《Daughter of Mortis》Confrontation

Two days later, there had still been no sign of Kein Rei or Jax. The twin moons of Lothal rose steadily and a cool night breeze filled the grassland. Ania lay back on the Redemption's roof. She let out a sigh and closed her eyes.

Footsteps clanked on the sides of the Redemption and a familiar presence slid around her. "That didn't sound like a very happy sigh." Ezra sat down beside her.

"It's called, I'm waiting to see what's going to happen. I don't believe this peace will last."

"You haven't had any visions or nightmares since Mortis, though. That's good, right?"

Ania opened her eyes and sat up. "I'm not sure. At least when I had visions I was somewhat aware of what could happen. Now, we're all in the dark."

"Well, we've lived in the dark before. We survived then and we will now," Ezra pointed out.

Ania glanced at him with a smirk. "When did you grow up?"

Ezra laughed and rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "Hey, a few years of fighting the Empire can do that to a person."

Ania snorted. "You're telling me." Ezra held an arm out in silent invitation. Ania scooted closer and let him wrap his arm around her.

"Call me crazy, but these past two days have been pretty boring," Ezra admitted.

"Yeah. It's definitely a change of pace." Ania watched the moons, moving slowly across the sky.

"Do you ever get the urge to just jump in a ship and leave?" Ezra blurted out. "Just...forget about everything and make yourself not care. Escape the war, I mean." He turned his face away. "I sound crazy and treasonous, I know."

"No, you don't. You sound like any sane person would when they're tired of fighting." She leaned her head against his shoulder. "I know what you mean. I've wanted to do it so many times and I almost have, but..." she bit her lip, "then I remember who I've lost in this fight. Ahsoka, Kanan, Commander Sato...all people important to me. They died fighting for this cause and I want to honor what they fought for as well. I've lost people during this war. I'll lose more before it ends but I have to believe that I'm making a difference. It's more than I ever did in the Empire."

"Wow. You've thought about it a lot."

"Yeah, sometimes I get bored on missions," she said with a laugh.

A howl broke across the grasslands. Ania lifted her head, instantly alert. "Do you think it was your wolf?" Ezra asked.

Ania let herself float across the grasslands. Where are you?

"Waiting."

For what?

"For you."

The howl echoed again as Ania snapped back to herself. "It's her all right. She said she's waiting for me."

"For what?" Ezra raised an eyebrow.

"I'm not sure. I'm going to find out." Ania stood and jumped off the Redemption. Ezra landed behind her a few moments later. Several speeders were parked just inside the perimeter fence. Ezra jumped onto one and Ania climbed on behind him. "She was towards the North," Ania said.

Ezra nodded and they took off. One of the officers waved at them as they flew past. Ezra tipped him two fingers. The moons continued to rise, bathing the grasslands in white light. Ania tightened her arms around Ezra's waist, the breeze strengthening as they picked up speed.

She cast out again, calling to the wolf. Help us find you.

"Follow the moons."

"Ugh." Ania rolled her eyes.

"What'd she say?"

"Follow the moons."

Ezra glanced back at her. "She said what?"

Ania pointed to the moons. "Follow the moons."

The twin moons had halted in the middle of the sky. Below them, the silhouette of mountains was in view. Ezra urged the speeder on faster. They were flying over the grasslands now. Ania cast her senses out again. She caught a glimpse of herself, flying towards something.

Ezra slowed as they neared the mountains. They jumped off the speeder as the loth wolf howled again. "Isn't this where we found the Gray Jedi Temple?" Ezra pointed out.

"I think so." She sent her senses out again. "She's waiting for me at the temple." Ania took the lead and headed towards the temple mountain.

The large white loth wolf was sitting before the temple when they approached. "I have been waiting for you."

"Woah. That's not at all what I thought she'd sound like," Ezra interrupted.

"You can hear her?" Ania cast a confused look at him.

"He can hear me because I've allowed him to. Please, come." The wolf stepped aside, revealing the already open temple.

"What do we need in there?" Ezra asked.

"Not you. Only her, this time."

"Uh, no way. What if something..." Ezra began.

"Ezra," Ania put a hand on his arm, "I'll be fine. Wait out here."

Ezra crossed his arms and let out a resigned sigh. "You know, normally I wouldn't listen to you."

"I know." She smirked at him before following the wolf into the temple. The door slid shut behind them. "So, do you have a name?" Ania asked.

"No, I have no given name."

"Would you like me to give you one?"

"You may, if you like. Many guide's are given names by those who are lost."

Ania raised an eyebrow at that, but said nothing. After a few moments, she had decided. "What about Ro?"

"It is simple and easy to remember. You may call me Ro if you like." The wolf turned down a corridor. She had to duck her head, to keep it from hitting the ceiling. Ro's massive paws left imprints in the dust.

"Why did you bring us here?"

"You completed your last task. The two have been united and are slowly becoming a part of you. However, there is still a danger," Ro began.

"Of course. Isn't there always." Ania rolled her eyes. "What is it?"

"The Emperor is seeking the Dark One. If he finds Him, he will be able to permanently destroy all that is good within the galaxy."

They entered a room with murals on the walls. It was different than the first one Ania had seen. The murals were all of the Emperor, Son, and the Sith. She headed over to one wall and traced a hand down the mural.

"How? I destroyed the dagger. It's the only way to separate us."

"I only know what the Force shows me. I offer you this warning; if it comes to a choice between your life and someone else's, you must choose yourself. It will be difficult, but if you perish, the souls will be freed because they have not fully become a part of you. If that happens, the Emperor will be able to capture them and use them himself. You must survive until the souls have integrated with you."

Ania shook her head. "You really think it may come to that?"

"You've seen it before. I warn you, do not let your feelings for that boy dissuade you from what must be done." Ro's yellow eyes gleamed fiercely.

"No, I won't let anything happen to anyone. The Jedi taught that attachment is weakness but it's also a source of strength. Ezra...he's the most important person in my life and I won't let anything happen to him." She narrowed her eyes, meeting Ro's stare.

"Hm. We will see."

Ania twisted around, confused. Ro was gone. Even her large paw prints had disappeared. Ania shook her head. "It's always the same thing. I won't let anything happen to any of my friends." She looked back at one mural. "Especially Ezra." The mural depicted a Sith Lord with a dagger raised over a victim, laid on an altar.

Ania shuddered and ran towards the temple entrance. The stone walls seemed to press in around her as she ran. Ania swallowed down the feeling and kept running. At last, she reached the stone entrance. The door opened slowly and she burst out in a cloud of dust. The door slid shut and the temple receded into the ground.

Ania landed on her knees and took a few deep breaths. Ezra was at her side instantly. "Hey, what happened? Are you ok?"

"Yeah," she said at last. "I'm fine. I just panicked." Ezra pulled her to her feet.

"What did the wolf say?"

"Ro. Her name is Ro." Ania lifted a hand to her chin. "She said that the Emperor still wants the Son's spirit and that he can get it if he kills me."

"But that doesn't make any sense. We destroyed the dagger so you can't be separated."

"Their souls haven't combined inside of me yet and until they do, if I'm killed, they can be separated again," Ania explained.

Ezra raised his hands to his head and sighed. "This just gets better and better."

Ania glanced at the sky. The moons had moved again, but sunrise was still hours away. "Come on. We'd better get back to base before we're missed."

They climbed onto the speeder and flew out to the grasslands. Ania's thoughts flew as fast as the speeder. What if our vision really does come true? What will happen if the Emperor succeeds?

The blast came out of nowhere. The speeder rocked as the engine burst into flames. "Jump!" Ania screamed. She let go of Ezra and threw herself into the grass.

The breath was knocked out of her for a few moments as she hit the ground. Ezra landed a few feet away and coughed. The speeder went flying into one of the cone shaped mountains and exploded into flames. A familiar figure stepped through the smokey haze, followed by another.

Ania pulled herself to her feet and activated her lightsabers. Ezra scrambled back towards her, pulling out his blade as well. Jax and Kein Rei leveled blasters at them. Kein drew a plasma blade and reversed it in his grip.

"Well, well, well." Kein grinned broadly. "Long time, no see, Bonteri."

"Congratulations. You got my name right for once," Ania sneered. "Come to do some more of your masters dirty work?"

"Well, I had thought about it but orders were to kill you and Bridger on sight. However, I think it'd be more fun and profitable to take you in alive. Bridger will have to die of course. Our ship's cell is only for one."

"Didn't think you'd get away that easy, did you, Commander?" Jax snarled. "I'm glad I was here to see your downfall."

"We'll see," Ania said. She lunged, not bothering to wait. Her lightsabers swung and hit empty air as Kein ducked beneath her blow. Ania jumped as he attempted to sweep her feet. She sent a kick into his stomach.

"Well done. I see you've been practicing," Kein gasped, gripping his stomach. Farther away, Jax fired a few shots at Ezra, which were easily deflected.

"There wasn't much else to do. I must say, I've been disappointed by you lately." Ania caught his wrist as he attempted to swing a plasma blade towards her. She jammed his elbow up. Kein cried out and the blade fell from his grip. She crunched her knee into his chin and pushed him away. Kein staggered, rubbing his jaw.

Ania risked a glance at Ezra. He had succeeded in pushing Jax back towards Kein. She turned and sent a wave of the Force barreling into Kein. He cried out as he went careening into one of the mountains. Ezra kicked Jax and he fell into the dirt before Ania.

She glared down at him. Not a shred of mercy was in her gaze. "You know, when I joined the Empire I told myself that my lightsabers would never take another life out of cold blood." Ezra cast a look at her. "And they won't." She deactivated her lightsabers.

Jax stood, warily. Ania glanced over his shoulder and grinned. She landed a solid kick into Jax's gut and he went flying back, straight into one of Kein Rei's plasma blades. "Ania," Ezra cried.

"I never said I wouldn't assist." Her blue gaze was cold. Kein pushed Jax's already limp form away.

"Let's finish this, then." Kein drew two new plasma blades out of his boots. "I'll relish making you watch him die."
