《Road Trip! [Kagehina]》Chapter 10

Hinata's usually rather peachy skin had turned a little, but only slightly, darker in the time spent in the sun. His hair was glowing the same colour of the sun as it set behind the seemingly endless strip of water, and his lips looked soft and smooth. The brown colour in his eyes usually turned hazel when the sun shone brightly, on days like today, it had been noted.

But of course, it was only Kageyama who noticed these minor details. Who, throughout the recent days, had watched over him silently while devising a plan to win him back. It wasn't that Kageyama had lost Hinata to someone. It was his own stupidity and quick reaction that had gotten himself into that position. He had no choice but to apologize for his wrongings and make it up to Hinata. Though he had only vague ideas of where to start. And as the night sky settled, and the warm glow of the fire hovered in the air, Kageyama settled himself back against a large, sturdy log, that stretched a long distance, meaning a good few people could lean back on it too. He sighed, holding out a stick gently towards the fire. On it were two plump marshmellows that looked like small pillows, being slowly roasted- just the way Kageyama liked it. Looking around, he felt at ease. Everyone here was smiling, laughing, loud with excitement; but calm.

As usual, the third years were all talking amongst one another, but now Ennoshita had joined the discussion too. Nishinoya was working away at Asahi's hair, yet again. He was choosing a different braiding style, carefully splitting the brown hair into a middle parting. Tsukishima was listening to music, or perhaps not. No matter if he had headphones on or not, the blonde blocker always seemed to be able to hear just enough to make salty remarks. Yamaguchi was by his side, his head partially resting against Tsukishima's shoulder as he flicked through a newer volleyball magazine, which was probably someone else's. Hinata was talking with Tanaka, someone who could always take his mind off things. The event by the cliff that morning had given Kageyama chills, seeing Hinata so soulless and absent of life. Suddenly, Tanaka stood up, probably aiming to grab more marshmellows from the bag besides Sugawara. He had muttered something to Hinata, threw a sideways glance at the packet and casually strolled over. Leaving Hinata to sit on his own, Kageyama, so badly, wanted to go over and hold his hand. But Kageyama was restricting himself, he would just have to wait. It shouldn't be too long till they were sent off to their tents. The fire that reflected in Hinata's eyes almost seemed like the perfect metaphor for what Kageyama thought Hinata felt like. Angry and hurt by the scarring flames.

That was just it.

To simply put it:

Once you've touched the flame, you've touched it. That scar will be there for a long time, if not forever. And there's no going back.

Kageyama sighed, fiddling with his hands. He held them together loosely, not bothering to roast nor eat any more marshmellows. The barbeque dinner they had been cooked had filled him up generously, and Kageyama would find himself with a large stomach ache if he continued. His nimble fingers traced shapes against his palms, zoning out and getting lost for a few minutes. Hinata took the opportunity to analyse Kageyama's usual blank face. Though today, Hinata could sense something else. Kageyama seemed to be shuffling, awkwardly moving about and always in his head. He sensed worry, anxiety. Something that was immensely bothering him. He leant back, not wanting to bother with that. It had been a good day, Hinata had certainly had fun. Nothing, Hinata thought, should make it any worse.

Daichi stood up once the conversations were dying down, it was around 11PM and some were already half-asleep. "I think it's time for us to sleep, no?" He laughed, a charming smile spread across his face. It almost seemed as though the waves had become more gentle, making less noise, in hopes to listen to Daichi too. "We've had a good day, and tomorrow we'll be going somewhere even better! Though Sugawara and I have chosen to keep that a secret from you for now," At that, Sugawara and grinned mischievously, and several teammates looked intruiged. Even for a moment, a thought flashed across everyone's mind in unity: "Where was this new destination?" "They probably have no idea where to go next. I'll bet they're bluffing," Tsuki whispered under his breath with an unconcerned expression, making Yamaguchi giggle softly. "So we'll see you all tomorrow morning, sleep well!" He waved, putting out the fire, collecting all the spare wood and helping everyone settle.

Around twenty minutes later, everyone had climbed into their sleeping bags. The beach was cleared, and now it was only the sand, the tents, and the slightly distant sound of the waves. It was soothing, really, to be so warm even without the sleeping bag. The weather put the duo at ease slightly, but Kageyama would not let this last long. After he was certain that everyone else had fallen asleep, Kageyama reached out slowly, pulling his hand from under the cover. He prodded Hinata gently on his back, in hopes to grab his attention. Giving no response, Kageyama moved up, poking his cheek. Laying down still, Hinata was as silent as ever, but his eyes were open. Hinata pulled his soft cover over his head, refusing to talk. He didn't need this right now; he wanted to talk tomorrow. "Hi-na-ta.." Kageyama called in a quiet tone, waiting a good minute before sighing heavily. Getting nothing from Hinata, Kageyama had no choice. The setter got up, and pulled back the cover on Hinata's sleeping bag. He then climbed in, as Hinata automaticaly shuffled to the end, giving them just-about enough room. Kageyama's longer arm went over Hinata and onto the other's hand, placing it there gently. His stomach was against Hinata's back, as he whispered gently, "I don't know where to begin. But, Hinata, if you trust me, give me one last chance. If i screw this up, you have every right to hate me forever," Kageyama's voice was calm and collected, but in his own mind he was pleading, hoping, begging Hinata to at least listen. "Meet me at the cliff edge before an hour has passed. If you don't come, then I get it, you're mad and don't want to talk things out. And if that's what you want, then I'll avoid you as best I can and will only set to you in volleyball as your teammate." He wondered if, being pressed up so close to him, Hinata could hear Kageyama's heart beat. It pumped so quickly, so consistently, it'd be a wonder if he couldn't.

Kageyama then climbed out, unzipped the tent and left, closing it back up afterwards to ensure that the warm would stay in. Hinata rolled onto his back, tormented. He had before sixty minutes passed to decide what he would do. But already, without thinking, it was obvious as to what he would choose. He sat up, and slipped on his shoes, just as Kageyama had done. It was too hot for jackets or anything of the sort.

Kageyama was standing at the cliff edge, looking out at the blank summer sky, dotted with large stars. The moon shone ever so brightly that night, full and relfecting in the crystal waters. But still, even though Kageyama had such a lovely setting, his mind was a mess. Thoughts swirled all around his head and he couldn't take it much longer. He hoped if Hinata had decided to come, he would be here soon.

Hinata had left about fifteen minutes after Kageyama, palms sweaty as he walked up the path towards the cliff. He passed where their old camping area was, and took in a deep breath. He was shaking a little, which was surprising to Hinata. He knew he was anxious, but he didn't know he was that anxious! Taking slow steps, he reached out, pushing leaves and branches out of his way. The open space revealed Kageyama standing at the edge, fists clenched with worry. "U-uh? Kageyama..?" He said with shortened breath, standing a good few steps away from him. The breeze washed over them for a second, filling in the pause. "I'm really glad you came," Kageyama mumbled, face slightly red, though Hinata couldn't see it. But it was the honest truth, and Kageyama had decided that to resolve the problem he needed to be a bit more honest with Hinata. Hinata studied Kageyama carefully, his stomach felt like it was twisting. He took another breath, and said strongly, with a small stutter, "S-so-what did you want to say?"
