《Mrs. All-American》Chapter 2: Nurse

“Wh…where am I?” I asked groggily, sitting up in an unfamiliar bed.

“You’ve been awake the whole time,” Katie pointed out. “You need to stop faking amnesia for atten—”

I shot into a sitting position. “I WISH THAT I COULD WAKE UP WITH AMNESIA—”

A woman in nurse’s clothes threw open the door to the room. I wondered why she was wearing nurse’s clothes. Maybe she was a nurse. Her hair was reddish-brown, like a sunset that was also brown. “Is someone singing ‘Amnesia’ by 5 Seconds of Summer?”

“T’was I!” I shouted, proud of my flawless grammar and the use of an old-timey word. “Do you know that song?”

“Never heard of it.” I noticed that the nurse-like being had brown eyes, like the brown that’s usually not in a sunset but would be if a sunset was actually the exact color of her hair.

“Are you her nurse?” Katie asked.

“Sure!” she exclaimed. “My name is Amanda. But you can call me Amanda.”

“Isn’t it kind of weird to be calling your nurse by their first name?” Katie asked.

“Nah. It says in these records that you’re nineteen, Kayla. So you’re older than me anyway!”

“Oh, okay!” I said, smiling.

Amanda opened the door and then walked through the door and then shut the door behind her until the door came to a full close.

“Where did Luke go?” I asked Katie. “I want to see him in color!”

“You’re seeing in colors again?”

My brain clouds cleared up. I noticed Amanda’s hair and eye colors. “Yes! Yes I am!”

Katie jumped and spun in a circle. “Let’s just make sure: did you see Amanda’s eyes as the brown that’s usually not in a sunset but would be if a sunset was—”

“Actually the exact color of her hair!” I finished with her. I loved Katie. She totally got me.

Luke barged into the room, and I remembered that I had asked about him in the first place. “Man, this place is awesome!” he exclaimed. “What is it?”

“A hospital?” Katie said.

“Oh, hush, you!” Luke said calmly. “So, Kayla, are you seeing in color again?”

I stared at his hair; so blond, so devastatingly blond that I couldn’t help but imagine a beautiful banana cream pie resting directly on his cranium. “You have no idea,” I moaned.

Amanda came running in. “Oh. My. God. Are you Luke Hemmings?”

He stuck his hands into his pockets. “Yes, ma’am. Are you a fan?”

“I’ve never heard of you.”

Luke’s face turned into a sad puppy’s. Literally. “Oh.”

Amanda left again, allowing her sunset-brown hair to whip behind her and get caught in the closed door for a second. But then she eventually did leave. Don’t worry, I ain’t no liar.

Katie smized at Luke. “Can you go stand out in the hall for a moment?”

“Of course, m’lady.” He exited the room.

“Why did you make Luke leave?” I asked with sadliness in my voice.

“I don’t trust that Amanda girl.”

“Why not?”

“Didn’t you hear her talking? She’s not Australian.”

“Why would she be Australian?” I asked askingly.

“Um, because we’re in Australia?”

My blood turned into lava, or something else that happens to be hot and fluid. Like hot chocolate. Yeah, I like that. My blood turned to hot chocolate. “Gosh, Katie, why are you so prejudiced against an eighteen-or-less-year-old American girl who happens to be my nurse in Australia? Wow. Hashtag so much hate.”

“No, Kayla, you don’t get it,” she said, seriously in a serious tone. “You don’t get what she could be trying to be.”

I stared at Katie for a few moments, until finally, I realized what she was talking about.

Nurse Amanda was trying to be Mrs. All-American.
