend.

"You're name is too long. Tewks is nice and short. Just like you!" She said as she pulls them out from under the table, showing off her height of only three inches.

"I'm gonna be tall one day. Just you wait." He says.

"You're also going to be king one day." His mother says, grabbing his arms.

"And Y/n is going to be a lady. We've got no time for misbehaving." Y/n's mother says, the two woman trying to separate the energetic kids.

The two kids look over their shoulders and smile.

~ Age 10 ~

Y/n and Tewkesbury ride their small horses through the courtyard.

"Come on Tewks you can do better than that!" Y/n says, her eyes ahead as she goes faster than the brown haired boy.

"Y/n? Tewkesbury!" Their scholar calls after them.

The two kids giggle and continue riding, the wind wiping their hair.

~ Age 12 ~

Y/n practices her archery as Tewkesbury watches from the window. His father comes up behind him and places his hand on his shoulder. "She's a good one, son."

"What do you mean father?" Tewkesbury asks.

"I mean, she will make a fine queen one day." He says, walking away and leaving his son to his thoughts.

He watches as Y/n hits the bullseye and celebrates, a smile spreading upon his face.

~ Age 13 ~

Y/n and Tewkesbury run through the castle, their laughs echoing down the halls. "Let's play a game Tewks." She laughs.

"Must you still call me that awful nickname?" He groans.

She rolls her eyes. "Yes Tewks. For as long as you're shorter than me. And don't lie, you adore it." She says smugly.

"I do not!" He groans, making Y/n laugh more. "I'm only an inch shorter that you!"

"So, therefore I will still call you Tewks." She smiles.

They slide down the humongous stair case and land at the bottom. Y/n parents come around the corner to find the children laughing on their bottoms, faces flushed from running.

"Y/n! This is unacceptable behavior for a lady!" Her mother cries.

"But mom-"

"Do not talk back to your mother!" Her father snaps. "And look, your poor attitude is rubbing off on the prince."

"Lord Y/l/n I assure you-" Tewkesbury tries.

"Enough! You've got to start acting like a young lady! It's time we knocked some sense into you!" He mother states, grabbing her by the arm.

"Tewks!" Y/n cries, as the boy reaches for her, but is stopped by his mother.

"She needs to learn, son." His mother says flatly. "It's for her own good."

— The Next Morning —

Y/n stands in a simple black dress.

A uniform.

She sniffs and wipes the tears that run down her face. She stands with her luggage, waiting for a carriage.

Tewkesbury comes running out of the castle, Y/n turning as the boy crashes into her arms, both holding onto each other tightly. "Must you leave?" The boy asks sadly.

"I'm afraid I don't have a choice in the matter. They're sending me to a finishing school Tewks." She says sadly.

"What? They mustn't do that! They can't!" He cries. "When will I see you again?" He asks quietly.

"I don't know." She replies. "I will miss you, Prince Tewkesbury." She cries into his shoulder.

His heart breaks as she uses his full name. He hugs her tightly. "Please don't leave. You're my only friend here." He says quietly.

"I'm truly sorry, Tewkesbury." She whispers.

The carriage pulls up and they hear someone clear their throat behind them. The two teens pull apart to see Y/n's mother looking at the two.

"Goodbye Tewks." Y/n says sadly. She pulls away and goes to step into the carriage.

"Y/n wait!" She turn around and he quickly presses his lips to hers, nothing more than a peck. His face goes red all the way up to the tips of his ears and Y/n as well. "Until we see each other again."

~ Four Year Later, Age 17 ~

Tewkesbury walks at his parent's side, his face void of emotion and a silver crown upon his head.

The crown of a prince.

He follows them as they greet the guests of the party. His eyes looking over all of them.

But a girl catches his eye.

She has entered, a light blue dress and her hair styled down, more natural. She's not painted up like the other girls, layer upon layer, but it's more natural.

Tewksbury admired her beauty as she walks with poise, but there's something familiar about her.

It's Y/n!

Tewkesbury's hands start to shake as he sees the girl, his best friend.

But there's something different about her. Her smile doesn't shine as bright. Her eyes don't hold the mischievous spark. She doesn't hold herself as tall.

She's been...broken.

He watches as she walks around, occasionally talking to people with fake smiles.

Tewkesbury frowned as he watched her, her previous energetic personality gone to the wind.

He takes a deep breath and decided to talk to her. He walks up and clears his throat.

Y/n jumps and turns around. When they lock eyes her breath catches. "I suppose you can no longer call me Tewks." He says sheepishly.

Her eyes well up with tears as she sees her old friends. "Tewkesbury." She breathes. Tewksbury is quick to pull her into his arms, missing her embrace. She clutches him quickly, but over his shoulder she sees her mother give her a disapproving glare. She quickly pulls away and wipes her tears. "Look at you! You look like... like a prince." She says with a small smile, Tewkesbury's face showing confusion.

"Y/n are you alright?"

"I'm f-fine." She slightly stutters, looking down.

He tilts her head up and he can see the sorrow in her once vibrant y/e/c eyes. "What did they do to you in there?" He asks.

She sighs stepping back, not being able to look him in the eye. "They made me into a lady of the court."

He goes in front of her and cups her face and she finally meets his eyes, the rest of the party paying no attention to the two teens. "Where's the girl I fell in love with?" He asks lightly.

She feels her heart flutter, just as it did when they were kids, the all too familiar butterflies returning. She looks into the young prince's eyes, seeing the emotion and longing, the crown upon his head. Tewkesbury exhales and leans in, placing his lips to hers.

Y/n melts into the kiss, her arms going to the back of his neck. They pull away after a few seconds. "She's right here." Y/n whispers, leaning her head against his, "Just...buried." She says sadly.

"I like her much better, rather than this 'lady of the court'" He teases.

She grins, "Me too, Tewks. Me too."

"You're not allowed to call me that anymore." He grins cheekily.

She traces his cheek with her thumb and goes to his crown, lifting it before ruffling his hair and putting the crown on crookedly. "It's suits you."
