《Just Business?》The Only One

It's been the worst four weeks of my life. I love Olivia, but I can't be with her knowing that she's in love with another guy. I decided that I've had enough time to be able to be around her and not freak out. So we were back to having lunch as the three musketeers. It was awkward at first, but got better. I missed seeing her smile, so I always joke around and try to get her to laugh. I miss her voice and I just miss us. Unfortunately, she probably hasn't missed me. She's been so busy working, and probably out with this other man, that I haven't even crossed her mind. I always check my phone to see if she's texted or called me. Nope. I'm slowly getting over her, but I don't want to. I keep wishing that she'd run over to my apartment and say, "I was wrong. He means nothing to me, and I'm in love with you." Of course that hasn't happened, and probably never will. I should be used to always losing by now, but this time, it really hurts.
I walked back to my desk after lunch. Having lunch with Bill has become the highlight of my day. I miss him so much, bit he's made it clear that he doesn't want me back. I shouldn't have been unsure, but Mr. Wright has that power to mess up my thoughts. I was setting up his schedule for next week, when he called me into his office. I was confused, but slowly got up and went in. My heels clicked on the floor, and he smiled. He asked me to sit down, and I did. He took a deep breath and began to talk. He seemed so nervous. I was getting fired.

"Olivia, I'm sorry if you were busy, but I really needed to talk to you."
"About what?"
Me getting fired, that's what.
"Well, I'm sure you know by now that Lily and I broke up. I realized that I love another girl."
"She called and told me. We thought you were gonna propose. Who could be better than Lily?"
"You."
"What?"
"I love you, Olivia."
"Sir, are you sure?"
"As sure as I've ever been. It took me a while to realize it, but I do."
"Wow."
"I know you probably don't feel the same, but just go on one date with me. I promise I will leave you alone after this."
"Fine. When?"
"Tonight?"
"Sure. Pick me up at 10."
I walked out, and screamed quietly to myself. It was finally happening. Why doesn't it feel like I thought it would?
Mr. Wright came to my door, and knocked. I answered, wearing a new tight dress. He smiled.
"You look beautiful."
"Thanks. You don't look so bad yourself."
We got into the back of his limo, and headed to dinner. He picked the nicest restaurant in town, and we both had the chef's choice. We talked, but I didn't know much about him. What does he like? What doesn't he like? What's his favorite color?
"So I was always really interested in owning my own business."
"I'm glad you knew what you wanted. I still don't."
"Well I think you could do whatever you put your mind to."
"Thanks."
After the date, he walked me home. When we got to my door, he asked if I wanted to go out again.
"I had a really nice time tonight, Mr. Wright."

"So did I. Would you like to do this again sometime?"
"Mr. Wright, you're a really nice man, but I don't think we'd make a good couple."
"I'm sorry?"
"I thought you were what I wanted. I wished you would see that you really loved me, but now that you have, it's not what I want. I'm sorry, but I love someone else. The only person for me."
"I understand. As long as you're happy."
"You should call Lily. She still really likes you. Give it another try. She's a really nice person."
"Thanks, Olivia."
"By the way, I quit."
"What?"
"I don't think us working together would be appropriate. I wanna move down south and start over."
"I'm going to miss you."
"I'll miss you too. You'll have to call."
I went inside, and took a deep breath. I really just did that. I quit the best job I've ever had, and turned down the most successful guy in about 30 seconds. I had to call Tri.
"Tri! I just went on a date with Mr. Wright, but I realized I love Bill so I turned him down and quit. I also told him I was moving down south, and I'm considering it."
"Hello to you too. Breathe. I think that's a good idea, but I'm gonna miss you so much. Before you start packing, talk to Bill."
"Good idea. I'll call him now. Thanks. How's everything with you?"
"It's okay. Nikko and I are supposed to be planning our wedding, but he never wants to talk about it. I'm getting sick of his shit."
"Oh god. Don't kill him."
"No promises. Go call Bill. I'll complain later."
I called Bill, and he picked up on the last ring.
"Hello?"
"Bill! I need to talk to you. Listen, I know this might not mean much and it's pretty late, but I'm in love with you. Only you. It took me forever to realize it, but that guy isn't you."
"Oh?"
"I went on a date with him, and I was thinking about you the whole time. I also quit my job tonight."
"You did what?"
"I was kinda thinking of moving down south to start over."
"Wow. Yet, you still told me about your feelings."
"I know you don't want me back, but I couldn't stay quiet."
"Well you're wrong. You can move down south, but I'm coming with you. I love you too."
"Really?"
"Yes. I'll email Mr. Wright now."
"This is so exciting."
"It is. So now I have to ask you, are we back together?"
"Yes!"
"Good. Now tell me who this other guy was."
"You have to promise not to get mad cause we weren't together."
"Okay. Who?"
"Mr. Wright."
"What? That's a little different. I kinda suspected that."
"Really?"
"Yeah. It doesn't matter though. He could have all the cars, money, fame, and power, but I got the girl."
"Yes you do. Now we have to look at houses."
"Yes. Maybe you could come over?"
"I'll be there in 10. I love you."
"I love you too."

Book 1 HomeLessBook 2 ReckLessBook 3 SenseLessBeing homeless isn't the end of the world. At least, that's what Zachary thought when he found himself on the streets after being kicked out at seventeen. It hadn't been his fault. His father had used him as a scapegoat and won his mother over, thinking that her husband was telling the truth about his cheating and that Zachary was the one who was bringing women over, trying to ruin their marriage. He'd argued his side, but once his mother decided on something, her mind would not be changed. That's how he came to live in the alley near the end of 73rd street between the old bakery and a laundromat. It wasn't anything special, but after three years he'd managed to spruce up the place and make it almost-bearable to live in. Over the years he'd made friends with random people he often passed on the streets and did manage to hold down a few random jobs, but like everything else, they came, then went. Now he was left with fifteen dollars and twenty-two cents, a torn blanket, one outfit, and a dream for a better life. He just didn't know that he'd find it somewhere he'd never thought to look... or with someone he never knew he'd want.
