《Living With Jared Padalecki》10/ timing is everything

"West, do you have a seven?" Maison asks her brother, who is sitting across the table. Me and all the kids are sitting in Jared's kitchen playing go fish.

West shakes his head, but he has a small smile on his face, so I can tell he is lying. I give him a look and quirk an eyebrow, and he gives in, throwing his seven across the table, almost angrily. Of course, the card is about as light as air, so throwing it with great effort doesn't really get it very far.

I laugh a little as Thomas reaches next to him and picks the seven up off the floor and hands it to Maison. She slaps her pair of sevens down with the rest of her matches and throws her hands in the air, a big smile on her face.

"I win!" She says. West sets his cards down on the table and gets up.

"I hate this game," he mumbles, clearly upset that his sister beat him twice in a row. He storms off into the next room. I sigh in frustration, lift JJ off of my lap, and follow West into the next room.

All the adults went out to dinner, so I got stuck babysitting. Well, technically, I didn't get stuck with it, because I sort of volunteered, but I figured they would make me do it anyways. I'm not really bothered, in fact, I love spending time with the kids because they are all so adorable and tiny and they remind me so much of their parents.

They said they should be home around nine, which is in about half an hour. They said that they want the kids to be in bed by the time they get home. I'm halfway there, considering that I've already made them dinner and helped them get baths. Then, they wanted to play so we played hide and seek for a while, then we played go fish.

"West, come on," I say, going into the other room and finding the little boy sitting on the bottom of the steps that lead upstairs. He has a little pouty angry face on.

"No!" He says, angrily. "I lose every single time!" When he says this, he reminds me of me when I was little. I smile a little.

"That's okay," I say, trying to think of something else to say that won't set him off again. "You might win next time." He shakes his head.

"I'm not gonna play ever again," he mumbles.

"Hey, if you keep on playing, you'll probably get really good at it and win a lot. But you have to learn how to lose before you learn how to win, okay?" I raise my eyebrows at him and give him a small smile. He sighs a little, but nods. "Okay, let's go back in the kitchen." He gets up and walks to the kitchen, and I trail shortly behind him.

I look at my watch and realize it's already quarter to nine. "Okay, guys, time for bed!" I announce, and they show very clearly that they are not ready to sleep yet. In fact, they don't even move from their seats. "Guys," I say louder, hoping that they will move on their own so I don't have to drag them to bed.

"Okay, you asked for it." I go up behind Thomas and Maison and lift them both up, one in each arm. I'm not sure how I manage to carry them both at once without falling over. "To bed we go," I say. They start laughing and yelling for their siblings to help them, causing me to smile. They are so adorable.

"Westy, help!" Maison says, laughing. I laugh at West's attempts to pull his sister out of my arms.

Before they left, Jared said to just let the kids all sleep on his and Gen's enormous bed, and they will sleep somewhere else. So, I have to drag the kids all the way up the stairs.

After five minutes of failed attempts, all the kids finally get into Jared's bed and under the blanket. "Okay. I'm going to shut the light off, and you guys are gonna go to sleep, okay?"

"Can you tell us a story?" Maison asks. I groan in frustration and look around the room, for no particular reason. I'm glad I do, though, because I spot a guitar setting against the wall by the door. I smile, thinking of a plan.

I walk over and pick up the guitar, holding it the proper way and strumming the strings once, trying it out. "Well, I don't know any good stories. Can I sing instead?" I probably shouldn't play this, it's probably Jensen's, but since I'm putting the kids to bed, he probably wouldn't mind.

"Okay," they say. I pull a chair up to the edge of the bed and begin to play one of the only songs I know on the guitar. This particular one is called 'Timing Is Everything'. I begin to sing, and since I've sang this song so many times, I hardly have to think about what I'm doing.

When the stars line up

And you catch a good break

People think you're lucky

But you know it's grace

It can happen so fast

Or a little bit late

Timing is everything

Through the rest of the song, the kids all slowly start to fall asleep, and by the end, they are snoring. I smile at the sight as I put the guitar back in its original spot, hoping that no one will notice I touched it. Before I leave, I take my phone out of my pocket and snap a quick picture of all the kids sleeping.

I shut the light off and leave the room, shutting the door behind me. Then, I decide to call Haley, since I'm bored and I haven't talked to her since last night.

"Hello?" Her voice asks through the phone. She sounds like she's been crying.

"Hey, it's Charlie."

"Oh, hey Charlie. What's up?" I can tell she is trying to force herself not to cry.

"Are you okay?" Is all I say. She sniffles a little.

"Not really. I just had a fight with my parents again," she says, and there's one word there that really gets me. Again. I'm guessing that she fights with them a lot, but I don't want to upset her more, so I decide not to question her about it. Maybe some other time.

"Oh," I say, my voice sort of blank. That's just fucking great, she's going to think I don't care. Quick, change the subject. "So, did you see Civil War yet?" I hear her sniffle again, trying to compose herself. When I texted her yesterday she said something about wanting to see the third Captain America movie.

"I was supposed to see it tonight at ten, but I don't think my parents will let me," she says.

"You're like, twenty, though. Haven't you ever snuck out?"

"Even so, I don't think I want to see it by myself."

"I'll go with you," I say, without hesitating. A second later, I pinch the bridge of my nose in frustration, just knowing that Jared probably won't let me stay out until midnight.

"Really?" Haley asks, and the little spark of happiness in her voice is what makes me decide to go no matter what Jared and Gen say.

"Yeah," I say. "Can you ask Jason to come, though?" I didn't really mean to say that, but I guess I just want to see him again.

"Ooh, I think I see a crush forming," she says, making me scoff.

"Whatever. Can you ask him to come? Please?"

"Okay, just don't be staring at him the whole movie."

"Why not? He's way hotter than Steve Rogers," I say, and regret it a moment later when I realize that she's his sister and most definitely will tell him that I said that. I smack myself on the head, feeling like the biggest idiot in the world. Haley just laughs.

"Well, I'll have to pick you up at nine thirty, so text me your address, okay?"

"Yeah sure. See ya," I say. We each say goodbye then hang up. What I didn't tell her was that I have already seen Civil War. It doesn't really matter, though, I would love to see it a second time, it was an amazing movie.

When I hear the door downstairs open and close, I go down there and see Jared, Jensen, Misha, and their wives. They look up at me as I come down the stairs.

"Hey, are the kids—?" Gen starts, but I cut her off.

"Bathed, fed, and asleep." I walk right by them and out to the kitchen. I hear them say goodbye to each other, and then I hear Misha and Jensen leave with their wives. I grab a glass out of the cupboard and get myself some water as Jared and Gen step into the room. "How was dinner?" I ask, trying to work my way up to the movie thing.

"It was okay," Jared says. "Expensive, though." He gets himself a glass of water, too. "You must be tired. I know when you put all those kids together, they can be a bit much."

"No, it wasn't that bad," I reply, trying to think of a way to ask them if I can go. "Can I hang out with my friend?" I ask, deciding that the easiest way to ask is to just ask.

"Um, right now?" Gen asks. "It's getting kind of late."

"Yeah, well, she has tickets to the new Captain America and she doesn't want to go by herself, so she asked me if I wanted to go." Jared and Gen exchange glances, and I see Jared shrug.

"What time would you be home?" He asks, and I'm pretty sure that means the answer is yes.

"It starts at ten and it's a two hour movie, so, probably around twelve thirty," I say, almost cringe-fully, really hoping that they will say yesterday. They are quiet again for a moment, then Gen looks at me.

"Okay, but I want you to come straight home after the movie," she says.

"Yeah, I know," I say. "Thanks, guys." I leave the kitchen and head upstairs to get ready.

"Why the hell did Steve have to kiss that girl?"

We just got out of the movie, and to be honest, I don't think any of us are tired at all. Haley keeps going on and on about it, what she liked and what she hated.

"Bucky is not going to be very happy about this," she says dramatically, causing me to laugh.

"I don't understand why you ship...Stucky so much," Jason says to his sister. I'm really glad that he came with us. He's very pretty to look at and he's really nice to talk to. "I mean, Steve was so great with Peggy; him and Bucky are more like brothers than anything." Haley scoffs.

"Here we go again," she mumbles. I smile a little as I get into the passenger's seat of Jason's truck, and Haley gets in the back.

"What are you smiling about?" Jason asks as he starts his truck and glances over at me.

"Nothing, it's just interesting to see British siblings fight." He rolls his eyes and pulls onto the road and heads in the direction of Jared's house. "That was a great movie. Thanks for letting me tag along."

"Yeah, no problem," Jason says. "But, I was a little surprised to see you actually watching the movie and checking me out. I mean, I am hotter than Steve Rogers, right?" He quirks an eyebrow at me and a small smirk plays on his face. I immediately blush, feeling a little mad at Haley for ratting me out.

"Haley, come on!" I say in frustration and turn to glare at Haley in the back seat. Jason laughs.

"You really think I'm hotter than Steve Rogers?" He asks, not in a snotty sort of way, but more like he's actually wondering what I think of him. The blush on my face deepens, and I start to deny what I said.

"No, Jase, I didn't—" I start to say, but he cuts me off.

"Wait, wait. Did you call me Jase?" I don't say anything, not really noticing that I called him that. I stutter for a moment, and have trouble coming up with something else to say.

"Look, all of this is very flattering, and I'm sorry if this hurts you at all, but I'm sort of...seeing someone else."

"Well..." I say, and I think I can feel my heart breaking. I don't know why, I mean, I've only known him for like, two days. "Good for you," I finish, the words coming out like venom. The fake smile on my face didn't really go with my words.

For the rest of the ride, I just stare out the window and ignore anything they say to me.
