《The Wolves ✓》10; bite

Familiar faces emerged from behind the trees and Freya felt her heart sink for the second time that day.

"Get away," Freya hissed, defensively.

She pulled out her pocket knife and took off her hoodie, cutting the sleeve off her shirt. Wrapping it firmly around Greg's wound, she tied it while keeping an eye on the men around her.

"Greg," Freya whispered, pushing his hair out of his face.

Freya attempted to pick him up but failed. It was then that she heard the leaves crunch under someone's foot that she turned around with the knife in her hand.

"I said get away!" she shrieked.

It was one of the wolves but she didn't know his name. He approached her with his hands up in defense.

When he didn't stop moving closer, Freya pulled out the gun from her jeans and pointed it at him. "I will shoot you."

The man looked to his side where Tristan and another man approached.

"What the hell is going on here?" Tristan asked, looking between Freya and the others.

"My brother's been shot, let us leave."

Tristan glanced at Greg before looking back at Freya. "He's alive."

Freya waved her gun, "Leave or I shoot."

Tristan took a step forward to which Freya turned her gun at him.

"You'll never get back to your house in time. Especially not when he's been shot," Tristan said. "You won't be able to carry him that fast."

"Just leave us alone, this happened because of all of you."

Tristan ignored her accusation, "You won't. His heart beat is slowing down."

"Shut up!" Freya yelled, trying to hold back the tears.

Tristan glanced at the other wolves before continuing forward. Freya's instincts kicked in and she shot Tristan in the shoulder.

"Fuck, I'm trying to help you!" he yelled, holding his shoulder.

"I told you to leave us alone. I'm not stupid, I saw you kill those men in the bar. You're killers and you're trying to kill us, too."

Suddenly, the gun was grabbed from Freya and she found herself being restrained by the bald man who'd found her initially.

"Let us go!"

She watched Tristan, despite his shoulder bleeding from the shot, walk to Greg. He put his hand on his chest and felt his heart beat slowly diminish.

Freya continued to cry, afraid that he'd kill her brother in front of her.

"Please let us leave. Let my brother go. Please!"

Tristan sighed and looked up at Freya and clenched his jaw. "Do you really want your brother to live?"

Freya nodded, "Yes, yes, please. Kill me instead and let him live. I'm begging you."

Tristan glanced at his friends who knew far too well that their Alpha was thinking about making the biggest mistake he could at that moment. He was going to go against his code and against the interests of the pack for a human, for the sake of his mate.

Freya watched in what seemed slow motion, Tristan move Greg's head to the side and pull his shirt down, slightly, exposing the top part of his chest.

And then he bit down on his flesh with a growl escaping.

When Freya's voice finally found her, she screamed like all hell had broken loose.

Billy silently approached the scene, alarmed by what he saw.

Tristan leaned back, his mouth and clothes stained with blood. He managed to get to his feet and staggered back.

Freya finally escaped the guy's hold as he loosened it up and ran to Greg who was still unconscious. She listened to his faint heart beat and then turned around.

Tristan saw the gun and dived in, snatching it out of her hand. She didn't stop and instead ran for Billy, ready to attack him but Tristan caught her in time.

Billy looked at Tristan who was wiping the blood from his mouth. "You didn't-"

"We need to get back to the pack," he said, slightly disoriented.

"What about these two?" Billy replied.

Freya continued to fight against Tristan's hold.

"We take them with us."

Billy frowned, "What? Are you su-"

"Yes, now you and Alex go and bring the car. We've wasted too much time already."

Freya's efforts to break free were faltering but she wasn't giving up either.

Tristan sighed and looked down at his shoulder. The wound had stopped bleeding but he still needed to get the bullet out.

"Let me go," Freya hissed, pushing him away.

"Can you just relax?" Tristan sighed again.

"My brother," Freya began to cry while struggling.

"He's not dead," Tristan said, looking at her.

"Stay away from me you freaking cannibal."

Tristan sighed, "I saved his life."

"By eating him?" Freya yelled.

Freya continued crying and fighting when minutes later, they heard a car swerve nearby.

"Take the boy," Tristan said to Billy, picking up Freya without much effort and swinging her over his shoulder.

Freya was blindfolded and her hands were tied behind her back. She'd stopped crying 15 minutes into the drive when she fell asleep on the seat.

The sound of the tyres on gravel woke her up but still being blindfolded, didn't know where they were.

She felt someone pull her out of the car and after an initial stumble, was led by her arm.

"Where's Greg?" she asked, her throat sore from the crying and yelling. Her blindfold was removed and the light hurt her eyes.

Surprised to see a woman, Freya opened her mouth to speak but the woman interrupted her. "Follow me."

Freya didn't speak for the rest of the walk and she thought that some part of her was content with dying. She was tired and her feet were blistered. Her legs ached and her head was spinning. Death just sounded like a long nap at that point.

She heard the clicking of a door knob and then felt a slight breeze from a door being opened.

Freya looked around, her eyes slowly adjusting to the light indoors. She was in a room with beige painted walls and a vase of flowers near the window where the sun entered the room.

"Where's my brother?" she finally asked, looking at the woman with dark hair. She had a slightly crooked nose and a baby face but her green eyes were extraordinary to look at.

"Your brother is downstairs with the pack doctor."

"Let me see him," Freya began.

Something flickered in the woman's eyes and suddenly didn't look too friendly. "Human, you are a temporary guest here. You do not get to make demands."

Freya frowned unable to think of what to say to the woman who was overreacting. And when she didn't reply, the woman turned to leave. "There's an attached bathroom over there if you need it."

"My hands," Freya said, holding her tied hands out in front of her.

The woman shrugged and left the room, locking it as she did.

Downstairs, Tristan changed his clothes after having the bullet removed. His wound was healing quickly.

Walking into the medical room, he looked at Greg and then at Dr. Hilton, their pack doctor and who once was the best in the area long ago.

"How's he doing?" Tristan asked.

"He's transitioning, Alpha."

Tristan nodded as if he didn't already know that. Greg was covered in sweat and occasionally shivered which Tristan knew was part of the process. "There's no way of reversing this then?" he tried.

"Not that I know of. What's done is done. It's on this human now to survive the next couple of hours."

He stayed silent.

Dr. Hilton took off his stethoscope and put it on the table, ready to leave. "I'll have Georgia stay with Greg. If you need me, you know where I am."

"Thank you, doctor."

After he left, Tristan crossed his arms over his chest and watched Greg. He felt foolish and that was something new to him. Nobody from his pack had bitten a human let alone affiliated with one for years. And now suddenly, the Alpha had converted one and brought him home.

Tristan left the room when Georgia walked in. He found his sister standing by the living room door, smoking a cigarette.

"Jade, do you have to smoke inside?"

"Well, I thought that since all the rules are breaking around here, why shouldn't I join in?"

"You know that I didn't do this on purpose."

"Yeah well, Tristan. It happened. And now there's a pissy human upstairs in the guest bedroom and an abomination transitioning in the medical room."

Tristan glared at her and walked into the living room.

Jade sighed and followed her brother. "You know you don't have to wait. You could just dispose of them both."

"What?"

"The smoke is here and they'd never make it out alive if you kick them out."

Tristan looked at her, shaking his head. "That's a really fucked up idea, Jade," he muttered before pushing past her and then heading upstairs.
