《The Universe In Us》Chapter 9: Uniting Us

Sometimes a miracle can be so little. So small and so irregular. Sometimes unexpected but always welcomed. So life-changing. Blair had always believed miracles were made-up things by hopeful people that were expecting change. Miracles only existed in perfect worlds, in books and movies. Still, the second she heard him say her name, she knew that she had been thinking so wrong. Maybe she had experieced so many miracles in her life, maybe she just never saw them or thought about them. She knew that she needed to enjoy every little single thing in her life. A sunshine, a good grade, a hug from Serena, her dad coming home from Paris with Roman,.. All of those things were little miracles.

"Blair, look at me". Now she knew she hadn't heard wrong. There was no possible way he could have survived. There was no possible way he could have woken up. Why was everyone here? People only showed up if something bad had happened right? Slowely, she slightly turned her head to the source of the beautiful sound of him saying her name. She was so scared that she was going mad, hearing his voice. For a second she actually thought she had died too and that Chucl and she were in heaven. She had never been really a catholic person, nor was her mother. If heaven existed, hell existed too. She desperately hoped it didn't.

In the hospital bed, about 10 feet from her, he beautiful brown eyes of the young man she hadn't seen in months were staring into hers. He was looking at her. Their eyes were locked into one another. It seemed like hours passed by in that one second she looked at him. He was alive, he was fine! He didn't die! A voice in her head was screaming the same things all over again. Too shocked to say anything, her mouth fell open. The whole room was waiting for her reaction. It was only when Chuck gave her a little smile, reality really fell down on her. In those 5 seconds all of that happened, it seemed like a massive weight had been changed into glue that put the broken pieces of her heart back together. Suddenly, all she wanted to do was to jump into his arms. She couldn't get fast enough out of the bed. She didn't know she was attached to a baxter, but she didn't even care. She just pulled the needle out of her arm, not even caring about the pain it caused. She heard some people protesting but she couldn't care less. Tears were flowing on her cheeks. When she finally reached his bed, she just broke down on the floor. Not this time because of hurt but because of happiness. Serena rushed to her and helped her up. Blair's trembeling hand touched her lovers cheek and she felt that his cheeks were wet too. "Y.. You survived". Chuck smiled brightly and touched her hand. He brought it to his lips and placed a soft kiss onto it.

She lowered her head to his and placed her forehead against his forehead. Her hands were touching his arms and his neck, anywhere where she could feel his warmth. She had missed it so much. "Are you okay?" Blair answered his question with a kiss on his lips. "I am now".

Turned out that Chuck had woken up by the defibirillator the doctors had used to make his heart beat again. Serena had told him everything about what had happened. Blair couldn't help but feel a little jealous of S. She had wished that the first thing Chuck saw again, was her face. Chuck had fallen asleep and even she was a little dissapointed with that, she knew he needed it, even after been 'asleep' for almost 2 months. She had asked the doctor if she could lay next to him, but not before thanking him. Doctor McCallister had been so nice to her and he had saved Chuck's life. The doctor knew it wasn't really responsible of him to say 'yes', but he couldn't help it.

After talking to everyone (yes, also to Brooklyn boy) in the room and smiling happily and feeling better than ever before, she had laid down in his hospital next to him. His face looked so peaceful. She traced the scar on his forehead and placed a kiss on it. She buried her head in his neck and just before she felt asleep she heard him say: "I love you". She looked up at him, only to see him looking at her. She wanted to say it back but he cutted her off with wrapping his arms around her small fragile body. "Blair". He suddenly looked serious and worried: "Have you been eaten full meals?". She looked down and that said enough for him. "I'm sorry. I thought I was going to lose you and.. everything fell apart". He smiled and lifted her chin up. "Don't be sorry. I wouldn't know what to do if the same happened to you". She suddenly started crying again. "Hey, hey. It's okay right? I'm here and we're going to be okay. I'm not leaving you again. Never, I promise". She wiped her tears away and kissed him like it was the last time she would ever. When she started to kiss his neck he said: "Look princess, you have no idea how much I missed you and our mind-blowing love-making, but I don't think we're right now in the right place to do it". Blair giggled and agreed. In silence, they laid together in a comfortable position.

"Marry me. Tommorrow." She whispered into his ear. He looked shocked at her. She sighed and sat up. "I had enough time to think this over. I know what I want and I am going to get it. I saw what was important those 6 weeks you were out. Life's way too short and I don't want live one more day without you as my husband. I know this is a little bit fast but.. I just want to be a Bass, I guess?" She looked at him, waiting for his response to her suggestion. "Don't get me wrong Blair, but I just woke up. I would love you to be my wife, ofcourse, but I think it's better to wait a little bit." Her dissapointed look on her face, broke his heart. "Hey, I still wanna marry you right? I just want it to be special. A woman like you deserves to have the most fabulous wedding ever". Blair smiled and laid her head down on his chest. "O-kay then..". He placed a kiss onto her forehead. He was still a little shocked about what really had happened, but he knew that she was going to stay with him and he couldn't feel more safe and loved. "Happy Valentine's day". He heard her little, cute laugh and knew that everything was going to be okay.

After 3 days, trying to comprehend what had happend, he was discharged from the hospital and was finally able to go home. Blair had asked her mother if she could stay with him. Ofcourse Eleanor couldn't deny that and moved a few things from the Palace to the Empire. Chuck couldn't be more happy about that. He loved her so, so much and he couldn't imagine his life without her anymore. Things were going good, really good. Althought he had some pretty hard nightmares at night, he knew Blair was always immediately by his side to comfort him. He didn't know exactely what had happened anymore but he -sadly- remembered the pain he had felt and how scared he had been. One particular night, his head was laying in the crook of Blair's neck and asked: "Blair.. What happened to Arthur?" Blair tensed up. How could she ever tell that his good friend, the nice driver had died? How could she tell that he was laying in a coffin in the ground? She swallowed and whispered: "I'm so sorry baby..". Chuck knew that he didn't make it. He closed his eyes and Blair embraced him a little bit tighter. "Will you go with me to his grave? Tommorrow?" He looked up and she saw a broken boy looking at her. Her broken boy. "Ofcourse".

The next day, she was dressed in a long coat, because it was still freezing cold in New York City. They were slowly walking to the graveyard together, hand in hand. He knew she always wanted to walk hand in hand, because Blair wanted to whole world to know that she was his, and he was hers. They stopped right before Arthur's grave and Chuck stared at the little picture of him and the wilted white roses. She placed the new ones onto the grave and hugged Chuck. "He'll always keep an eye on you", she spoke quietly in his ear. Chuck nodded and touched the grave. Blair looked full with sympathy to him. To the world, Chuck Bass was a cold, unloveable bussiness man. She knew way better. The fragile but yet so strong and loving man stood up and she intertwined her hands with his.

"Do you maybe.. want to visit your mother?" She knew that the forever lasting pain in his life would never go away. She had told him so many times that it was not his fault, but he never believed her. There hadn't been a second in his life without the pain of thinking that he had killed his own mother when she gave birth to him. Chuck turned to look at her and she was afraid that he would break down because she had asked it. He suprisingly said okay. She knew the place where his mother where resting by heart. Sometimes she had come here alone, just mourning the dead of her lover's mother. She didn't know why, but she sometimes she felt like she had some sort of connection with his mother. They stood quietly before the grave together. "Blair, I love you but can I please have a moment alone?" She smiled and kissed his lips. "Ofcourse, I'm sitting on the bench behind that tree okay?" He nodded and placed another kiss on her lips, this time a little bit longer.

He sighed and placed a hand on his mother's grave. "Hey mom", he whispered quietly. "It's been a long time right?" He smiled to himself. Ofcourse Chuck knew that no one was going to answer, but in some sort of way it helped him. "In the limo... I thought that was it. That my life was over. That I could finally see you. I would love to go to the same place you are right now, mom, but thank God that I didn't die. I don't know what would have happened with Blair..". Chuck smiled lightly and turned his head to look at Blair who was busy with feeding the ducks in the nearby pond. "She is the most amazing, perfect, best girl I have ever met in my life. It's such a privilege to be her financée. I am sure that you two would get along so good". He smiled, visualising Blair and his mother talking about him, drinking coffee and shopping,.. "I'm so luckly to have her. I love her so much mom. You have no idea". He paused and kneeled down to lay the yellow roses down. His mother's favourite ones. "See you next time mom. Take care. Love you." He looked at the grave for about 10 seconds and then walked over to Blair who was sitting now on the bench, waiting for him.

"You okay?" He smiled at Blair and took her hand, looking at the engagement ring and answered: "Always, as long as you are by my side".
