《Daughter of Mortis》Searching for the Lost

Ania placed her hand on the stone. It felt warm and thrummed with Force energy. She closed her eyes, focusing on the temple. How do we enter?
"You have brought a Jedi."
Yes. We both seek answers and knowledge.
"Two made into one may enter here or one who relies on themself."
Who will open the temple?
"Who is seeking?"
Ania opened her eyes. "You know, any Jedi, be they fallen, gray, or otherwise, just love their riddles."
Ezra crossed his arms and smirked. "So did you find us a way in or not?"
"The temple said that two made into one can open the temple or one who relies on themself."
Ezra furrowed his brow. "Well, neither of us really rely on ourselves anymore and what does the two made into one mean? Would our connection help us there?"
Ania shrugged. "I know just as much as you."
"It's worth a try." Ezra moved into the center of one of the markings on the ground. Ania stepped beside him.
Together, they reached a hand toward the temple. Ania struck out as Ezra did, pulling the Force around her. The temple didn't move. They tried again. The ground rumbled a bit, but nothing more. Ania released her hold on the temple and braced herself on her knees.
"Any more ideas?" She asked. A large padded foot appeared beside her own. Ania glanced up. The white loth wolf blinked at her. Ania raised an eyebrow. "Actually, I have an idea of my own."
She placed a hand on the loth wolf's forehead. The connection strengthened. Can you hear me? Ania called to the wolf through their minds.
"Yes."
Do you know how we can enter the temple?
"With me."
Why you? Why not Ezra?
"He is not your guide, is he?"
My guide?
"Another secret you may ask the temple. I will help you enter."
The loth wolf began to project a series of instructions into Ania's mind. She raised a hand towards the temple, while maintaining contact with the wolf. The temple began to rumble and shake as it twisted out of the earth. A doorway appeared and Ania stopped. She opened her eyes and broke away from the wolf.
"Do I want to know what happened?" Ezra asked.
"She said she's my guide? She helped me open the temple."
"As long as she won't eat us or anything."
Dust drifted from the doorway of the temple. Ania looked at it skeptically before ducking inside. Ezra followed her. The loth wolf sat down outside, tilting her head.
Dust layered everything inside the temple, even the bones left from centuries before. Ania shuddered at the sight of them. "I wonder what happened to them."
She crouched beside one of the skeletons and traced a hand down the bones. The Force moved around them angrily. A scene unfolded in her mind and disappeared again, like a dream.
"A Sith Lord found this temple and killed them," Ania said. "The temple collapsed on top of him in revenge." She looked around. A pile of misplaced debris lay in one corner. "There." She pointed at the pile.
Ezra shuddered. "Let's stop playing with bones and go get whatever we came for."

Ania stood, brushing herself off, and followed Ezra deeper into the temple. Ahead, screams bounced off the walls of the temple. Ania drew in a steadying breath. "Let's not get separated. This temple is probably like the other. I'm willing to bet it'll plague us with visions too."
"We both faced our fears, though," Ezra pointed out.
"Who's to say we haven't developed some new ones?" Ania cast a glance over her shoulder.
They walked on in silence for a few minutes. Strange sounds rolled through the temple, sending dust billowing everywhere. The temple began to quake a little. Ania wavered on her feet and braced an arm against the wall.
Ezra went flying past her, suddenly, his face frozen in horror. "Hey!" Ania shouted. "What did I say about splitting up?" She quickly chased after him.
Ezra ducked down one of the other tunnels. Ania slid in after him. Ahead, the darkness illuminated in a flash of red. Ania tried to slow down but she crashed onto the floor anyway. She rolled and jumped to her feet. "Ezra!" She called out.
He was no where in sight. The red tinge remained. Ania gripped her lightsabers tightest, taking tentative steps. "Ezra," she called again.
A lightsaber ignited behind her. Ania whirled around. The Twelfth Sister held her crimson blade at Ezra's throat. "Well, well, well. Look at the prize I've stumbled upon!" The Sister mocked. "A rebel's head and the traitor's bones." Even with her mask on, Ania could sense the Sister's wicked smile.
"No! That's impossible. You're dead. Ezra killed you on Concordia!" Ania exclaimed.
"Did he?" The Sister moved her blade closer to his neck. Ania stiffened. Ezra's eyes were wide. His fingers flexed, but other than that, he made no movements. "He merely injured me. Kein Rei carried my corpse on his ship back to Coruscant. I can assure you, I am very much alive."
Ania rubbed her forehead. "No, no!" She whispered. "You're dead. This has to be an illusion."
"It's time to stop living in visions and dreams, Ania! Come with me to the Emperor or I'll kill him and the rest of your Rebel friends!" The Sister spat.
"No, Ezra killed you and I moved Kein onto his ship. You're dead!" Ania growled. She ignited a lightsaber. "This is a trick."
"Clever, but not quite right." The Sister drawled. Her crimson blade cut through Ezra's neck. Ania jolted in shock, but screwed her eyes shut, grounding herself in the Force.
"It's a trick. It's a trick. It's a trick," she whispered.
The Sister grabbed her face viciously. "Oh please. Are you so desperate to save his life that you would lie to yourself about his death?"
Ania stared into the Sister's mask. She narrowed her eyes and wrapped her grip around the mask. It shattered almost instantly. The Sister's Mirialan face stared back at her.
"You are not real," Ania said firmly. "I am no longer afraid of you."
The Sister and Ezra's body disappeared. Ania collapsed to her knees, gasping in relief. She calmed herself for a few minutes, before moving onward. "Ezra!" She called again.
"Do not look for him."
Ania turned to the voice. She raised an eyebrow skeptically. The Daughter's lithe figure shimmered beside her. "Why are you here?"

"A temple is one of the few places where I may take a physical form."
"I don't want to speak with you. You've brought me nothing but misery."
"It's not my fault. When Vader corrupted you with the Dark Side, he corrupted me as well. Now I am as unbalanced as you."
"Why did the wolf bring us to the temple? What are we supposed to find?"
"Something that has been lost for a long time."
"Wow." Ania rolled her eyes. "That's super helpful."
"Aren't you going to ask about the wolf?" The Daughter asked, ignoring her.
"She said she was my guide. What does that mean?"
"Many Force Wielders can speak with or see a type of animal. These animals are called guides. They help guide Jedi through the mysteries of the Force and in foreign places. This loth wolf is your guide. Morai was Ahsoka's guide."
"Hm." Ania ducked down another tunnel. "Why don't all Jedi have them?"
"Not all Jedi need them."
"And I do?"
The Daughter stopped abruptly. "It is an honor to have an animal choose you."
"I never said it wasn't. Look, if you're not going to help me find whatever we're supposed to find, then just leave me alone. I need to find Ezra and you're not helping," Ania spat.
She turned around, expecting anger, but the Daughter was gone. The cavern was quiet and abnormally dark. She hadn't noticed the soft light the Daughter had been casting until it was gone. Ania shook her head and muttered incoherently.
She continued through the cavern until she came to another fork. Ania cast her senses down the paths, searching for any sign of Ezra. She couldn't feel his presence anywhere. Ania stepped down one of the paths and kept walking.
"Ezra," she called again. She switched on her comm, but only static came through. She was too far underground for a signal. Ania felt a subtle tug at the corner of her mind. She narrowed her eyes but followed it.
Voices began to fade in and out around her. Ania ignored them and continued to follow the pull. A doorway took shape ahead. She quickened her pace as the voices grew louder. The voices grew to a roar, bombarding her sensitive montrals with endless screams. Ania ran and flung herself through the doorway.
Instantly, it was silent. Ania lay still for a few minutes until a shadow fell over her. "There you are!" Ezra exclaimed. "I've been looking for you all over this place." He pulled her to her feet.
"Where did you go?" Ania asked.
"Me? You ran off first. I chased you and then saw a vision of Grand Admiral Thrawn. When it was past, you were gone. I felt the Force pull me here," Ezra explained.
"I saw you run off and be killed by the Twelfth Sister before I was led here."
She looked around the room finally. Murals covered every inch of the walls and the ceiling. The floor had several meditation rings carved into it. Ania walked to one of the murals and gently traced her hand across the depiction.
"Who are they?" Ezra moved beside her.
"The Force Wielder's of Mortis," Ania whispered. Ezra glanced at her.
"The Daughter? Which one is she?" He asked.
Ania pointed to the depiction of the Daughter. "That's her. I've spoken to her a time or two, but it wasn't ever very pleasant."
The tattooed man's red eyes seemed to stare into her. Ania moved over to his mural hesitantly. She reached a hand towards him. The mural began to glow red and Ania jerked her hand back. She shook her head and headed to the third mural. An ancient man was depicted. "The Father," Ania realized.
"Come look at this," Ezra called.
Ania ran over to him. In between the Son and Daughter's murals, another smaller scene had been created. The citadel with a Togruta girl before it. Beside her stood the Daughter and on her other side, the Son. Ezra glanced at her. "Do you think it's Ahsoka?"
Ania nodded. "Who else could it be?" She stood and examined another mural. There were no people in it. Only stars and maps. "What do you think this is?" She traced a finger over the familiar courses until she found Lothal.
"Looks like a map of the systems," Ezra said, noting where her finger fell. "There's a planet missing." He pointed to a space where someone had chiseled out several planets.
"When I asked the Daughter what we were supposed to find, she said it was something that was lost. If those planets are lost, maybe we're supposed to find them," Ania surmised. She stroked her chin thoughtfully.
"Ania, if these are all of Mortis, and you're still having visions about it, maybe there's a reason why," Ezra pointed out.
"What do you mean?"
"What if Mortis sensed the Daughter in you and is calling to you? Maybe that's why the wolf led us here."
"You think we need to find Mortis?" She raised an eyebrow skeptically.
"Everyone keeps telling us the Force is out of balance. You said that the Son, Father, and Daughter kept the balance. Maybe we need to go to Mortis. There could be a way to restore it," Ezra explained.
Ania nodded slowly. "I think you might be right. We both felt pulled here for some reason. The Daughter said to find something that was lost." She sighed. "I just have a really bad feeling about this." She turned to look at the Son's mural again. His red eyes glowed almost with anticipation.
"This could help you learn to control your powers more, or maybe even find a way to release the Daughter so she won't be a part of you."
"I don't know."
"You know I'll go with whatever you decide."
Ania sighed. "That's what I'm afraid of." She sat down, resting her chin in her hands. "But you could be right. There might be something on Mortis we need." She scrubbed at her face. "All right. Let's try to find it."
Ezra grinned and headed out of the room. Ania stood up and glanced back at the Son. "I really hope this is the right thing to do," she whispered.
