《Starting Over In Sin City》Chapter Thirty-One

"Does everyone know what they are doing?" Drew asked having just gone over the plan as we sat in the garage at his mothers. He knew nobody would find us here.
I nodded my head, saying "Yes"
At the same time.
Lana didn't say anything but she did nod in acknowledgment when he caught her eyes in the mirror after she didn't answer out loud.
He turned in the drivers seat of my Jeep to face me.
"Once Cole calls it's on, no second guessing this, no turning back or we're all fucked" he warned
"I'm not turning back from shit" I said harshly as I looked out the window.
He nodded his head as the left corner of his mouth pulled into a smile.
"Good, because I have no idea what we're walking into, it could be one Hell of a fight"
His phone rang, making my heart race. I looked at Lana and we shared the same look.
"It's him" he announced as he looked up from his phone meeting my eyes.
here we go
"Hello?" Drew answered his cell phone like nothing was wrong.
"Hey boss...yeah she's alright, she was with Bennie, she's waiting for you to tell her where to go"
I listened in on the conversation in anticipation, fighting for my life and the life of my friend is an entirely different situation than what we're doing here. If Cole isn't a part of this then I am making a huge mistake and it will ruin everything between us.
My right leg was bouncing on its own as Drew listened to whatever Cole was telling him to do. I looked at him and moved my hand in a circular motion telling him to speed it up and get off the phone.
Lana sat forward and grabbed my hand. She was nervous, she has as much to lose as I do. We held each other's eyes, speaking without speaking.
We were both scared but I was also ready.
"Yep, alright see you in an hour" he hung up having spent most of the call listening to Cole talk.
"I need a cigarette" I announce
"I need that and a drink" Lana said under her breath.
"Lana, are you sure you can do this? You play a big part and if you can't do it, I need to know, it's okay if you can't" I told her in a reassuring voice.
She snapped her head up to me, searing her blue eyes into me.
"No, I have to do this, I have to know...just like you do" she took a deep cleansing breath and blew it out.

"Okay, we have one hour to get the money. We don't have to follow him because I know where he's going to be and where he is right now, his place but he's leaving now" Drew's voice lowered and so did his eye contact.
I think he knows more than he's leading onpto about the whole Cole situation and the night at Lana's. I don't want to kill him, but I will if he's sabotaging us.
"Alright, let's do it, here are the keys to my moms car" he said handing me the Honda keys.
Since my custom Jeep stuck out like a sore thumb, Drew thought it would be smart to ditch it and use his moms car that no one will notice or care about.
I grasped them tightly in my hand and looked back at Lana
"Ready?" I asked then took a deep breath myself. I could feel my blood pressure rising inside me.
"As I'll ever be"
"Alright if shit goes sideways, we meet up back here. Don't get caught or we're all dead. Are you sure you don't want to bring anyone in on this, like Bennie?" Drew asked
"I'd love to have Bennie with us but I can't ask her to do that. She's been in the club too long to expect anything from her other than loyalty to Duck and the club. Let's just stick to the plan we have, less ways to fuck it up"
He sighed and nodded
"Lana you're up" he said opening the door of the Jeep ready to put the plan in action.
We both got out of the car and into his moms grey Honda Pilot. I rolled the window down and waited for him to lead the way.
Drew threw on his cut over his hoodie and got on his bike.
"Hailey" he called to me before starting it up.
"Yeah?"
He smiled his familiar smile and called over to me.
"You really have become a Phoenix, remember that if you need to dig deep"
"In case I don't get the chance to tell you, thank you for everything Drew"
He met my eyes and nodded, leaving it at that, then he jump started the bike and we pulled out.
Lana lit up two cigarettes and handed me one.
"Call him" I told her sternly "sell it Lana, or he won't come alone like last time, then we're fucked before we even start"
She nodded, with a look of terror on her face and sadness in her eyes, like she already knew he was guilty.
A big huff of air left her mouth and she dug in her purse getting her phone.

"Here goes nothing. At least I won't have to fake being scared, I'm about to shit myself" she whispered.
"Good, it'll play well to his weakness for you, use it to your advantage"
"Who are you?" She asked in disbelief at my callousness.
"A bad bitch, make the call, I'm going to grab something quickly" I told her pulling into a parking lot.
I felt as if someone else was in my body calling the shots and I was watching from the outside. I didn't recognize myself but that was a good thing.
"Not to put pressure on you, but everything...like everything...the entire plan is riding on this Lana, don't blow it" my tone was in warning as I got out of the suv. I saw her face go white.
"I'm not trying to be a bitch or mean but I'm trying to scare you into realizing that this is my life, literally my survival I'm talking about here, not just a break up with my boyfriend. So please, to save my life, make the phone call. I'll be back in five minutes, I love you Lana and I'm sorry you got sucked into this"
Maybe that's all she's needed to be reminded of because she sat up a little straighter and bit the inside of her cheek, pain to get her adrenaline going.
"I'm good, go inside" her tone was much calmer so I decided it was now or never to let her make the call before she lost any confidence.
I went straight to the counter of the military surplus store that was on the same street as the 24 hour pawn. A rough looking woman dressed in a biker top and camo jacket was behind the counter.
"Hi, do you have tasers and any other self defense items I could see?" I asked and had to laugh to myself at the look on her face by that question.
"Yeah, over here" her gruff voice sounded like she smoked a pack a day.
She walked over a couple feet to display case that held a bunch of different tasers.
"I'll take four of the black one please. Any mace or knives?" I asked
Again her face was priceless with surprise. I looked like I would be shopping for camo teeshirts to crop, not weapons.
"Are you in some kind of trouble?" She asked
"Nothing I can't handle. Can I just get the tasers, four cans of mace and four of the knives up on the right hand corner there with the leather belt clip please?" I said as I pointed on top of the glass cabinet showing her the items.
"Okay" she grabbed the knives out. I could tell she wanted to ask more questions but didn't.
"$489, cash or debit?"
"Cash" I handed her five $100 bills.
"Keep the change" I told her and grabbed the bag off the counter.
I jogged back to the car and got inside scaring Lana who was crying.
"What happened?"
She shook her head.
"I'm just freaking out, he's coming, alone. I told him if he didn't he'd regret it"
"Good job, now we wait but look at all of these goodies!" I said taking the taser out of the bag.
"Jesus Christ Hailey! What the actual fuck?!"
"What? Protection" I said
as I pressed the button, making it crackle and pop with the electric current that takes someone to their knees, making us both scream when the sound was a lot louder than I thought it would be.
We broke out into a fit of laughter and then both went in for a hug at the same time, holding onto each other tight.
"I love you" we said at the same time.
After a comforting hug I got into the bag and pulled everything out.
"Here, there are two of each thing for each of us. Put a taser in your purse and one in your pocket. Same for the mace. Clip the knife on your pants and put one in your purse, just in case.
She nodded and took the bag and immediately started putting everything where I told her. I did the same.
"Okay, this is it, let's go get this ball rolling" I smiled at her and climbed out of the drivers seat.
I went all the way back to the third row seat that was up and dove over it into the small space that was created between the hatch and the third row seat. It was a perfect place to hide and smuggle me into Cole's place once we got the key into the safe where my money was.
Ghost, he was the key in...he just didn't know it yet.
If neither Ghost or Cole had nothing to do with our attempted murder, then I hope they appreciate the plan we're about to execute on them.

Taking care of someone was hard. Harder still when the only job you can find is a graveyard shift at your brother's school, which is apparently haunted by a man claiming to be the devil. Oh, no, how horrific. I'm so scared. So, terribly, horribly, atrociously scared. Whatever shall I do? My life as a janitor is a simple one, and that clingy asshole won't leave me alone, so forgive me if I don't put enough gravitas into the situation. The only really scary prospect to this whole thing is that the KKK is in town, and I really don't want to deal with their bull. The gang activity is enough, why do we need to have an all-out war on school grounds? That will be too much for me to clean as a poor, lonely graveyard janitor. Old Summary: My gaze raised, and I observed the darkened face of the ghost, only visible feature being glowing red eyes. They faded into darkness, and I thought the offer over even as the body seemed to grow heavier in my arms. My first friend since this whole thing started, a few years ago. My brother needed to survive. That didn't mean I did. "What's the price?"

8 117Odd One Out
Oddball Mabel has always been quirky. Maybe it's due to the fact that she was homeschooled or perhaps it was because of her parents who sheltered her a little too much from the world. In fact, she tells him this on their first encounter. Clearly needing all the help she can get in this department, she turns to her neighbour, who by the sound of it, gets all the action he wants. Can grieving and guarded firefighter Marcus help Mabel learn the ways of love? Or will she teach him how to live life with your heart on your sleeve?
