《Wasn't looking for love till I found you.》9|Sunset and Conversations

You know, what's the beauty of time? It never waits for anyone; it keeps going on minding its own business.

It has been a week since I started working in Henderson Inc. and everything ever since has been so busy and engrossing for me. I didn't have encounters with Sebastian for the rest of the week. It was usually because when I was home he was not, or when he came I would already be in my room. I would either leave early or come home late, the timings always differed for me. But still, I always kept his dinner in the fridge just as he did when I am home late. One time, he wrote his number on a sticker paper and stuck it on my room's door, with a written note, which read,

''In case you need a driver, gimme a call''

I rolled my eyes at his idiocy and wrote ''don't think I'll need you anytime soon, my royal chauffeur/ asshole'' and stuck it on his wall. But nevertheless, I saved his number. In case I needed him.

The new project in the office was very complicated which needed much effort, and I was grateful that Mr. Jacob was helping me out without any signs of frustration. I was a little nervous as he always asks for my input at first and then gives his opinion; which might be to ensure that I don't do mistakes in the future.

The more I worked with that man, the more respect I grew for him. Surely, he was a tough person, he did have a hard exterior but he did have a great heart as well. Like whenever we would take breaks he would go and bring two cups of coffee or just simply laugh at some of his own jokes. He reminded me a lot about my father.

Just the difference was, my father never hesitated to display his love for me; I was always treated like a princess in his eyes.

So, back to the present. Today is Friday for which just before 5 pm the office is empty. Watching the clock strike five, I strolled outside the office and hopped into the Uber I hired.

I closed my eyes and let out a big sigh. My phone binged with a message gaining my attention.

Did I mention that today we three were having a night out? If I didn't then let me kindly add, it was lunch break as usual in which Jen suddenly squealed and said we need to have a night out and that we, as in Maver and I need to meet her boyfriend. My first response was to immediately decline the offer but she didn't take any answer as a no, so after that, I thought since it had been months I have had a night out. I guess it won't be that bad.

Hopefully.

I responded, stupidly smiling at my own retort.

The road was free allowing the cars to rush in their designated places. The sun had a hue of pink and crimson across its horizon. It was a beautiful and magical scene.

I sighed and tipped the Uber driver when I reached the apartment. I really needed to get a car of my own.

As usual, the house was empty. The sunsets crimson rays were penetrating through the living room's balcony's large window. I walked inside the balcony and kept my hands on the rails. The air was fresh cool and slow. Everything felt so mesmerizing, it was as if I was breathing after a long time.

After relishing some alone time, I got inside and showered. I didn't know what to wear, I was never good at selecting dresses, and for all of my parties, it was Jess, who selected my dresses. She is my best friend but now she is in England doing an internship with a fashion company, we haven't spoken for a long time.

After any graduation, let it be school, college or university everyone becomes busy with their lives, it's not that they don't want to be connected, well some don't but some just don't find the time to do so. The last conversation I had with Jen was her asking me how I was doing after the breakup which I replied with a short 'good'. Sometimes, I wonder if I am the one who pushed her away.

Everyone forgets the promises of meeting again or keeping in touch because, for everyone, their promise to their future is more important.

I grabbed a red silk off-shoulder sleeveless dress that reached my mid-thigh, matching it with some black high-heels and a black clutch. I did some light makeup, concealing my dark circles, a sharp eyeliner with a matte maroon lipstick, and of course highlighter.

I stared at the reflection in front of me, who was not a girl anymore.

Do you know what's the hard part? Accepting that you've grown up and that you've responsibilities over your shoulders.

Exhaling sharply, I smiled at my own reflection and was ready to leave. We decided that we all would be meeting in the nightclub downtown, but Maver asked to drive me, which I kindly declined but he wouldn't take no for an answer so here was I waiting for my ride.

I heard that the nightclub was new as well as very expensive, but it's nothing my income can't cover.

Cocky much?

Not really.

I didn't know if Sebastian came home on Fridays, after all, I barely knew him. But still, I decided to write a note that said, 'I might be late'.

With that, I waited for my ride. After a while, my phone binged with a message,

Locking the door, I replied with a fast short answer,

Walking towards the parking lot I noticed a black sleek car waiting, rolling down the windows I saw Maver mischievously smirking at me.

''Well, if you don't look hot!'' That's the first thing I heard after getting in his car. I rolled my eyes, I took in his appearance he wore a white t-shirt underneath his black jacket pairing it with black pants, and it suited him.

''You don't look bad yourself'' I shrugged and looked ahead.

He ignited the engine, as the car roared to its life making its way to our destination.

We spoke here and there, Maver shooting his jokes, some were making me laugh, which boosted his ego to make more jokes; and low humming music was playing in the background. After a while, we grew silent, it was not an uncomfortable one, but Maver still had to break it with his childish whine.

''Do we really need to meet this douchebag called Jen's boyfriend'' he whined the thousandth time making me groan.

''Yes Maver she really wants us to meet him'' I replied annoyed.

''I wish I hadn't need to'' he grumbled. Wait!

''Maver why don't you want to meet her boyfriend?'' I softly asked, turning towards him.

Did he have feelings for her?

''Do you have feelings for her?'' I blurted yet softly. He stilled for a moment and burst out into a roar of laughter while I kept staring at him with a horrified expression.

''Okay you don't'' I muttered looking outside the window, as pink coated my cheeks in embarrassment. What was I thinking?

''You-thought-you-thought-Oh my god! I cannot take it'' He said bursting into laughter once again.

''Okay, I am calm'' He replied stifling a laugh looking at my glare but still burst into laughter once again.

''Okay, I am really calm'' He replied calming down.

''Why did you think that anyway?'' He asked with a biting his lower lip to stifle his laughter.

''You guys seem to be close and the way you hate her boyfriend without meeting him, I just thought, you know'' I shrugged.

''Yeah, but that doesn't mean, I have feelings for her'' He replied.

''So why don't you want to meet her boyfriend? If that's not the case?'' I asked frowning.

''Because she has already gone through so much. She has had her heart broken so many times. She gets attached too soon, Ella'' He whispered softly, his eyes softening.

''We knew each other since childhood it's just we started speaking in High school. I have been there through all her heartbreaks, just as she was in mine.'' He told the last part too quietly as if he was talking to himself.

''No matter how tough she acts like, she still has a heart of a baby, she's very vulnerable and now this dick'' he spat, ''She seems to like him a lot, and God forbid if he leaves her she will break down again'' He whispered looking at me.

'' Well, let's hope nothing like that happens'' I shot him a soft smile while he nodded.

''She needs someone you know'' I told him after a moment of silence.

''She needs someone to love, to cherish, to grow old with'' I softly told him looking ahead.

''She's strong, you know why? Because she didn't give up, she still held the hope that she might find her true love and that's what makes her strong. Whereas some us just left the hope of being in love with someone, or that someone loving us back'' I whispered. Just like me.

''I know'' He nodded looking ahead as well.

''So, you need to support her. You need to be there for her. She loves you, Maver. Today, it matters to her a lot maybe because she was always whining about meeting him and you declining it all the freaking time broke her heart? She wants you to like him, maybe he is really special to her'' I insisted.

''Well we will just see today won't we?'' he asked glancing in my way with a small tug on his lips. I nodded shaking my head amusingly.

It was after a few moments the car came to a halt in front of a large building.

''We are here'' Maver sighed.

''Behave'' I muttered, opening the door.

''I will mother'' he mocked and rolled his eyes.

Before I could step down the car, Maver gently held my arm making me turn around with a frown.

''I promise I will tell you my story, will you tell me yours?'' He asked softly.

''I will'' I nodded with a smile and stepped out of the car.

No matter how different I and Maver were; we were deeply hurt by someone who we chose to believe. I don't know what his story is, but turning around, when I see him come by my side with a lop-sided grin, I know one thing, that I found the friend, I never had.
