《Daughter of Mortis》Mysteries of the Senate

The shuttle touched down and opened to a glaring city, one Ania had hoped never to see again. Bail Organa led the three girls off the ship. A Togruta was waiting for them on the platform. "Senator Organa, I'm glad to see you back safely," the woman said.
"Senator Li," Bail dipped his head in greeting. "May I introduce Ania Bonteri, Tolsa Lee, and Sabine Wren."
Ania took a closer look at the senator of Shili. She was tall with gray skin and white facial markings. Her long montrals were adorned with an elaborate headdress. Senator Li's black eyes glittered as she examined them. Her gaze rested on Ania. "You do not look like your father," she said.
"My mother tells me I get my personality from him. Mainly the annoying side."
Aura smiled faintly. "I hope you will live up to his legacy. Come. We should prepare the three of you. There is much to do today." She motioned for them to follow.
A short shuttle ride saw them to the Galactic Senate building. Numerous senators and guards bustled through the ornate hallways. Ania had hidden her lightsabers in her bag and was trying to keep her head down. Senator Li led them through less occupied halls, but it was impossible to avoid people entirely. Ania breathed a sigh of relief when they reached the senator's office.
The large room was decorated with red, blue, and gold. Five rooms branched off from the main lounging area. One room was a bathroom, two were bedrooms, the other was a dining area, and the last was Senator Li's private office. Senator Li motioned the three girls into one of the rooms. Three outfits lay on the bed.
She moved to the midnight blue gown, similar to her own, and held it out to Ania. "It is tradition for my wards to wear my colors," she explained. Ania took the dress. "There is a headpiece to go with it, but it will come later." Aura Li snatched up a gold dress and passed it to Tolsa. "You will act as our handmaiden." A suit of armor was next. It was handed to Sabine. "The helmet was made to mimic Togruta montrals. No one will doubt it's authenticity."
Senator Li passed her stern gaze over them again. "Tolsa, handmaidens speak only to their mistresses or when spoken to. I hope you can remember this? Sabine, our guards are silent at all times. You must not speak at all unless we are alone." Tolsa and Sabine nodded their understanding. Senator Li turned to Ania. "We will have to do something about your markings. They make you too recognizable. You will be using the name Eira Li while you are here. She is my niece and luckily for you, you share the same traits. We can have someone paint over your markings until they look like Eira's."
Ania nodded. "So what do we do until tomorrow?"
"I will show you around the Senate building. This afternoon, it will be nearly deserted due to another conference being held at the Emperor's palace. All the senators must go, but our wards will remain behind. You will use that time to find what you need," Senator Li said. "I'll leave you to it. Please be ready in 15 minutes." She stepped out of the room.

The girls quickly changed into their new outfits. Tolsa was given a type of paint to use on Ania. After finding a hologram of Eira, it took Tolsa only a few minutes to create Eira's markings on Ania. When they had finished, Aura Li took a golden headpiece and arranged it on Ania. She gave them a scrutinizing look and motioned Bail over.
"What do you think?"
"They'll fit right in," Bail grinned. "I must go prepare for the conference tonight. I will see you all at the vote tomorrow." Bail bowed and left swiftly.
Senator Li motioned her personal guards over and together, the large party left the office. They took the large bustling hallways this time. Ania received a few curious stares, but none seemed to suspect them. They passed by the large Senatorial Chamber, where all the voting occurred. Senator Li showed them the Shili seat before they continued. Next was the Office of the Chancellor, or what would have been during the Age of the Republic.
A few hours later, they returned to Senator Li's chamber. "I must go meet Senator Organa for the conference now. Be vigilant and don't do anything that could jeopardize your mission," Aura cautioned, before leaving.
"What now?" Tolsa asked once the senator had left.
"We get what we came for. We need to find all the Imperial records about Lothal and their plans for it," Sabine replied.
"And tomorrow we have to delay that vote." Ania stroked her chin thoughtfully. "I think we need to split up. We have to find the intel as soon as possible."
"It's risky. What if one of us gets caught?" Sabine pointed out.
"It's a risk we have to take. Meet back here in three hours with whatever you find," Ania ordered. "Good luck." She stepped into their room and grabbed her lightsaber. Ania quickly strapped it to her leg beneath her dress. Hopefully she would be able to reach it if needed. Tolsa and Sabine were already gone by the time she made her way into the halls.
Some of the other wards nodded to her as they passed by. Ania tried her best to look as though she belonged when passing by the Red Guards. She cut through several side passages until she reached one of the unoccupied hallways.
A strange whispering filled her head as she passed through the hall. Ania looked around suspiciously, but there was no one to be seen. As she continued, the whispers grew louder and louder. They grew to a roar in front of one chamber. Ania shook her head and paused. She glanced around, then waved a hand before the door. It slid open and revealed a large room. A few box seats were mounted on the wall and several hover stands rested in their place. Ania touched a hand to the large podium and spied the Republic Insignia, faded, but still visible on the wall. She reached a hand to the symbol.
Accusing voices filled the room. Cries of outrage and distress echoed off the walls. A Togruta girl bowed her head, struggling against her emotions. Another woman pointed accusingly at someone. "Why would Ahsoka kill Letta with a method that would so obviously tie the murder to her? A Jedi may be responsible for the murder, but that Jedi is not Ahsoka Tano. Members of the court, you are prosecuting the wrong Jedi."

Ania opened her eyes. The emotions in the vision had been strong. She looked around the room again. "This was where she was put on trial," Ania realized. "A military court." Ania left the chamber and continued to search.
Ania paused near another office. The old chancellor's office was blocked by a ray shield. She placed her hand on the small control panel next to the door. It opened instantly and Ania slipped inside. She crossed through the dusty room, looking around curiously. She could almost see the numerous people who had visited the chamber. The once red carpet was stained brown with dirt and who knew what else.
The large desk still sat before a broken window. Outside, a heavy rain had begun to fall. Some rain splashed through the broken window. Ania sat down at the desk and began to search through the drawers. She spied an old power cell and quickly activated it. She leaned across the desk and drew a power cell out of the transmitter in the center of the desk, replacing it with the new one.
A keyboard blinked to life beneath her fingers. Almost without thought, Ania began to type words into the board. Lothal. Imperial factory. TIE production. Blockade. File after file popped up through a hologram. Ania grabbed her comm link and attached it to the transmitter. A light blinked on. The comm was working. She downloaded several promising files and sent them through the comm. Footsteps thumped outside of the office.
Ania whipped her head up and grabbed her comm and the power cell. The entire desk powered down. The footsteps stopped outside of the door. Ania ducked beneath the desk and willed her heart to be silent. The footsteps came no closer. She heard the hiss of a generator before the footsteps receded. When she was certain the person was gone, Ania raised her head above the desk. "Great! They turned the ray shield back on!" She tossed the power cell back into the desk and slid her comm inside one of her gloves.
Thunder clapped outside, startling her. Ania ran to the door and ran a hand over it. The control panel was broken on her side. Familiar scars laced across it, proof of a lightsaber's work. Ania growled and turned to the window. The lights faded from sight before she could see where the ground began. Ania screwed her eyes shut for a moment.
Steeling herself, she crawled out of the window and gripped the thin ledge above it. Using the Force, she pushed herself up onto a ledge. Ania quickly pulled up a map of the building and breathed a sigh of relief. Senator Li's office was close. All she had to focus on was not falling. Ania began to work her way towards the balcony of Senator Li's office. She would have to go down sooner or later, but she would rather be above the balcony before then. Rain fell harder, washing the paint off her face. Her hands slipped through the collecting rain water in the grooves she was gripping.
She reached the edge of the ledge. Another one was a few yards away, but she would have to jump. Ania screwed her eyes shut and leaped. She landed awkwardly on the ledge and went rolling. Ania cried out as she tumbled off the ledge. Her hand shot out, gripping the edge tightly. She swung her other hand up before looking down. Senator Li's balcony was below her. If she slid down the dome, she could make it. "I have got to be insane," Ania muttered to herself. She hesitated, then let go, flinging herself onto the side of the dome.
The metal building was slick with rain and she went speeding down the side. "This will fry my lightsaber!" She grunted as she slid along. The balcony was coming up fast. She reached the balcony quicker than anticipated and landed with a thud on the hard cement. Ania coughed, gasping for breath and rolled over.
Someone opened the doorway and ran out. "Ania? What are you doing!" Tolsa grabbed her arm and pulled her inside.
"I was coming back here," Ania replied. She took the towel Sabine offered. "I found some files and got them sent to Hera, but someone shut me into the old chancellor's office so I had to improvise."
"You couldn't have improvised another way?" Tolsa raised an eyebrow.
"Probably, but this was the most dramatic way."
"I found a few things too. They're on my comm but I haven't been able to get a signal," Sabine said.
"Have you tried hooking it to a datapad? Maybe the files are too big for a comm." Ania finished drying herself with the towel and quickly took out her comma and lightsaber. She turned the lightsaber upside down and shook it. "Oh thank goodness. I thought it would be fried."
"I'll try that. Senator Li sent a transmission. Apparently the session is beginning early tomorrow. Something about a trial?" Sabine waved it off as she went to send the files.
"I found an old military court room," Ania said. "It still had the Republic Insignia. I saw a vision of something that had happened there too. Ahsoka was put on trial there."
"I had a vision too!" Tolsa exclaimed. "I was passing by a different office. The Naboo senator's I think. I saw a woman with brown hair and brown eyes and two Jedi."
"Maybe the past is revealing itself. Ahsoka said that sometimes, Jedi can see what has happened in the past through sensing an echo of the Force. Maybe that's what happened."
"Maybe. You should go change. That dress will have to be washed before tomorrow," Tolsa pointed out. Ania nodded and left for their room, still pondering what she had seen.
