A Fractal Divide
Lesivar is a city in ascendancy. With recent innovations in magical crafting, the common people are experiencing a boom in comfort and wealth. The nobility, long used to being the stewards of knowledge and power, struggle to adapt to the new world in which they find themselves. A precarious balance has been maintained throughout, but forces stir beneath the surface threatening to send the city spiraling into chaos. This is my first attempt at writing anything longer than a short story, and I welcome any feedback or corrections. I'm posting this as I write, with each chapter going live upon completion. My current pace is about a chapter a day, which I expect to take my through the end of November. From there, I'm shooting for a chapter every two-three days until the book is completed, along with an editing pass of what is already up. I'm planning on three POV characters with unique insight into the story as it unfolds. Each chapter will contain only one POV. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

In the not too distant future, the concrete of a new world has been laid to replace the dying Earth of old. In this world, one must provide value or perish in ignominy. Howard Manfield, like most pawns, fashions himself a king of his realm. Presiding over the corporatized dominion of genetic engineering, Howard was yet haunted by memories unknown to him. Here I shall attempt to tell the story of the small lives caught, unbeknownst to them, in the great and torrential downpour that we now call history. A baby's cry pierces the air as the midwife passes the baby to the awaiting hands of the father. Damon happily takes the baby from her hands holding her close to his chest not worried about the blood most likely staining his clothes. As quickly as the moment began it was lost, Damon was pushed out of the small room the baby still in his hands. "Stop! Wait! What's going on?" Damon yells trying to get back into the room. That's when he gets a look into the room noticing the many midwives rushing around attaching things to his wife lying on the bed, covered in blood and sweat from just giving birth."Ruby! Ruby!" Damon yells over the loud cries of the baby in his arms. Damon stops yelling the shock to great. He hears the midwife's declare her dead, the blood loss to severe. In that one lonely moment Damon realizes that he will do everything he can to keep the little girl in his arms safe, no matter the cost.---------Angels Mother died when she was only a few minutes old leaving her in the hands of her father, the great Damon Salvatore.
