《My Best Friend's Brother》28

I wake up I don't know when. I slowly open my eyes to look at my bearings. It's dark in here but I spot a small hole in the roof that brings in a little light.

The damp smell and humid atmosphere tell me there's water somewhere. I try to listen in to my surrounding. I hear the rush of running water to my left. The river.

I must be at the abandoned cabin near the river. As far as I know, not many people come around these parts. It'll be hard for anyone to hear me scream.

Wait! How can I scream with a handkerchief tied around my mouth. If only I can find my way out.

I try to get up from the chair I'm sitting on only to realise that I'm tied to it. How the hell am I going to get out of here.

Sitting there doing a lot of nothing except thinking about a thousand possibilities can sure exploit your energy. I soon fall asleep.

I wake up to a growling stomach a few hours later. I'm hungry. More importantly, my baby must be starving.

A few seconds later, a door in front of me opens and out walks a petite figure. It's of a woman. She walks over to a wall and lights come on.

I instinctively close my eyes to keep out the blinding lights. I open them slowly to enable them adjust to the light intensity.

"Get up, bitch. I know your awake."

That voice. Denise.

I look up and sure enough, Denise is towering over me with a smirk on her face.

"It's really a sight for my sore eyes to see you tied up. If only Drake were here to witness it himself. He really wanted to destroy you," she says.

It's so ironic. I should be the one who wants to destroy him. Not him destroy me.

Denise goes around and unties the handkerchief from my mouth.

"Here, I brought you a bun and water."

"Why?"

"What?"

"Why do you bring me something to eat, yet you want me to die?"

Her facial expression changes to a glare. She places her hands on either side of the chair and comes all up in my face. "Because I want to see you suffer before I kill you."

"So, what happened to Drake?" I ask.

I try very hard to keep my cool. If I'm going to get out of here, I might as well do it with a level head.

"Oh. I had no more use for him so…" she mimics the shape of a gun with her hand and shows me she shot him. "…right here, in the head and disposed his body into the river. Just exactly what I'm going to do to you."

She gets the bun out of the paper bag and shoves it in my mouth. The thing fills my mouth and I hardly have time to chew. She laughs at the sight.

I swear to God I'll make her pay.

She places her phone on the table and gets the bottle of water. She walks over to me while unscrewing the lid. Instead of giving me the water to drink, she pours it over me and I struggle to at least get some into my mouth.

"I'll come back later to torture you. I have something to take care of." She says and turns to leave.

When she gets to the door, she turns around and says, "don't do anything you might regret while I'm done."

I close my eyes for a fraction of a second and take the time to look around. She didn't switch off the lights so I can see the everything clearly now.

I notice a small piece of glass on the floor and discover it's from a broken glass. A ding startles me.

Is that a phone?

I look to where the sound came from and sure enough, Denise's phone lies on the table. I can't believe she left it. Is this a trap? Well, who cares!

A plan immediately starts forming in my head. I fidget with the ropes that bind my hands but it's no use.

I remember the pieces of glass on the floor. I have to topple over. I push the chair on it's side and I fall with a loud thud. I feel around my back until I find the glass.

I hope it's sharp enough.

I start cutting the ropes. It feels like forever before I cut it through. I free my hands then my legs. Please, don't come back now!

I rush to the phone. No password. Great! I dial Joe's number. He picks up on the second ring.

"Where's Erica, you bitch?" He bellows.

"Joe listen to me…"

"Erica? Oh my lov…"

"Shut up, Joe and listen to me. I'm at the abandoned cabin by the river. Please get to me quick."

"Yes, baby, I'll…"

"And don't call back. She will…" I hear footsteps approaching.

Oh my God, she's back.

I immediately end the call and place the phone back in it's original spot and run back to the chair. I tie a small knot that I know will be quicker to untie around my legs and I bundle up the ropes that bound my arms behind my back.

I take a deep breath before the door opens. Denise walks in. She walks over to her phone and picks it up.

"Back so soon?" I ask.

"I just wanted to get this," she shows me her phone and walks out.

I let out a breath of relief. Now, to find my way out. I go to the door and find it locked. There are no windows in this room. I guess I have to outwit her.

I go back and take my seat. I once again retie the knots and await Denise's return.

Meanwhile…

Joe's POV

"What do you mean I should wait out?" I inquire from the police officer.

"Sir, your presence there will only interfere with our mission which will in turn endanger your fiancé. Please listen, or else we shall lock you up." Officer Ramirez says.

There's absolutely no way in hell am I going to sit around and wait. But I must agree with the officer.

"Alright. I'll stay here."

"Good. Let's move it," he shouts to the other officers.

I watch until the cars disappear around the corner and I then jump into my car. I know the shortest route to the cabin.

Hang in there, my love. I'm coming for you.

Erica's POV

Denise bursts through the door. She matches over to me and delivers an earsplitting slap across my face.

Goddamit! It stings.

"You bitch," she screeches, "what did you do?"

"What did I do?"

"You called Joe."

"How could I? I'm tied up."

She comes to check the ropes and I use that to my advantage. I elbow her chin. She curses while I untie the knots I made. In no second, I lunge at her. I knock her over and she screams when she falls to the floor.

I take the chance and run out the door and into a hall. I see a set of stairs leading up. I take them and come into what I think is the living room of this place.

I spot the door leading out and run to it. I fumble with the locks until they give. I open the door and run out into the forest. There's no path, so I run among the trees.

"Get back here, bitch!" I hear Denise yell through the trees.

I run into a clearing. There's another small cabin, more like a barn. I can't run forever. I'm already out of breath. I hear a gunshot not far behind me.

Without second thought, I run into the barn. I notice stack upon stack of hay. I run behind one stack and squat.

"I know you're in here. I'm going to kill, you know. It doesn't really matter how much you run. I'll still find you."

I hold my breath, making sure not to make a sound. I hear sirens in the distance. They get closer and closer.

Denise laughs, "even they will not save you. No one can save you now."

"Denise, stop!"

Joe? What is he doing here?

I take a chance and peer over a stack. I see Denise pointing the gun at Joe. Oh, hell no!

"Stop? I can't stop," she says.

"Yes, you can. It's over. The police will be here in a minute."

"And in that minute, I'll have killed you and your slut."

She goes to pull the trigger but I jump out from my hiding spot and immediately lunge at the gun. A gunshot sounds in the air. I pull at her hair and she screeches. She manages to land a blow at my stomach. I keel over.

Joe runs over to me and hugs me. The pain is like a bitch. I just hope my baby is okay. Joe soon leaves my side and tries to unhand Denise of her gun.

It falls to the ground not far from her. I use the little strength I have and run to take the gun. Denise bites Joe's finger and he immediately let's her go.

She runs to a log and picks it up. I remove the safety from the gun and when she goes to hit Joe's head, I pull the trigger.

The impact sends me back to the ground and I soon here a loud thud. I manage to sit up with Joe's support. He hugs me tight.

"We're going to be fine." He gives me small kisses me. "I love you, Erica."

He helps me stand up. I look at Denise's lifeless body. I managed to shoot her right over her heart. God, help me! I hope I never have to kill again.

The police comes rushing into the small barn. One officer looks at Denise, and then at me. He walks over and removes the gun from my hand.

Joe walks me out to the ambulance and the paramedics soon start doing there job. My consciousness wavers and I'm told to lie down on a stretcher, where I soon fall into oblivion.
