《The 1975 Imagines》Priority - Matty

Work. The only thing keeping you apart from your boyfriend, the only issue that meant you couldn't tour the world with him and his band, the only thing preventing you from doing exactly what you wanted to do.

University was difficult. It felt like you had to work ten times as hard for what you wanted compared to everyone else, so you did. Almost every day was spent in the library, working hard to ensure that your work stood out from the rest to encourage your teachers to recommend you to their associates in the field, and they did.

You were thrown straight into the world of work which you were grateful for at the time, but as time went on you realised that you hadn't really 'lived'. You were so ambitious before university, you wanted to travel and see everything you could.

Meeting Matty didn't help your wanderlust - he had toured the world more times than you could count and you were yet to join him on a trip. Sure, you could fly out sometimes and watch a couple of shows, but your burning desire to accompany the boys on the bus for a long period of time had yet to be filled. You were equally close with George, Ross and Adam and this made it even harder when they had to leave, you had hardly anyone to hang out with and instead spent most of your time on facetime to Matty to fill the time.

At present, however, they were home for a while before they had another long trip away. The house you and Matty shared felt so much more homely when he was around, and even doing nothing was better with him around.

You were sat on the sofa, flicking through the channels aimlessly as he plonked himself down next to you.

'You alright?' He asks as he notices your apprehensiveness.

'I'm fine.' You reply with a smile as you lean your head on his shoulder. 'Just thinking about how you're gonna have to leave again.'

'Don't think about that.' He reassures you as he rubs your back. 'Think about how I'm here now, and how I'll be back from touring so soon.'

'I guess. It just never feels like it goes quickly when you're not here.' You reply sadly.

'Well don't focus on that then, focus on how we're together now, and we can enjoy each other whilst I'm here.' He hints further by drawing patterns up your bare thigh with his cold hand.

You smile into the kiss as he wraps you around his body and carries you upstairs before throwing you down on the bed and taking off his shirt, reminding you quite how much you'd miss him when he wasn't here with you.

You wake up early the next morning, still tight in Matty's grasp from the night before. You attempt to shuffle out of his grip without waking him which fails within seconds.

His eyes open slowly and he stretches as he pulls you back into him.

'Morning sunshine.' You laugh as he fails to keep his eyes open. 'Today's the day.'

'Today's the day indeed. But dont remind me.'

He had to leave by 12 to meet the others, so you spend the rest of the morning chatting about tour and packing slowly, both of your procrastinating tendencies not helping at all.

But 12 came soon enough and you were waving him goodbye once again. He held you tight as you let yourself get consumed with his body before he let go slowly and kissed you on the forehead.

'Try not to miss me too much. I'll facetime you tonight.' He says.

'I might be busy with one of my other boyfriends.' You joke back.

He flips you off before blowing you a kiss and getting into the van, and you watched as he slowly drove away.

And that was it. Gone again.

This tour felt different. They were going to all of their usual countries which felt the same but the actual tour included them headlining Reading Festival in the middle. You had been going to the festival for years previous to working full time so it hurt knowing that you had to watch him and his band headline the festival through a livestream. You knew it hurt him, too. He didn't want to show it because he understood it was out of your control but having you there would make such a difference to him. From the BBC Introducing Stage to headlining, The 1975 had come so far but it didn't feel right without you seeing it too.

The next few days were slow. The boys were in Europe playing shows every evening but Matty never failed to ring you everyday, updating you on what was going on and asking you about your days, which weren't very busy but he liked to ask anyway.

Work was boring, you didn't feel the passion and excitement for it anymore, but knew it was safe and necessary for what you wanted to do in the future.

A week or so later you were pottering around the house, doing odd jobs to fill the time when your phone began to ring. It was George.

'Hey G.' You say as you see a dark screen in front of you. 'Are you there?'

'Yeah I'm here, I need to talk to you quick.' He whispers really quietly.

'Okay, what's up?'

'I know you've probably tried everything but is there any way you can come and watch the Reading set? I dont know if he's spoken to you about it but I don't think Matty's even looking forward to it because you can't be there to watch him. I know it sounds selfish but we all want you there so much but I know its an impossible situation.' He rambles.

'George...'

'I know, I know. I just thought there might be a chance.'

As you were about to tell him it was impossible, a rush of confidence comes over you and you begin to debate your options. Your job is helpful, sure. But you could get another. You don't love it, you don't like anyone you work with, it's good money, sure. But that money isn't going anywhere right now. So you could just quit. You could, but you wouldn't. Wouldn't you? Why not get out of a lifestyle that you hate and support your boyfriend, the love of your entire life, at the most incredibly massive show of his life. You wouldn't have a job so you wouldn't have to come home after it, either...

'I'll be there.'

'What?'

'I'll be there. And I'll join you guys on tour after.'

'Are you being serious?' He questions with urgency.

'Dead serious. But I need to go sort some things out, I'll text you though. Don't tell Matty.'

You end the call.

No way you were doing this. You weren't spontaneous and you definitely didn't make rash decisions like this. But fuck it.

You sent a shitty email to the office and said you'd pick your stuff up next week. You felt rude but your excitement for seeing Matty overpowered everything and you had come to terms with your decision and could now let yourself feel excited.

You texted George your plan, you would get the train down to the festival and get your stuff to their van with some help from their team and meet him backstage, and then surprise Matty.

The days felt long, but the day of the festival was nearing.

It was Friday. Reading Fest day.

You ordered an uber and double checked you had everything to be away for an entire two months. You had tried to pack lightly in order for the train journey to be not too stressful but had failed as per usual.

The train journey was quick and you felt your heart beat through your chest as the sun began to set - their show would be starting in an hour and you didnt have much time to get there.

You recognised one of their crew at the station and greeted them gratefully, messaging George a 'thank you' for sorting it out. He drove you to the festival through a series of winding back roads, and your palms had begun to go clammy.

You saw George in the distance and he engulfed you in a massive hug before helping you put your suitcase in their van to be put in the bus later on.

'Fucking hell Y/N, what've you packed in here?'

'Basically my entire life, but who cares.' You laugh and grab onto his arm and he leads you to a small backstage area.

'I told them I was going to the toilet so they're gonna be wondering where I am, I need to go find the others. We're having some pictures taken first and then we'll be getting ready so give it 15 minutes and then follow the blue arrows, okay?' He explains.

You nod in response and wave as he leaves you to find the others, including Matty, who was so unbelievably close to you and he didn't even know.

The longest 15 minutes ever had finally passed and you crept quickly. You heard his voice as he was probably bossing someone around and as you turned the corner you saw him standing there. His back was to you and he hadn't seen you yet, but Ross had caught your eye and his face lit up in response.

You bring your finger to your mouth to signal him to not say anything as you walked slowly towards your boyfriend.

'A minute to go lads, got any last words?' He says loudly to the other three.

'Smash it, rockstar.' You say from behind him, causing him to jump at the sound of your voice and spin round so quickly he trips over his own feet.

Emotions clearly run high as you feel yourself being engulfed in his body, him hugging you tighter than he ever has before.

'What... the fuck... are you doing here?' He asks, baffled.

'I'm here to watch you headline Reading fucking Festival.' You laugh in response.

'But, how? How is this even possible?'

'You have George to thank, actually. Oh and I'm not just here for Reading, I'm coming with for the rest of the tour too.'

He pushes you back in shock and buries his head in his hands.

'No fucking way. I knew you were good for something George.' He jokes as George responds by flipping him off.

'Are you gonna say hi to me properly then Matthew?!' You tease as he comes back towards you and kisses you hard, reminding you how much he loves you without having to say anything.

'Hi, Y/N.'

You smile in response and take a step back as the four of them are called to get ready to go on stage as 'The 1975' begins.

George grabs you and thanks you as him and the others get ready for their biggest performance to date.

Matty pulls you in for one last hug.

'I love you, Y/N. You'll never know what this means to me.'

He runs off to get on stage and you watch in awe as he has the entire crowd encapsulated with his presence, he sings with as much passion as always and is clearly having the time of his life.

Watching him proves to you that nothing you did was in vain and you know for a fact that this man has your entire heart, and you made the absolute right decision by choosing to spend every minute possible with him by your side.
