《Road Trip! [Kagehina]》Chapter 8

Hinata and Kageyama were both wide awake. In an awkward silence, neither of them dared to speak. The problem with being in such a small space was, that when you're with someone you'd rather avoid at the time, it could prove very difficult. And in the tent, in the middle of the night, it was exactly that.

The very problem was their argument could be solved in some very easy and simple steps.

But the problem with that was their unchanging judgement of the situation.

Kageyama had lashed out at Hinata initially due to sheer embarrassment and doubt, which he converted into anger over the fact that he wanted to make sure about how he felt. It had come down to him being caught out before he was ready to admit, and this had made him speechless, answering in the only other way he knew was normal for him towards Hinata: yelling. Though it had gotten out of hand, Kageyama kept thinking over and over about how he regretted all those angry and harsh words. He wished he could take each and every one of them back.

And Hinata, on the other hand, should be consider somewhat of a fragile glass. Once it's dropped, there's no putting it back together. And in this case, the arguement was the drop, and neither of them could put the pieces back together. Hinata had overheard Kageyama, though he wished he hadn't. This whole situation probably wouldn't have happened if he had pretended not to hear. And it was while he was listening to Kageyama that he had realised what he felt for Kageyama wasn't friendliness, but love. The word got caught in his mind, he would have to repress all these feelings after what Kageyama had said. It made him deeply upset to know that Kageyama thought of him that way, but he would just have to deal with it.

Kageyama opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out. He had nothing to say. He had to think of something. There had to be some way to resurrect things. But all he could do was think about it, and ask Sugawara tomorrow.

Eventually, Hinata could hear the heavy patterened breath escape Kageyama's lips. Though he wasn't entirely sure if Kageyama was actually asleep or not. Hinata looked over, sighing heavily, and mumbled, "I just wish you'd say something. I'm getting over you, I promise," He paused, and then heard Kageyama rustle about in his sleep. "And then maybe we could talk over things.." Hinata pursed his lips, turning over and closing his eyes gently. He prayed that Kageyama hadn't heard, but in fact, he had.

Bugs were making noises outside, and the trees were gently rustling in the slow and calm breezes. The morning sun rose up in the sky, painting oranges and pinks. Kageyama's eyes fluttered open, with only a little recollection of what Hinata had said yesterday night. He sat up quickly, making his head ache momentarily. Hinata was still asleep, Kageyama could see the curly orange hair peep out from the covers. He reached for his bag tiredly, yawning. After changing quickly, he slipped on his shoes and climbed out the tent. The air was unbelievably fresh compared to the suburban area they had been in previously. And Kageyama needed just that. It was early morning, and everyone was to be at the camp by 9 for breakfast if they were to wander off before then. Kageyama checked his watch, he had at least an hour and a half before breakfast would begin, and looked around for a good place to sit in peace. He spotted a small mountain area that didn't look to difficult to climb, and began making his way towards it. He walked leisurely, surrounding him were acres of tall and short trees, taking about fifteen minutes to reach the foot of the mountain. It was the size of a tall hill, but looked quite steep. Luckily, there was a small path carved around the side of it, making it an easy journey for Kageyama. Once he reached the top, Kageyama could see over the crowd of trees, upon the cliff line that was close to their camp, and out into the sea. Behind him, if he looked carefully, he could spot the main road and motorway they had originally travelled on. The sun was reflecting against the waves, and all in all it was a beautiful sight.

"Funny seeing you here," A familiar motherly voice chuckled from behind him, "Great minds think alike, I guess," The voice chuckled, as Kageyama turned round, startled. It turned out to be Sugawara, who had "coincidentally" chosen to do a little morning hike. "It's really beautiful, huh?" Sugawara smiled, perching down onto the mountain with Kageyama- both their legs were dangling over edge. Kageyama nodded, his mind was a mess and he wasn't sure talking about other things would help him right now. However, Suga could tell the younger one was troubled, and turned to him. "So tell me what's going on, hm? What's inside that head of yours, because clearly something's eating away at it," Kageyama thought for a moment, considering it. Sugawara was definitely someone he could trust. Setter to setter, friend to friend, first year to third year. "I-I think I love Hinata..?" He mumbled, making it sound like a question. He then went on to explain their argument in detail, and anything leading up to this point. "I knew it," Sugawara smiled, his face displaying a wide grin. "I knew it!" Kageyama looked confused for a second before Sugawara filled him in: "I just had a little hunch that your argument was had something to do with what we talked about in Tokyo Tower. It only made sense,"

"Ah, I-I see.." Kageyama nodded understandingly. "B-but please don't tell anyone else," he pleaded, followed by Sugawara winking and putting a finger to his lips. "Your secret's safe with me," Sugawara paused to take in a large breaths of fresh air, smiling as it filled his lungs, "So, did you take my advice?" He asked curiously, referring to what he had said last night at the campfire. Kageyama nodded, "It's all I've been thinking about. I want to say something, or prove to him that he can at least trust me again, but.. I've no idea how." He looked to Sugawara in search of help. "Now, let's see.. When me and Daichi are in arguments we normally have a day off to think, and then whichever one of us is in the wrong normally does something to say sorry or apologizes. It just kind of.. Happens. I guess that's what's nice about relationships," The gray-haired boy chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment. It took Kageyama a few moments to process what had been said before he stuttered, "Y-You and Daichi are..?" Trailing off confusedly. Sugawara's eyes widened in surprise. "You didn't know? Nobody told you? Geez, I thought everyone on the team knew haha. I'm very surprised Ryuu didn't mention a thing! Yes, Daichi and I are a couple. In a way, that's kind of how I could tell how you and Hinata felt about one another. It was really obvious to me," Sugawara laughed softly, "But pretty much everyone knows! I think even Nekoma, too! But this was ages ago. We're coming up to a year now, I believe," He smiled encouragingly. "And trust me when I say that Hinata looks at you the same way you look at him; Like a million stars lit up in your eyes and shone, so beautifully, at the sight,"

Like a million stars lit up in your eyes and shone, so beautifully, at the sight

The words helped Kageyama understand everything a little better as he walked back towards the camp. The grass was the greenest he'd ever seen, and the plants seemed so perfectly in place but so untouched. As he found himself in the small clearing he could smell roasting meat. Kageyama licked his lips. Someone was cooking up sausages. It smelt so, so, good. And after all the stress he felt he really needed a good meal. Unfortunately, Hinata still wouldn't look at him. And though the two were progressively (but at a painfully slow pace) becoming more comfortable around one another again, if they didn't fix it soon their bond would never be the same. Both of them knew that, but both of them wouldn't risk making the situation any worse.

But that was when it happened.

Sugawara tugged Kageyama's shirt, whispering, "He's over by the cliff, walk down that small covered up path straight ahead," And walked away with a cheeky smile. Needless to say, Sugawara very much enjoyed this little match-maker game. But if anything he just wanted the boys to finally sort things out. Kageyama nodded, his empty plastic plate had been removed from his hands by Sugawara without him even noticing. He pushed a few overhanging branches out the way to find a seclusive area, an open space. It was quiet. If you listened hard enough, you could hear the rest of the team's laughter coming from behind them. It was an empty area of grassy cliff, that hung over a long and open sea. It made sense that he would be here. It was apparent they both needed time to think. Hinata was sat with his short legs dangling, when the waves were big he would occasionally feel a tiny droplet of water on his ankles. But he could definitely feel Kageyama's presence behind him. He bit his bottom lip, wondering if Kageyama had come here for a specific reason- though he knew that was obvious. Walking silently, Kageyama sat next to him and stared straight ahead with an unreadable expression. Hinata was fidgeting with his hands, cheeks tinted pink.

"You always do that when you're flustered," Kageyama stated blankly after a few minutes, shattering the ice that was silence.

"Oh, sorry," Hinata mumbled, not sure what else to say. He didn't want to make Kageyama even angrier with him than he already was.
