(Y/n)'s POV
My parents' death replayed endlessly in my mind, continuously pulling my conscious back to its horrible scene. I pulled the blankets tighter around my body, afraid that their murderer would kill me in my sleep.
I was living in a world of fear, a world in which I had unconsciously manifested from my ever-growing worry and anxiety. I longed for this endless chase to stop, but that would only be possible if one of us died.
~Nightmare~
"(Y/n), hurry up and clean up your room," mother ordered.
"Wait, just after I finish this book."
"No, we have an important guest coming over tonight. Our house must look presentable."
"(Y/n), listen to your mother. She's right," added father.
"But-"
"Clean up...now."
"Ugh, fine."
I grumpily put my book down and reluctantly began to tidy up my somewhat messy room. As I was cleaning, I heard the doorbell ring and the front door opening.
Out of curiosity, I headed down the long hallway and to the edge of the grand staircase. A man in a dark coat and overhanging hat greeted my parents with a handshake.
"Good evening, Mr and Mrs (L/n)," he said politely.
"I'm sorry, do we know you? We are expecting some guests tonight so-"
"Yes, I am well aware of that. I have taken the effort to get rid of them as they will no longer be seeing you."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Tonight, your family will die."
My father rushed to shield my mother as the mysterious man aimed a vampire hunter's gun at her. He was one step too late and soon, held my mother...dead in his arms.
I covered my mouth, afraid that I'd give my location away. Hot tears rushed down my cheeks at the realisation of what had just happened.

'(Y/n), get out of here. I'll be right behind you,' my father told me (through telepathy).
'But-'
'I love you...go now!'
He met my tearful gaze, a small smile tugging at his mouth as he unleashed his power on the man. I urged myself to escape while I still had the chance to despite the voice in my mind telling me to turn back.
Just as I was about to escape, a bullet cane flying towards me. I was too late in dodging it and got hit just below the heart. Damn it...
'(Y/n), run!'
Reluctantly, I got up and managed to run outside just before the house exploded. Although I blamed myself for not being able to save my parents, I wouldn't have been able to do anything.
I could barely move and my parents were dead. I might just as well say that my life was ruined...but I couldn't. My father tried to save me so I couldn't give up now.
That was, until a hand grabbed me from behind and held a gun to my head. Bang!
~Nightmare end~
I shot up, trying to calm my raggedy, fast breaths. Every time I fell asleep, this same nightmare would play over and over again until it forced me to wake up.
"(Y/n)."
I jumped at hearing the sudden voice and habitually aimed a hand at the source of the sound. Kaname gently pushed my hand down and sat down on the bed.
"You shouldn't be so alert all the time. Your body's already been greatly weakened from that incident," he exclaimed.
"I-I'm sorry."
"Was it the same dream?"
"Nightmare, Kaname. Not dream."
He placed a hand on my forehead. I felt a warm, calming sensation overcome my body as I found myself starting to relax. Without realising it, I was leaning against his body with his arm around my shoulders.

"Go to sleep," he said.
I stubbornly shook my head and tried to get up but he wouldn't release his grip around me. I reluctantly allowed myself to relax. He placed a hand over my eyes.
I could feel him move around so that I was now lying on his chest. His hand slowly moved away from my eyes. I had them closed, trying to fall asleep like he had asked but it was difficult.
"(Y/n), I can stay here if that's what you want," he softly exclaimed.
Before I got the chance to answer him, the door opened. I could sense Yuki's presence as she entered the room. A part of my heart broke. She was here to see Kaname...and I believed that he wanted to see her.
"Kaname, I came to see you," she exclaimed happily then added, "I can come by later if you want."
"...it's fine. I can leave now."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, (Y/n)'s strong enough to handle it by herself."
"*smiles* Of course she is. She's basically like our younger sister so she has to be strong."
"Yes, you're right, Yuki."
I felt my whole heart break into a million pieces at the realisation of what he had just confessed. I was...just a 'sister' to him. He loved Yuki and the fact that he would leave me for her proved it.
"Sweet dreams, (Y/n)," Kaname whispered before leaving with Yuki.
I gripped the blanket and pulled it over my head, afraid to face the ugly truth more than my everlasting fear. Tears threatened to fall, and I didn't bother to resist it.
I loved Kaname but he did not return my unrequited feelings. It was hard to come to terms with but that was the harsh truth in which I must believe in.
Kaname's POV
"Hey...did you have to do that?" asked Yuki.
"What are you talking about?"
"It's clear that (Y/n) has feelings for you so you didn't have to be so...blunt about how you felt."
"Blunt? I believe I wasn't too harsh."
"I can't even begin to imagine how she must've felt, what with her tragic past and everything."
"Have you forgotten about yours?"
"But she has no one to rely on..."
"Yuki, you're too kind. All you need to know is that I love you and no one else can replace you, not even someone like (Y/n)."
"...that's nice to know."
Yuki and I turned around to face the source of the voice. (Y/n) stood a metre away, a shadow over her eyes. Her body was shaking ever so slightly but whether it was because of the truth or her physically-weakened body...I couldn't tell.
"Kaname didn't mean it-"
"It's okay, Yuki. Deep down inside, I knew that he would never love me," she said quietly before jumping out the window.
I'm sorry, (Y/n) but I don't think I'll ever feel the same...

Shadow Falls
If you wanted to protect someone you loved, how far would you go, and what would you be willing to sacrifice? This question is at the core of this emotional rollercoaster of the book, Shadow Falls: the Rise and Fall of Erida VanIsle. This book emerged from four years of collaborative storytelling centering on the main character, Erida VanIsle, written by author Myra VanIsle. In this book, VanIsle goes beyond the events that led to Erida's sacrifice and explores forty-five years of the cost she paid to protect the sister she loved more than life itself. Shadow Falls explores the family tragedy which led to the separation of two sisters on completely different paths polar opposite of each other. While Erida set upon a path of darkness and power, Myra set out to be a beacon of light and hope bringing justice and peace to others. Be warned, the story VanIsle tells is dark and not easy, because you can't have the light without the dark.
