《The Universe In Us》Chapter 7: Nightmare Night

Lunchtime had been great. As promised, he had taken her to an Italian restaurant, that served the nicest pasta she had ever eaten. Unfortunately, he had still work to do and had to leave immediately after the dessert. Blair was not so pleased with that, but he had only one more meeting scheduled in the afternoon. He had to work until 3 p.m., so that gave her another hour of spare time to do something. He had brought her the Palace after their romantic meet-up before driving to the meeting. After a goodbye-kiss, she went to her bathroom to freshen up, wanting to look as pretty as she possible could, for him. She was looking in the mirror at herself, recalling dark thoughts she had been having since she was a child. You are too fat. You are never going to be pretty if you eat that. Throw it up. Her mother had always pushed her to lose as much weight as possible and it still haunted her sometimes. In the corner of her eye, she saw the porcelain bowl standing.
Would she... No, she thought to herself. She had come so far now, trying to overcome her bulimia. Still, she always felt like not beautiful enough. Not good enough. When she had started things with Chuck, things didn't become better. Everytime he looked at her body, a little voice in her head said that she had to loose weight, in order to be still loved by him. One time, she had burst out of tears while she was with him. He had told her afterwards that he didn't care about how much she weighted and how she looked, because he would always find her the most beautiful woman in the world. She had been flattered by that, but she was still insecure about it. She stepped out of the bathroom and closed the door behind her. She was enough.
Blair was sitting on her bed, reading a book she got for Christmas. After she had done that, she had picked out an outfit for the night. Tonight was New Years Eve after all. There was a big party planned with all the biggest it-girls and most important socialites. Ofcourse Blair Waldorf had to attend it, but she didn't know if she was sure she wanted to go. A romantic stay-in night with Chuck sounded way better than talking to people about her dress or her mother's new clothes. Blair didn't care about what people would think if she would enter with Chuck. She guessed that everyone knew now about them. Gossip Girl had sent out numerous blasts about them but for once she didn't really care. She looked at her phone and saw a few texts from Serena. Nate had told her about the engagement and she was so happy for her BFF too. Before Blair could reply she heard the familiar clicking of Serena's heels on the marble floor.
"Oh my God, B! I'm so happy for you!". Serena hugged her tightly and Blair smiled into her shoulder. She lifted up her hand, just as she had done that morning when she was with Nate. "God, it's so beautiful! Wow B! I can't even.. just wow!" Serena was so delighted for her bestie. They continued to chat about how he set everything up and how Chuck had explained everything to Serena. "You know, at first, I was really doubtful of his intentions.. I know he hurt you so many times and I was afraid if you would go back into a relationship with him, the same things would happen. But then he explained to me how much you meant to him and yeah..." Blair smiled again at Serena. "I know, but he's the one S. And we are inevitable, just like you said, remember?" After Blair had told Serena so many years ago about their first hook-up in the limo after she had danced at Victrola, Serena had said that no matter how much they tried to push each other away, they were still inevitable. Blair had been so pissed at her for that, because back then, she thought she made the biggest mistake of her life by having sex with C. "Maybe not all things you say are stupid". Serena rolled her eyes at her. "You better have me as your first bridemaid when you become Blair Waldorf-Bass". Blair grinned and told her she wouldn't have it any other way. Ofcourse S would be the first birdemaid. Thinking about her wedding made her feel so delighted and fulfilled. Just the fact that she was going to be one day a Bass, made her drool over with happiness. "Speaking of your fiancée, where is he?". Blair looked at her Cartier watch and replied: "He has just finished his final meeting for the day". S walked to the mirror and adjusted her hair. "So, what are you going wear tonight to the NYE party?" Blair sighed and showed her the outfit.

She was laying on his couch on top of him. After B had shown her outfit to S and they had discussed the new line of Henri Bendel. Chuck had shown up and the three of them had walked together to the Empire. Serena had told the both of them she needed to go to the manicure and she left, winking at Blair. After they both had a little snack, they had laid down on his couch together. "How was your meeting?" She has asked him, playing with the end of his tie. "Not so good. The company doesn't want to sell their hotel to Bass industries, but i'll figure it out". She smiled at him, putting her hands through his styled hair, now making it messy.
"Now stop talking about work..". He kissed her on her cheek and she sat up. "No, don't go!". She rolled her eyes at his cheesiness and went to the kitchen to get her a glass of water. When she came back, he was still laying in the same position as before. She sat down across of him, in a different couch. He yawned and sat up, never taking his gaze of her. "We still need to talk about things..". Blair swallowed and looked up at him. "You are right. First thing...". And so their talk began. They talked about Eva, about hurt but also about marriage. After a while, everything was cleared out and she felt more relieved than anything. After the serious talk, they both had jumped into bed, to do (yes, again) the thing they wanted and after that, they both showered, for Blair the second time that day, and they made themselves ready to attend the NYE party. Blair's make-up was still at her house, so she needed to get home. "I'm going to call Artur to drive you home, honey". She turned and scoffed at the word 'honey'. "Don't call me that Bass". Chuck grinned and replied: "As you wish, princess". With a kiss on his lips, she left.
Arhtur brought Blair safetly home and she started to do her make-up. A classic look, a little bit of eyeliner and deep red lipstick from Dior. She put her hair into a bun and put on her outfit. As usual, she looked alluring. Chuck was going to pick her up at 8 p.m. When she was putting on her earrings, her phone rang. She sighed and started searching it, but before she could find it, the call ended. She finally found the thing in her purse.
Anonymous Caller. She didn't think twice about it and threw her phone on the bed. She looked outside and saw a big black cloud approaching the Upper East Side. It wouldn't take long for the rain to start falling. What a great weather again. Ugh, sometimes she just hated the weather in New York. A few seconds later, her phone rang again. On the screen, the same words as before could be seen. Anonymous Caller. She frowned and pushed the button with the little green phone on it.
"Hello, am I speaking to Miss. Blair Waldorf?" A voice said to her. She frowned again and thought about who it could be.
"Yes, you are speaking with her". Blair answered a little suspicous about the whole call.
"Miss. Waldorf, I'm sorry to tell you but do you now anyone named Chuck Bass? You were on his speed-dial." The person told her. Blair gasped and swallowed. Her happiness of the day was suddenly gone and had turned into fear and concern for Chuck.

"Yes, yes. He's my fiancée, who are you and what's wrong? Please don't tell me anything bad happened?."
"Miss Waldorf, I am doctor McCallister calling from the Lower Manhattan Hospital. Mr.Bass had been involved in a car accident". And with those 8 words: 'Mr.Bass had been involved in a car accident' her whole world fell apart. She told herself not to panick. Maybe it was not that bad. Maybe he's just okay.
The doctor spoke again: "I think it is best that you come as soon as possible to the hospital, he's laying on IC, a nurse will be waiting for you. I'm sorry Miss. Waldorf".
He was laying on IC. Intensive Care. She felt like someone had ripped her heart out of her chest. She could barely say 'okay' to the doctor. She jumped of her bed, desperate to go as fast as possible to the hospital. She took a long coat with her. Her mother and Cyrus were sitting on the couch when she runned downstairs. "Mom, Cyrus I need to go. Chuck has been in an accident, he's in the hospital". She waited anxiously on the elevator. More and more she became worried about him. Tears were ready to fall behind her eyes, but she managed to keep herself from breaking down. Everything had been so perfect now. They just had cleared out everything. This couldn't be true. Her mom looked shocked at her and said to her: "Blair, wait, i'll go with-". But Blair was already in the elevator, going down. In the elevator she called Nate and Serena, both explaining in pure panick what was going on. They immediately told they both would come as soon as possible to the hospital? She runned outside as soon the elevator touched the ground. It was raining like crazy and but she didn't feel the ice cold drops on her skin. She felt nothing, like life was just sucked out of her. She stepped immediately into the first taxi she saw.
She entered as fast as she could the hospital and she pushed herself past the people waiting in line for the reception. She heard the people protesting but she didn't care.
"Where'sChuck Bass ? He has had an accident" She asked, trying to catch her breath. The nurse looked at her like she was crazy and told her with an attitude: "I'm sorry, but all these people are waiting for something too. Stand back please". Blair couldn't compose herself anymore and started shouting at the damn woman: "I don't fucking care! My fiancée just had an accident and you are going to tell my right now where he is!". Normally Blair Waldorf would never do such a thing, but she was so afraid and vulnerable in that moment. The lady opened her mouth to answer, but right at that moment, someone grabbed her arm.
A middle-aged man, dressed in a doctor's uniform said: "Are you Blair Waldorf? I'm doctor McCallister. Please follow me." Blair just nodded and followed the doctor. She didn't want to ask the question, but she still did it for her own sake. "Is it bad?" She looked up at the doctor, praying to God that Chuck would be okay.
The doctor sighed and he spoke. "Miss. Waldorf, please just sit down here." Blair first couldn't believe what he just had said. She just wanted to go see him! Was that so hard for everyone to understand? The doctor spoke again. "Mr.Bass had -as I told you- been involved in a car accident. The driver of his limo, Arthur, couldn't make it. I'm sorry". Blair closed her eyes. The world could be so cruel. Hours ago, she was in the limo herself and Arthur was driving her home. Now he was just dead?! She didn't even want to think how crushed Chuck would be if he heard it. Arthur had been his driver since he was a little boy. Mr. McCallister continued talking: "Luckily, Mr.Bass didn't stay any longer in the limo. It exploded just seconds after he got out." Blair didn't know what to say. "Unfortunately, he was hit by a piece of metal, and it perforated his right lung. The middle cardiac vein in his heart was also damaged. He has broken a few ribs and a leg". Blair's tears that were hiding behind her eyes, were now just running over her cheeks and she was unable to stop it. The doctor looked at her with a lot of compassion. "Normally, we are able to fix all those things. It just will take a lot of time". Something told her the doctor hadn't said everything about his condition. "I'm sorry to tell you Miss.Waldorf but.. after the accident, he went into shock. The crash is a huge traumatic experience. That leaded to him falling unconsciousness. We just have finished the surgery to fix the vein in his heart and his lungs, but i'm afraid your fiancée is in a coma". Blair just stared at the white table. Coma. That meant they didn't know when he was going to wake up. It could be tonight, next week or in 8 years. She totally lost it at that moment. She completely broke down and even the doctor had to wipe away a tear. He had seen so many accidents and so many crying family members, but something about the young fiancée and her lover made him feel really sad. She tried to cover up her tears, but she couldn't ofcourse. All she felt was pain. When she felt the familiar arms of Serena and Nate surrounding her, she blacked out.
When she saw light again, she was still in the hospital. She had hoped it was all a bad nightmare. Serena and Nate were both sittting next to her and she lifted her head of Serena's shoulder. They had been crying too. "Oh, Blair". Serena hugged her and Nate put his hand on her shoulder. It was his way of saying: "He'll be okay". She looked at the clock. It was 11.27 p.m. Almost midnight. Almost a new year. "Can I see him?" She asked with a tiny voice, sounding like a little girl. Serena shared a look with Nate. "Blair. He's isn't looking pretty. I don't think it-". Blair turned her head at her ex-lover. She didn't even have to say anything. She just stared at the ring, he gave her just 24 hours ago. They were both so happy then. She started crying again and Serena could just barely hear what she was saying. "I just love him so much, S". S replied: "I know B, I know".
"He's in here". Doctor McCallister had shown her the way to the room where Chuck was laying. Blair looked at the doctor and quietly whispered: "Thank you". The doctor gave her a little smile and nodded before leaving her alone. She took a deep breath before entering the room.
