《Daughter of Mortis》The Beginning

Ania scrubbed at her face angrily. She was sitting inside the Rebel command center with several star maps pulled up around her. She had been trying to align the map from the temple up with their charts, but it was failing to match any. Ania plugged her datapad in again and held it up, projecting the star charts.

The hologram shimmered and faded out before she got it to pair with anything. "Ugh!" Ania slammed the tablet onto the table and shut off the maps. The doorway hissed open and Tolsa stepped inside.

"How's it going?" She asked.

"Not good. I can't get this stupid map to pair with anything!" Ania hissed. "How are we supposed to find this planet when it doesn't show up on any map?"

"How did Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and Anakin find it?"

"Ahsoka said they got a distress signal and when they went to the coordinates, it just appeared." Ania rested her chin in her hands. "There's no one there to send us a distress signal anymore."

"Well, if the Force Wielders died when Ahsoka was there, who's to say the planet has moved?" Tolsa pointed out.

Ania perked up. "You think so?"

Tolsa shrugged. "It might be a good place to start anyway. Can you figure out where it was?"

"You bet I can." Ania pulled up the maps again. "Ahsoka said the signal came from the Chrelythiumn system, out in wild space."

"That's dangerous territory."

"This whole thing is dangerous but we have to."

Tolsa sighed. "Are you sure you don't want me or Sabine to come along too? Even Zeb would be helpful to have along."

Ania shook her head. "If I could, I'd take everyone. This is just something Ezra and I have to do by ourselves."

"All right. Just promise that you'll be all right and that you'll make sure Ezra is too."

Ania grinned. "You don't have to worry about that."

Tolsa rolled her eyes. "Oh please."

Ania grabbed her datapad and stood. "Come on. Ezra and I need to leave as soon as possible."

The two of them stepped out of the command center. Hera stood nearby, counting ships as they landed. She turned as they approached. "Did you have any luck?"

"Tolsa came up with the idea to check where Ahsoka had found Mortis," Ania explained. "I think that's where we'll start."

"Where exactly is that?" Hera crossed her arms.

"The Chrelythiumn system."

Hera shook her head disapprovingly. "That's wild space. Who knows what could be out there."

"We've faced worse. At least we'll both be there," Ania pointed out.

"All right. I take it you're leaving then?" Ania nodded. "Then good luck and be careful."

"We will,"Ania replied as they headed off.

They spotted Ezra with a group of pilots. Ania stepped into the group, interrupting Ezra as he told the young pilots a story. "Hate to interrupt Ezra's story about himself, but we have a mission," she said. The pilots groaned and rolled their eyes.

"He was getting to the good part!" One of the girls complained. She turned a sappy smile to Ezra. Ania bit back a growl.

Ezra draped an arm around Ania. "Well, duty always comes first," he said to the cadet.

The girl giggled. "Where are you going?"

"Confidential," Ezra replied. He began steering Ania towards the Redemption. She rolled her eyes as the girl followed them.

"Can I come? You look like you could use an ace pilot," she smiled.

Ania paused and turned. "I'm sorry but we already have two ace pilots and there is no way I'm letting you fly my ship." She gritted her teeth and quickly boarded the ship. Ezra climbed up behind her. Ania hit the ramp button with a bitter smirk.

She slid into her seat and began the lift off sequence. Ezra glanced at her with a smirk. She ignored him until they cleared the atmosphere. At last, she could take it no longer. "What?" She hissed.

He huffed with amusement. "If I didn't know any better I'd think you were jealous back there."

Ania rolled her eyes, hoping the creeping blush didn't show in her cheeks. "Good thing you know better."

"Well, just so you know, there's no one."

She looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "And what's that supposed to mean?"

"Whatever you want it to mean."

Ania sighed. "You just be that way then."

"So where are we going?" Ezra flipped a switch as the light beneath it blinked on.

"The Chrelythiumn system. It's where Ahsoka said they first found Mortis."

Ezra stiffened. "Isn't that wild space?"

Ania nodded."It's our best option though."

Ezra shrugged. "All right. If that's where you think we should go, that's where we'll go."

Ania activated the hyperdrive. The stars blurred around them and disappeared into streaks of blue. "Oh, hey, I made something for you," Ezra said suddenly.

Ania raised an eyebrow. "Ok?"

Ezra pulled a new crown piece from the satchel on his belt. "It's not the greatest thing in the world but I figured you might like it." He handed it to her.

Ania smiled. "It's great. Thank you." She took off her old band of semi circle shaped teeth and replaced it with the new crown.

Ezra examined her for a minute. "I think it looks good."

"I like it." Ania took the old band and stuffed it in a compartment with her merc gear. "I think it'll take a little while to get there. I'm going to meditate."

"All right. I can keep an eye on things here for a bit." Ezra kicked his feet onto the controls.

Ania swatted his leg. "Off. Were you raised in a barn or something?"

"Close. Try the streets," Ezra said with a wink.

"You poor thing," she laughed. Ania slid out of her seat and headed back to her cabin. She sat down on the metal floor and crossed her legs. Ania closed her eyes and let the Force carry her away.

The visions weren't clear. She could barely see anything. Only vague images of what was to come. An altar, a dagger, tombs, things she had already seen. A terrible feeling stole over her and a headache began to pound inside of her head. Faces leered before her, unfamiliar and full of malcontent. Ania screwed her eyes shut and tried to draw herself out.

"Ania!" Ezra grabbed her shoulders. She gasped for breath, eyes snapping open. "Hey," Ezra whispered, "you're back. It's all right."

Ania lifted a shaking hand to her face. She was surprised to find her cheeks wet with tears. "What happened? My visions weren't clear."

"I heard you start screaming and when I came in you were...I'm not sure honestly. Are you all right?" His hands slid down her arms and took her own palms.

"Yeah, it just scared me. I've never been so scared but for some reason Mortis terrifies me," Ania admitted.

"Your visions about it probably haven't helped. Listen, I promise we'll be all right and you're not going there alone."

Ania stood."I know. That's why I'm afraid."

She brushed past him and made her way back to the cockpit. Ania slid into her seat and stared at the blue streak of hyperspace around them. Ezra silently sat down next to her. The hyperdrive began beeping rapidly. Ania deactivated the hyperdrive, dropping them into wild space.

Ezra leaned forward, confused. "There's nothing here."

"Well, there was never any guarantee that it would be here," Ania pointed out. She tried to keep the disappointment out of her voice.

"I guess we should go back." Ezra started pulling the ship around.

Ania stared into the abyss of space. A subtle tug yanked the back of her mind. "No, wait." She held up a hand. Ezra paused. "Something's coming."

"What?" Ezra was watching now too.

It dropped into the open space before them, like a ship dropping out of hyperspace. The planet appeared as a black diamond. Ania's heartbeat quickened. "That."

Ezra's eyes widened and he glanced at her. "Is that it?"

"Send a transmission to Lothal. We don't know what will happen once we enter," Ania ordered.

Ezra activated their transmission and quickly broadcasted a message to Hera. He broke off suddenly as the planet split in half. A blinding white light spilled out of it. Ania shielded her eyes from the glow. Ezra ended the transmission before shielding his own eyes.

The gravitational pull locked onto the ship and began drawing them in. Ania squinted against the light until it faded to black. The planet roared around them, gradually giving way to a deafening silence.

Ania groaned and blinked her eyes open. The ship had landed. She glanced at Ezra. He was unconscious still. Ania smacked his arm. "Hey, wake up!"

Ezra's eyes snapped open and he sat up, rubbing his head. "What happened?"

"We're here," she said, not answering his question.

Ezra stood and stretched. "Well, let's go then."

Ania checked her weapons and munitions, unsure of what they'd face. She waited a few minutes before following Ezra off the ship. Ezra held monoculars up briefly once he was off the ship. Ania looked around at the devastated landscape.

Massive rocks lay crushed on the ground. Trees were broken and charred. The whole planet was dark, as thought plunged into eternal night. A vision flashed through her mind of a beautiful planet. One where the rocks floated in the air and the ground was green.

You have come!

Welcome!

She is home!

Ania shook her head, grabbing her montrals. Ezra put a hand on her shoulder. "Hey, are you ok?"

"Yeah, I just heard something."

"Where do you think we should go?"

"If we're going to unite the two, we need to find the Son," Ania guessed. "And I would imagine the dagger and altar have some importance as well."

"Let's go then."

As if in a trance, Ania began to walk. "Follow me. I'm not sure how, but I think I know where to go."

Ezra shrugged and followed her. He glanced back at the ship, unsure. "Are you sure the ship will be all right?"

"It's not like there's anything here to take it," Ania pointed out.

"I guess so."

A soft breeze began to blow around them. Ania could sense the change in the air before it happened. Electricity crackled through the air, energizing her. She stopped, instantly suspicious. Ezra continued past her.

"Something's about to happen," she murmured.

"What?" Ezra stopped and looked back at her.

"Get down!" Ania tackled him and forced him aside as a bolt of lightning struck down. The ground became electrified where they had stood moments before.

"What was that!" Ezra exclaimed.

"We need shelter!" Ania grabbed his hand and began to run.

"I saw a cave close by," Ezra called.

Thunder clapped overhead and rain began falling in blinding sheets. Lightning struck over and over, illuminating the darkness briefly. The cave was closer to them now. Lightning struck again, almost searing through Ania. She cried out and snatched an electrified tree branch.

The intervals between lightning became more frequent. Ezra let go of her hand and dodged one bolt, before grabbing her again. The cave was right in front of them. They put on a final burst of speed and threw themselves inside. Lightning struck just beyond the cave.

Ania grabbed several loose sticks and grass and threw the electrified branch onto the pile. It burst into flames immediately. She slumped down and hissed, holding her hand to her chest. Ezra ran over to her and took her hand gently.

"That was stupid," he growled. Her hand was covered in burns and several electrified lines had been seared into it.

Ania blinked back tears of pain. One slid and she hissed as it hit her hand. The pain began to reduce slightly. Ania narrowed her eyes.

"What is that?" Ezra's eyes widened.

The burns began to heal themselves and the lacerations disappeared. "The planet," Ania realized. "I think it's strengthening the Daughter. She's healing me."

Ezra rubbed his forehead. "This place is creeping me out already. I'm going to sleep. We can keep going when it's not raining lightning."

Ania nodded. She moved closer to the fire and lay down, resting her head in the crook of her arms. Her eyes closed wearily. Ania heard Ezra moving around before sleep overcame her and she was no longer aware of anything.
