《Alpha Mate》XI

I looked at Calum hesitantly. I wasn't sure what he was doing back in our room looking so angry. He couldn't be mad at me for I had done nothing wrong today, but I was still scared to talk for he might snap at me.

Finding courage I spoke up, "Hello."

At hearing my voice, his features began to relax. "Hey, babe."

"Stressful day at the office?"

"That would be an understatement."

"What are you doing back so soon?" I asked no longer afraid.

"You rather I stay in the office?"

"That's not what I meant."

He smiled. "I know, I'm just teasing. I wanted to have lunch with my mate this afternoon."

"Are we going down to the dining room then?"

"No. I thought we could eat in here today. We can talk since it's more private than the dining room."

I was happy to hear this news. There wouldn't be another silent meal for me. The fact that he actually wanted to spend time with me made me see that he really was going to start trying to be a better mate.

"That sounds great."

"I'm glad that you're ok with my plans. I've arranged for one of the food servers to bring lunch up to our room. It should be here any minute." He told me.

"What are we having."

"Hamburgers and French fries."

I began salivating after hearing what I would be eating soon. Hamburgers were one of my favorite foods.

"Yes. They're finally serving me the good stuff." I said raising my arms.

He chuckled at my antics. "They were never serving you bad food before. I made sure of it."

"Yeah but they gave me a lot of salads."

"You're not a fan of salads?"

"They're alright but wolves are carnivorous animals and I'm part wolf. I like meat better than plants." I told him.

"I would have to agree with that statement."

Someone knocked on the door and Calum turned to answer it. A petite young lady was on the other side of it. The best part was that she carried two large plates full of mouthwatering food. Just the aroma of it was enough to make my stomach growl.

Calum grabbed the plates and set them on the kitchen island. His brows furrowed as we sat down to eat.

"What's wrong?"

"Has Lucas been in here?" He asked. It had been a while since breakfast, so Lucas' scent was still there although not as strong. Calum didn't sound angry as he questioned me, just curious, but I knew if I told him the truth he wouldn't like it.

"Yes." His eyes quickly darkened so I continued on to calm his wolf, "He was only in here for less than a minute though. He brought in my food for breakfast but left once he set it on the island."

Calum's eyes turned back to his normal shade of brown. Lucky for me, I had always been a skillful liar. I didn't feel bad for stretching the truth when I knew telling Calum about my talk with Lucas wouldn't do good for anyone.

"That's not his job. Next time, I'll make sure only one of our servers brings you your food. Lucas needs to be outside your door at all times to protect you if we have any intruders."

"What if my guards stayed by my side? Someone could get in through window just as well as the door."

This was not a good thing to say as it made Calum angry once again.

"That's what you want? To have Lucas in your room with you all day?" Jealousy radiated off of him like a disease.

"No, I'm just thinking about my safet-"

"At the bottom of those windows outside are other guards. This room is extremely protected from all sides. You are probably the safest person in America right now."

"I'm sorry. I didn't realize." I apologized. Fighting with him would only make this worse.

"Do you have a thing for Lucas?"

"No. Of course not. I've only briefly seen him in passing and he's not my mate."

"Alright."

An awkward silence followed our argument. I picked at my fries after being accused of cheating on my mate. I didn't like that he was so possessive he couldn't even trust me alone.

After Calum finished the food on his plate, he walked over to the pantry. Grabbing three packets of Cosmic Brownies, he sat down next to me once again.

"Are one of those for me?" I teased.

"Don't judge me. I have a special taste for Cosmic Brownies."

"More like an obsession. I saw all those boxes."

"So you've been snooping around, huh?" He asked.

"Of course. It's the only way I could find out all you're secrets. Like you're obsession with Cosmic Brownies."

"You're not going to let this go are you?"

"Nope."

"For your information, I like all brownies but the bakers got tired of baking me a pan each day so I stocked up on Cosmic Brownies. They're my favorite treat. My mom used to make me brownies all the time when I was little." His eyes got a far off look as he reminisced.

He briefly opened up to me and it was nice to find out more about him. I didn't ask about his mom since it sounded like she was no longer here and that was a sensitive topic. Baby steps were enough for now.

"That sounds nice."

"Yeah. I should head back to my office now. Do you need anything before I go?"

"Actually, I wanted to ask you something. Could I get more clothes here?" I asked him.

"Sure. I'll have someone drop some off."

"No. I don't want new clothes. I want to go get my old clothes and things."

"I don't think that's a good idea."

"Please? I promise I'll come back and you can send as many guards with me as you want. It won't even take me that long."

"Fine. I'll have it arranged for you to retrieve your items from your old pack tomorrow." He caved.

"Thank you!"

I hugged him before you left the room. If I could get him to let me out of this room for a small trip tomorrow, someday he would let me be free to roam the pack grounds.
