《Daughter of Mortis》Broken Minds

Ania led the way through the planet's ever changing terrain. Every now and then, something new would catch her eye. Ezra moved closer to her, a hand on the dagger hilt that swung from his belt. "The seasons have been changing," he pointed out.

Ania nodded. "I've noticed it too."

"Do you know where we're going?"

"Why?" She glanced over her shoulder. "Don't you trust me?"

Ezra raised his eyebrows in surprise. "You know I do, Ania."

She shook her head. "Sorry. This planet is just...a lot."

She could feel the Force writhing beneath her skin with the call of the planet echoing in her mind. Ania shuddered briefly. Ezra put a hand on her shoulder. "What's your plan, exactly?"

Ania sighed. "Reunite the Son and Daughter, survive, get off this rock."

Ezra grinned. "Ah. It's that type of plan."

"Any help would be appreciated." A large tower with a glowing green orb appeared in the distance. "The Well is close," Ania warned. "You'll be able to feel it."

The sunlight began to vanish and the plants shriveled up and died. "There's no dusk or twilight here," Ezra noted.

"Yeah, the planet tends to do its own thing." A cold hand trailed against her cheek.

Ania gasped and stiffened. Ezra looked back. "Are you ok?"

Come to me.

"He's here," Ania whispered.

Give me what's mine.

Her legs began to shake. Her stomach churned and she fell to her knees.

You know what you must do.

"Ania!" Ezra grabbed her and wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly. "Come back."

Slowly, she regained her breath. Ezra was a solid and soothing presence. She screwed her eyes shut. "I think...I should go to the Well alone from here."

"No way. I'm not letting you face this alone."

She pulled away from him. "I might lose control and hurt you. I don't know what will happen."

"That's why I'm not letting you go alone. Ania, you're terrified of this place. There's no way I'm going to let you face those fears by yourself." Ezra's gaze hardened.

She shook her head. "All right. But if something goes wrong, please promise you'll leave me here."

"Ania, I can't," Ezra began.

She held up a hand. "Promise me. If the Son takes control of me and I can't fight him off, you can't let me leave this planet. You'll either leave me here or kill me with the dagger." Ezra shook his head. "Promise me," she ordered.

"You made a promise to me first. You said you will always return to me. I'm trusting you to keep that promise." Ezra stood and pulled her up.

"This isn't a game, Ezra. This is the fate of the universe. I would rather lose my own life than let others lose theirs because of me." She let her voice soften somewhat. "We can't let personal feelings get in the way of what has to be done." She brushed past him and continued towards the Well.

"Well, we might have different ideas of what has to be done," Ezra murmured to himself.

They carried on for a while longer, before coming out beside a large chasm. Ania peered over the edge. Sparks drifted out of the hole. Lava drifted around a few rock formations at the bottom.

"This is where we're going?" Ezra moved beside her, looking down the Well.

Ania nodded. "The Dark Side lives here on the planet. It'll give the Son strength. Watch your back." She took a flying leap into the Well.

Ania plummeted to the floor of the Well. She struck out with the Force, slowing herself before landing. A few moments later, Ezra hit the ground beside her.

"Welcome, my friends." Ezra and Ania whipped around, their lightsabers activated. A tall man with gray skin and blood red tattoos grinned broadly. "I had wondered when you would be joining me," he said. His red eyes glowed ominously. "Shall we begin?"

"How is he here when his body was in the tomb?" Ezra whispered.

"As my sister can manifest in the Force, so can I," the Son replied. "Now," he held out a hand. "Give me what's mine."

"We won't. This is the last time you'll be able to do anything freely again," Ania hissed.

"Ah so you do know what you must do," he drawled. "Good. That will make my job much easier." Thunder clapped outside of the Well and a strange red mist surrounded them. The Son laughed, receding into the mist.

"Ania," Ezra said, backing towards her.

"I don't know what this is," she replied.

"The truth and all of the secrets you've never understood," the Son's voice echoed around them. "That is why you came here, is it not?"

"Don't look at it, Ezra," Ania called warningly. She clenched her eyes closed as wails and cries began to ring around them.

"No, leave us alone!" Tolsa's voice shrieked in agony.

"Somebody, help us!" Sabine was silenced.

"Ania," Ezra shouted.

"Don't look. If you look, you'll be pulled in!" She found his hand and gripped it tightly.

"You cannot unlearn what you know," the Son whispered to them. "You know what the fate of your friends will be. If you let me help you, we can stop what may happen."

"Yeah, by using the Dark Side. I've tried that before. It didn't work for me," Ezra spat.

"The light, the dark. It's all just an illusion of a fragile balance that no longer exists." Ania kept her eyes shut. "Fortunately for you, I only need you temporarily."

Ezra stiffened beside her. Ania's eyes flew open and she whirled, shoving Ezra aside. The Son was gone, along with the red mist. Ania fell to her knees beside Ezra. "Are you all right? Where's the Son?" She looked around the Well.

Ezra sat up and laughed. "Right here, Ania." He stood up, red eyes glowing ominously.

Ania activated her lightsabers. "Get out of him."

"I could, but then where would I go? The boy is a powerful Force Wielder and with him, I just might be able to defeat you and my sister."

"You won't use Ezra for anything. Get out of him, now!"

The Son laughed. "Why don't you come and get him?"

Ania skidded on her heel, but the Son was gone. She clipped her lightsabers to her belt and with a leap, went flying out the Well. She landed on the rocky land and looked towards the tower. She narrowed her eyes and with half a thought, moved herself before the tower.

The Son stood at the base of it. "Good. You're learning to use the planet to your advantage." He unclipped the dagger from his belt. "Unfortunately, you can't use your lightsabers or you'll kill the boy and I have the dagger."

"Well, I guess you'd better give the dagger to me then." She activated her lightsabers.

"I'm afraid you will find that ineffective." The Son waved a hand and her blade retracted into the hilt. She stared at it in shock for a moment. Ania quickly recovered herself and clipped her lightsabers to her belt.

The Son flew at her, activating Ezra's lightsaber and slashing at her with it and the dagger. Ania ducked and rolled, popping back up behind the Son. She sent a wave of the Force barreling into him. The Son went sprawling on the ground. He managed to keep a grip of the dagger.

"Why don't you just accept it? It is your fate to become my sister and his fate to become me!" The Son growled. He lifted a hand, halting Ania in place.

She struggled under his control. "I will never let you have Ezra."

"If I can't have him, then I will have you!" With a screech of fury, the Son brought the dagger down, severing her bond with the Daughter.

Ania gasped as her strength fled. She fell to the ground, unable to breath. Ezra's body landed beside her and another pair of feet stood before them. "Ezra," she gasped.

The Son wrapped a hand around her neck, lifting her into the air. Ania clutched at his hands feebly. Her gaze shot past his face. A pale aura drifted into view and placed a hand against Ezra's face. The Daughter nodded to her, before fading. Ania took one more moment to steel herself, before she quit struggling. The Son smiled and in an instant, she was gone.

Ezra woke with a start. Something was off. There was a dull ache in his chest and his head was screaming. He struggled to his feet, looking around for Ania. She was nowhere to be seen and neither was the dagger. A soft glow surrounded him.

"Are you all right?" The Daughter asked.

"Where is Ania?" He ignored her question.

"With my brother. If you want to free her, we must get the dagger. Ania will know what to do from there."

"How is she alive? I thought that if you two were separated, you'd both die."

The Daughter began walking. Ezra fell in step with her, ignoring the terrain that was speeding past them with every step. "The planet will sustain us but if we are not reunited before she leaves, we will both die and my brother will have complete control over her."

"Wait, you mean your brother has already...possessed Ania?" His heart skipped a beat and panic lodged itself in his chest.

"Yes, he has."

"Then how can we get her back?"

"You. You will be able to convince her to fight him off. When she is in control, she will know what to do."

Ezra rubbed the back of his neck and checked that his lightsaber was still there. "Ania and I have had visions of this place. We always fought beneath the tower."

"Visions can often be wrong. They are merely shadows of what have been and what will be. There is no true way for anything to unfold. Something will always be different," the Daughter explained.

"What makes you think I can bring her back?"

"You've done it before." Ezra raised an eyebrow, unsure. "Your destinies were intertwined long before you even knew the other existed. When you were young, your bond was still there. Now, it's growing even stronger. You must learn to use it. It will be important in the coming years. It is what will save you both now and it is what will save you then."

Ezra shook his head, feeling more confused. "I still don't know what you want me to do."

"You'll have to help each other. My brother will do everything he can to stay in control of her and I cannot interfere on your behalf."

They stopped outside the entrance to a large arena. Ezra glanced through the door. Ania was sitting in the center of the arena. "What is this place?"

"It is where fates and destinies are revealed. Anakin Skywalker saw his fate here. I wonder what you will see."

Ezra eyed her suspiciously and stepped inside of the arena. "Ania," he called hesitantly.

"Tell me, do you really trust me?" It was Ania's voice he heard.

"You know I do, Ania."

"Have you forgiven me?"

"You made mistakes. We all do."

He could feel hatred and malice seeping off her presence. "You didn't answer the question." She stood and drew the Dagger of Mortis. "He's right, you know. If we join him, we can bring an end to everything. The Empire, the Jedi, we can start a new world."

"That's not what you want, Ania. It's what he wants. He wants to destroy and enslave everything. You want to free people." Ezra moved closer to her.

Ania turned towards him. Her skin was gray and cracking and her eyes were an ominous yellow. "You don't know me very well."

"Yes, I do. I know you better than anyone. I know that you blame yourself for Ahsoka's death, just like I blame myself for Kanan's. I know that you have nightmares about Vader and the Emperor."

"No, stop it." Ania gripped her head, two voices echoing from her.

Ezra took another step closer. "Snap out of it. This isn't you. The Son is messing with your mind."

"No, Ezra. This is me! You just refuse to see it!" With a screech she flung herself at him and their blades were locked in a hissing burst of light.
