《Contrasting Similarities》14. Muffin

"Pathetic again. Running to get help for that dying bitch?" He scoffed. It took everything in me to not claw his eyes out.

I stayed silent so he rolled his eyes, muttered, "Boring." and left, walking towards his room maybe.

I ran to the room we were staying in again and grabbed the suitcases.

Rolling them to the stairs while keeping a close eye around, I picked them up, with a little difficulty because they were heavy and I was exhausted after picking Rose up.

'Pathetic.'

I trudged down the stairs and was out the door within ten seconds.

These people are dumb or maybe I was just sneaky.

I climbed in the car, pulling the suitcases with me and putting them on the car seat.

The driver got in his seat quickly and started driving to the huge metal gates. As he punched in the password, I looked at the various guards in the lawn, who were all roaming around. None paying attention to our car.

Guess password was all we needed and Father didn't bother to change it after Lucian and others moved out. Or maybe he did and Lucian still found out what it was.

"How did you arrive so fast?" I asked, looking at the driver.

"The Capo has people everywhere, Miss Mazzanti," He said, nodding his head once in a bowing manner.

He stopped when we were a fair distance away from the mansion and got out. I watched his every move as he came to my side of the car.

He opened my door and took the suitcases, proceeding to put them in the back.

I shifted closer to Rose when he went to sit in his seat again and started driving.

My phone ringing distracted me from worrying too much about the situation.

Asher.

I picked it up and put it to my ear, not saying anything yet.

"Got in the car?" Asher asked, anxiously.

"Yes," I said. "What about Rose?"

"How did she faint?" Another voice asked in the background.

"I don't know. She had fever and I went to get water for the medicine but when I came back..." I stopped for a moment. "When I came back, she was unconscious."

"I know there's something more to that and we're going to have a long talk about it," Lucian added.

Why does Asher disappear after giving the phone to him mid-conversation?

"Stop it, Lucian!" Asher said, snatching the phone back. "What medicine did she take?"

"She didn't. She fell unconscious before I could give her the glass of water," I said, quickly.

"Okay. Give the phone to the driver," He said and I did just that. The driver took the phone, putting it to his ear with one hand while handling the steering wheel with his other.

Rose was still burning and I was getting more anxious as he stayed silent for a long time.

"Okay, Mr. Mazzanti," He said, before he hung up and extended his arm backwards to hand me the phone.

I tried hard not to cry while the driver drove through some streets.

The car came to a halt and I panicked.

"What?" I asked, looking out the tinted window.

Anderson clinic.

Was what was written on huge shining board.

The driver opened Rose's side of the door and attempted to pick her up.

"I'll do it," I said, quickly pulling her into my arms. He backed away, apologizing and I got out, before turning to pick Rose up.

I ran after him towards the clinic. Well, he was walking normally. I had to jog.

Pushing the huge glass doors open, he held it open for me.

The receptionist stood up when she saw us enter.

"We need to meet Dr. Anderson," The driver muttered, putting a card on the table. She looked at the card then at my unconscious twin. Finally picking up the phone, she started speaking.

"We have someone from the Mazzanti family here, Sir," She said. She was silently listening for a while before she nodded.

"He'll be here soon," She said, looking worriedly at Rose. The driver turned to me and my mouth decided to have its own say.

"Thank you," I said and immediately zipped my mouth shut.

He smiled and nodded at me before getting distracted by footsteps approaching.

I turned around slowly, cautious of Rose's head which moved a lot with every movement.

The tall man, with a slight stubble, forest green eyes shining behind his spectacles strode towards the waiting area, his eyes searching for someone.

When he didn't find who he was looking for, he bothered to turn his gaze around and look at the others. His long doctor's coat was shining white.

I studied his movements, as he turned around completely to face who his gaze landed and stopped upon.

His eyebrows furrowed as he looked at me then at Rose in my arms.

"Bunny," He breathed out, before suddenly coming to a realization and rushing towards us.

He tried to take Rose from my arms and into his, but I stopped.

"I don't want to waste any time but I will carry her," I said, really fast.

"This way," He said, running towards where he came from. He entered the second door in that corridor and held the door open for me.

"Lay her down here," He instructed, before helping me lay her down properly.

He did some check ups. Checking her pulse, her blood pressure and stuff. During that time, I stood as near to Rose as possible, without disturbing the Doc.

"She's okay. I'll inject the medicine in to lower her body temperature, otherwise she's fine," He said, breathing out a sigh of relief while taking off the stethoscope and putting it on his desk. I sighed in relief. My tensed shoulders slumped.

He leaned against his desk sideways and crossed his arms while looking at me with a smile on his face.

"How've you been?" He asked, smiling sweetly.

"Who are you?" I asked, wondering how he knows me.

He pointed his thumb to himself and raised an eyebrow.

"Muffin?" He said, like that answered everything.

Well, it did.

"You've grown," I muttered, looking at the tall man up and down. "And you did become a doctor."

"Well, you told me to, didn't you?" He said, tilting his head to the side and letting out a chuckle.

I just stared at him with a straight face.

But why's he being so friendly? We don't even know each other now.

He was Asher's best friend back then. We called him Muffin because he brought them for us every time he was home. He was really sweet and caring.

I don't know him now.

'He doesn't like you now.'

"A smile won't hurt," He said, making me shake my head.

"We need to go," I said, moving forward to pick Rose up again. I walked out with him following me.

"Hope to see you again!" He said, waving at me, with a soft smile on his face.

The driver started walking as soon as he saw me.

I sat in the backseat again and kept Rose in my arms, pushing the strands of hair out of her face.

I put my head back and sighed.

Why does it have to be like this?

Now we're going back to the brothers after choosing our father over them.

Why are they still doing so much?

I closed my eyes, while rubbing my hand up and down on my sister's arm.

Maybe I fell asleep, because I woke up with a gasp when Rose moved a little.

"Levi?" She muttered, opening her eyes a little but closing them again. She put her slightly raised head back on my shoulder and sighed.

"You okay?" I asked, tightening my grip. She nodded, putting her hand on my upper arm.

"Water?" I asked, realising she might have a sore throat.

I looked in the rear view to find the driver already looking at me. He nodded and opened the glove compartment to pull a small bottle of water out. He raised his elbow to push his hand backward and hand me the bottle.

I opened the bottle and put it to Rose's lips. She opened her mouth and took a sip, humming in relief as the cold liquid soothed her dry throat.

She opened her eyes again and they landed directly on the car window.

Almost spat the water on my face.

"Where are we going?" She attempted to sit up. I pushed her back down.

"You're still weak." I frowned at her. She mumbled something which I didn't hear but stayed where she was.

"We're going to Lucian's house," I said, looking ahead, not wanting to make eye contact. "I called Asher."

She must be smiling brightly.

"Thank you," She said. I looked at her again and couldn't help the smile that appeared on my face.

"I'm sorry for choosing Father and making you choose him," She said. Her smile dropped.

"You didn't make me choose him," I muttered, dropping my smile. Some other things did, which was my fault.

"Just forget about it, okay?" I said, looking at her again. "We're never going back there."

She nodded and rested her head on my shoulder again.

The house came into view soon after, shining bright with the golden lights. My heart picked up the pace and the bruise on my chest screamed at me to run away but I shook off the feeling and closed my eyes.

"Levi?"

"Hm?" I asked, not opening my eyes.

"Will you call the social worker tomorrow?" Rose asked, making me open my eyes and furrow my eyebrows.

"I don't know. I can't decide. I feel so lost and confused," I muttered, helplessly.

I don't know what is wrong or what is right anymore.

"Miss Mazzanti." I looked towards my right sharply.

"Oh. Yeah," I said, clearing my throat. Before I could move to get out though, the driver stepped aside.

I looked up then looked down immediately when I saw Lucian standing in the door.

He moved forward and extended his arms, bending to get into the car.

Rose panicked and clutched onto me tighter.

"Let go of Bunny," He commanded, looking directly at Rose.

"She doesn't-" He cut me off by a simple turn of his head towards me.

"I don't care. You're both tired. It's way past midnight and I'm not dealing with this," He said, simply.

"Rose," He said, in a warning tone again. I looked down and released my grip on her, giving her the hint.

Rose looked ready to cry but she let Lucian lift her out of the car, while I rushed to be as close to her as possible.

He climbed up the stairs to the door. I opened it and he moved inside.

Shutting the door softly, I followed him upstairs.

For some reason, my mouth decided it was the right time to have its own say again.

"I'm sorry for coming back. We understand if you don't want us. It's better if you don't and we will leave as soon as I find a job," I rushed out, speaking so fast, there's no way he could've understood that.

But he did, judging by the slow turning of his head to the side to look back at me and the clenching of his jaw.

That made me shut up and look down. I focussed on my racing heartbeat instead.

Lucian helped Rose lay down on the bed and stood back up.

"Are you serious?" Jayden asked, as soon as he entered, looking at me ridiculously.

"What?" I asked.

"Why'd you go back to get the stupid stuff? You could've gotten caught," He said, frowning at me. "That was dumb."

"It was bought from your money. I couldn't leave it there for those b-" I stopped myself in time. "Idiots to use."

Lucian shook his head then looked at me.

"Follow me outside, Bunny."

"And leave Rose alone?" I asked, a glare already forming on my face.

He stopped walking to the door and turned around sharply, making me look away and my glare to drop.

"Are you defying me right now?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

I shook my head no and started walking. He watched me walk past him before I heard him follow me. Jayden stifled a laugh and walked out too.

"I want to know everything that happened there," Lucian said, as he leaned again the wall, with his hands stuffed in his pockets. His leg crossed over the other while he stared at me intently.

"Nothing much." I stopped when he raised his hand.

"First, look at me when you're speaking. Second, I know it's nowhere near 'nothing much'." He said, while I fiddled with my hands behind my back.

I clenched my jaw.

"If I'm saying nothing much, it means nothing much happened." I said, not even trying to hide the scowl on my face.

Then I looked up into his eyes and felt my hands turn cold.

His eyes had darkened considerably.

He stood up straight and walked towards me slowly. I jumped and took two steps back, fully expecting a slap and clenching my eyes shut.

"You're taking longer than necessary to get to the point. Let's take this discussion to my office," He said, simply when he was standing just two steps away from me maybe.

I opened my eyes again and released a shaky breath.

"But Rose will be alone. What if Dam-" I stopped myself again, unclenching my jaw because I was gritting my teeth.

"Damien?" He frowned. "He's not home. Asher and Josiah will be here to stay with her soon."

I released a sigh of relief and walked behind him to his office. Lucian strode confidently before me, while I shuffled behind him.

I hate this.

He entered his office and walked straight to his seat. I shut the door a little too loudly behind me after I entered. He settled with raising an eyebrow but didn't say anything.

I scowled and stood there awkwardly before he pointed to the chair across him, the middle one.

"Sit," He said.

I took a seat and fiddled with my thumbs, while he stared me down.

"Start talking. Don't miss any details," He stated, leaning back in his chair.

"We just reached his house and when we entered, a lady..."

My gaze must have shifted downwards, because he snapped after a second.

"Look up."

I jumped and looked up.

"This lady came up and he said, she was his wife. We were still annoyed that he didn't tell us about his wife then he introduced her kids."

"He didn't tell you?" Lucian asked, looking at me for confirmation.

I nodded.

"That's all that happened then I noticed Rose had fever after dinner today and when I returned with the glass of water she was unconscious. So I panicked and called Asher."

A loud bang was heard, shaking the walls of the office as he slammed his fist on the table, making me jump and look away nervously.

"I want the truth, Bunny," He said, leaning forward on his desk while looking at me through that piercing gaze.

I need Rose.

My hands started shaking slightly as I rubbed them together to get rid of the coldness.

"When I returned..." I gulped a little trying hard not to let the fear and nervousness show on my usual emotionless face. "Emilia was standing near the bed and Rose was standing before her, scared. She started saying sh- stuff about Rose, so I got angry and said something myself."

"Then she sat on the floor and pretended I pushed her and punched her and cursed at her. Xander got angry on seeing her crying, although she had no tears and was acting too bad," I stopped, "and we had an argument."

Lucian raised an eyebrow waiting for me to continue.

How does he freaking know there's something more?

"I'm tired I should go to bed," I stated, watching him clench his jaw.

A simple click of his tongue was all it took for me to sit back down.

I hate myself.

"That's all, Lucian. Stop forcing me." I said, gritting my teeth while looking at the collar of his shirt.

"You're not leaving until you tell everything. I know you won't call Asher for something as simple as an argument," He said, making me look into his now darkened silver-gray eyes. "Since Dad was obviously neglecting you, I'm complaining to the social worker."

I don't want to tell him.

But what choice do I have.

"Vincent entered the room and warned me not to curse at his sister. I got angry and I called her a dramatic bitch. So he slapped me." My volume decreased by the end while my speed increased. "Rose panicked and we argued after they left, so she told me to call Asher before she passed out."

"He did what?" Lucian gritted. I flinched a little and gulped.

"Slapped me," I mumbled.

"Hard enough to leave a mark? That's why your hair aren't tied?" He asked, making me snap my gaze to him. I nodded.

"So you were trying to hide it," He stated, making me look down at my fingers again. He released an angry breath.

"How dare you, Amira Levi?" His voice shook me. Literally. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest at the tone he was using.

"Show," He ordered, barely controlling his anger.

My hand raised on its own and tucked my hair behind my ear, showing my red cheek and the welt just near my ear, that was because of his ring slicing my skin.

Why does he even care?

'He's just doing it for fun. To mock you.'

Lucian picked up his phone and clicked a picture of the side of my face, before he started typing. Five minutes of agonizing silence later, he looked at me again.

"She will call Dad tomorrow."

"Ask her to find a foster home for us." The words came out on their own. Cold and emotionless.

"You're not going to foster care," He stated.

"You can't do anything about it. Claire said we could, if we didn't want to live with any of you."

"Legally, you need a valid reason for it. Like a proof of abuse or neglect. Illegally, you just need to be powerful, that's all. What power or proof do you have, sweetheart?" He said, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms.

"I have," I said, looking him in the eyes victoriously.

Aah. The feeling of having a one up on Lucian.
