《Daughter of Mortis》Narrow Escape

Ania groaned and gripped her shoulder. The blast had seared through her arm. Luckily when she spun, her lekku had flown out of the way and wasn't hit. Any closer to heart and she would have been dead. Ania struggled to sit up.

Jax ran closer and kicked her lightsabers away, leveling his blaster at her head. "I knew you were a traitor! What was that creature? Something that works for the Empire no doubt. I can't believe General Syndulla trusted you over me!"

Ania gripped her shoulder tighter. "That creature was someone ancient and wise. He has no part in this war." The ground rumbled ever so slightly.

"Whatever you're doing," Jax looked at the ground, "stop now or I'll shoot! And this time, I won't miss!"

"Jax, stand down!" Someone shouted.

Ania looked over the ridge. Sabine and Ezra slid down the slope and ran to her. Ezra glanced at her shoulder and whirled on Jax. "What do you think you're doing? Attacking your commanding officer?"

"But she was talking to a creature! She's a spy and a traitor!" Jax protested.

Sabine helped Ania stand. "I am not a traitor!" Ania growled.

"Yes, you are. You're nothing but scum!" Jax moved closer, pointing his blaster at her again. Ezra pushed him away, roughly. Ania shrugged Sabine off and moved towards Ezra. "She's brainwashed you with her powers or something! Why am I the only one who can see this? She'll be the undoing of the Rebellion!" Jax backed away and fired his blaster.

Ania whipped her uninjured arm up, stopping the blast in its place. She flicked her finger and the blast redirected into a rock. Jax ran towards her, preparing to slam his blaster down. She sidestepped and jammed her elbow into his side.

With a fist, she crushed the blaster into a scrap of metal. She effortlessly lifted Jax into the air. He looked around anxiously and stared at Ania's outstretched hand. "Put me down!" He ordered.

"You are lucky that it was me in control today," Ania hissed. "If you want to see my bad side," the second voice began to appear, "just try that again!" She dropped him. Ezra slapped a pair of cuffs onto Jax's wrist and led him to a speeder. Sabine and Ania took off after them.

After arriving back at the camp, Ania went to the med bay. The droid there applied a bacta patch to the wound and wrapped it. When it was satisfied, Ania left for the control center, where Ezra had taken Jax. Jax was seated on a chair, surrounded by Hera, Kanan, and Commander Sato.

Ania entered the building and stood between Ezra and Sabine. "Ezra said Jax shot you and claims you are a traitor," Commander Sato said, more of a question than a statement.

"Yes." She lifted her lekku, showing the bandaged area. "I was training and I met someone, a Force entity." Kanan's masked face turned towards her. "Jax saw me speak to the creature and he thought it was Imperial."

"So his first response was to shoot his commander?" Sato turned to Jax.

"That creature was enormous and not natural! There's no way it wasn't Imperial!" Jax shouted.

"I know what creature Ania is talking about. He is not an enemy," Kanan said.

"Very well. Jax, you will be kept here where we can keep an eye on you until we have decided what to do with you." Sato turned to Ania. "R-Squadron has a mission. Are you up for it?"

"Always, Commander."

"Commander Sato, Tolsa Lee is flying a relief mission today," Hera pointed out. "Their squad is down one fighter."

"I would go, but Zeb and I are with Tolsa," Sabine added.

"Give Jax a chance to make up for himself," Ania urged. "Let him fly this mission and prove himself. Maybe he'll do better this time."

"Are you sure?" Commander Sato raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, sir."

"Very well then. You had better do your best," the commander said to Jax.

"I'm flying with them," Ezra butted in.

Ania nodded at him before asking, "What's the mission?"

"The Empire is sending a Destroyer and TIE's to block the trade route near Garel. You have to stop them," Hera explained.

"I'll take the Ravager, then. We'll need it's firepower for that Destroyer." She nodded to them and headed towards her ship. Ezra ran alongside her. "You can take my A-Wing."

He nodded. "You know this is a terrible idea, right?"

"I have a suspicion. Hopefully this mission will disprove it, but if it doesn't, you might have to step in." Ania explained.

Ezra nodded and broke away towards the R-Squadron A-wings. Ania climbed into the Ravager and began to power up. Razzi, Cryl, and Jax jumped into their ships. The deck officer switched his hand lights to green and they began to take off. Just beyond the atmosphere, Ania activated her comms.

"All right, everyone. Let's make the jump." She pulled the lever and the stars blurred before her.

In no time at all, they emerged a distance away from the Star Destroyer. "All wing's call in," Ania ordered.

"R-2, standing by," Ezra called from inside her A-wing. Usually, Tolsa was flying R-2.

"R-3, standing by." That was Razzi.

"R-4, standing by," Cryl called in.

No reply came from R-5. Ania glanced out the window. Jax was there all right, but refusing to follow orders as always. "Razzi, Cryl, Ezra, you three get those TIE's off our tails. Jax, you're with me. We're going for the shield generators so the Ravager's blast can get through."

Three ships broke away as dozens of TIE Fighters began to emerge. They were heavily outnumbered, but their skill wasn't outmatched. Ania urged the Ravager forward. Jax followed her.

The gun towers erupted into action as Ania and Jax drew close to the massive Destroyer. Ania rotated the Ravager's body around and out of range of the towers. She saw a few TIE's explode in the distance. Ania flew directly into the center of the Destroyer and soared towards the large T structure that led to the bridge. Jax was on her tail.

"Get ready to redirect," Ania called into her comm. The structure drew closer and closer. "Now," she hissed to herself. She banked up, and soared over the ship, even catching sight of a few officers in the bridge windows. She spun the Ravager back and with a few blasts from her guns, one of the shield generators erupted into fire.

On the opposite side, the other generator exploded from Jax's guns. "Nice work!" Ania called. "Get clear of the Destroyer and help the others." She didn't wait to see if he listened.

Ania swung back around the Destroyer and set up the intense weaponry system. She activated the weapon and saw four balls of light form at the ends of her ship. They shot plasma beams into one large beam, which tore through the hull of the Destroyer. Ania deactivated the weapon as she neared the edge of the Destroyer.

The lights of the massive ship began to short circuit and wink out. The ship began to tilt and tear itself apart, falling to the surface of Garel. The remaining TIE fighters evacuated the area, seeing their loss. "Mission accomplished, R-Squadron. It's time to head back to base," Ania said.

"Not so fast, Commander." The audio came through a one wave frequency. Only she could hear it.

The blast came from behind and tore through one of the Ravager's extended wings. Two more blasts sent the bottom portion of the ship flying into space. Multiple alarms began to blare as Ania desperately tried to reroute the failing power. Another blast knocked out her main stabilizers. Two ships flew in front of her.

Ania gasped. She knew those ships. They belonged to the Inquisitor and the bounty hunter. The ship's magnetic stabilizers failed and she began to drift aimlessly in space. The gravitational pull of Garel began to drag her ship down.

"Ania, what's going on?" Ezra's voice echoed through the comm.

"There's an Inquisitor here and Kein Rei. My ship is damaged and I'm caught in the planet's gravitational field," Ania reported, still trying to boost power.

"Jax's ship just made the jump to hyperspace," Razzi called out.

Flames began to lick at the edge of the windows as she entered the atmosphere. Pressure began to build up and a terrible ringing echoed through her head. Something crackled through her comm, but she couldn't make sense of it. She tried to pull the ship up, but she had no power. She could make out land beneath her. It looked like she would land in one of the deserts. Ania quickly checked that her blasters and comm were in their places. She grabbed her lightsabers, waiting.

The ship would crash soon. The ground drew closer and closer. Ania lashed out with her lightsabers, smashing through the glass. She jumped out, keeping a grip on her lightsabers. The ship collided in a burst of fire. The force of the explosion shot her even further away from the ship. She hit the sand hard, losing her shoto somewhere.

The ringing sound died a little. Ania cracked her eyes open, sitting up. Her head throbbed with pain and sand had already fallen into her boots. Two ships sat nearby. The Sister and Kein Rei stepped in front of Ania. She struggled to her feet, but neither lightsaber was in sight.

Ania drew both of her blasters, aiming at the two Imperials. "Well, well, well. It seems you've wandered a little too far from home," the Sister cooed.

"We were never properly introduce," Ania hissed through gritted teeth. She could feel dozens of cuts on her body already beginning to burn.

"I am the Twelfth Sister," the Inquisitor replied. She drew her lightsaber, activating its crimson blades. Kein Rei drew his plasma blades and the two began to circle Ania. She didn't waste any time. Ania fired several blasts at Kein Rei. He had to roll to dodge a few of them.

The Twelfth Sister ran towards Ania, bringing her lightsaber down. Ania ducked and rolled between her legs. Ania sent a series of sharp jabs into several sensitive nerve areas and used the Force to pull the Sister's lightsaber out of her grip. The Sister collapsed, temporarily paralyzed by a few of Ania's hits. Ania took the red blades and quickly deflected Kein's attacks.

A ship soared overhead and landed close by. Ezra drew his lightsaber and came running towards them. The Sister had recovered herself and was quick to repay Ania. She swept the Togruta's legs and sent several stout punches into Ania's face and throat. Ania gagged and flipped over. She grabbed a handful of sand and threw it into the tiny grooves in the Sister's mask. The Sister grabbed her lightsaber and whirled off of Ania.

Ania jumped to her feet in time to dodge the attack. She sidestepped, rolled, leaped, and more, avoiding each attack. The blazing sun stared down at them. Ania looked past the Sister. Kein planted a solid kick into Ezra's gut. Ezra doubled over and Kein hooked his face into an armored knee. Ezra fell, disoriented. Kein drew a plasma blade and raised it above Ezra's heart.

"No!" Ania screamed. She threw her hands forward and the Force barreled into Kein Rei. The Nautolan flew backwards, landing hard on the ground.

Beskar steel sliced into her cheek. Ania felt warm blood drip from the wound. It wasn't the only one. The Sister threw her blade against the sand, kicking it up into Ania's eyes. Ania attempted to shield her face with an arm. Ezra struggled to his feet behind the Sister. A heavy kick sent Ania flying. She gasped as she landed, trying to draw in a breath.

"Lord Vader will pay me handsomely for your head," the Twelfth Sister hissed.

Ania closed her eyes, reaching out. She heard a familiar call echoing in the distance. She grabbed onto it, pulling it towards her. She heard the Sister's blade rise. As it fell, two solid objects landed in her hands. Ania activated her lightsabers, blocking the Sister's attack. Take off guard, the Inquistor staggered backwards. Ania used the Force to send her flying into a ship.

Ania ran to Ezra and grabbed his lightsaber. "Tell me how it's green later," she hissed. "We've got to go now!"

Ezra took his lightsaber and nodded. The two of them limped towards Ezra's A-Wing. Two blast bolts rang out. Ania swiftly halted and redirected them. They reached the ship and jumped inside. Ezra powered up the engines while Ania slid behind his seat, trying to stay out of the way. As they lifted off, she dropped her head against the metal.

"You ok?" Ezra glanced back.

"Not really." Ania lifted a hand to her head. "But we're alive. That's what's important."

"How did they know where we were?"

"I don't know. That escape was narrow. Too close for my liking."

Ezra silently nodded his agreement and made the jump to lightspeed.
