《Day Care》25

I opened my eyes and stared at the bars in front of me. I felt like I was back home in my crib. Not at school.

I hated that I had to switch classes. Everything was fine in my old class. I liked sleeping on a cot and coloring and being able to feel normal. Everything was so different in my new class and I didn't have someone with knowledge of the place to talk to. I missed Alex, even as infuriating as he was.

I sat up, putting my back against the flat surface of the side. As I did so, my diaper squished under me, reminding me of what I did during my nap.

Thankfully, mom was there and would change me so I didn't have to go home with a dirty diaper on.

She walked over to my crib and lowered the side for me to get out. "Hi, sweetie. How did your day go?"

I slid on the floor and grabbed mom's arm to steady me. "It was fine. I made a new friend already."

I wasn't sure if I'd call Blair a friend but we got along and she played with me after breakfast a good bit. She was more of a friend than anyone in my previous class. Except for Alex.

She smiled at me. "That's great. I'm happy for you, Lyla."

I rolled my eyes. I stopped as mom grabbed my shoes from my cubbie. "Mom, I need changed."

She walked over to me and lifted the back of my dress. She pulled my diaper away and a cold breeze of air hit my skin. "You do need changed." She patted my butt and I jerked away from her. She knew what she was doing and I didn't like it one bit.

I followed her into the bathroom and let her change me, glad to be in a clean diaper. I didn't like wearing them at all but if I had to, I preferred a clean one. One that didn't make me feel gross and disgusting.

Mrs. Stacey stopped mom as we were headed back to my cubbie. I ignored both of them and continue to get my things, sitting down on the floor to put my shoes on.

I unlaced my right shoe and was pushing the tongue back when Mr. Eric knelt down in front of me and took it from my hands.

I sighed and glared at him. "I know how to put my shoes on."

"I'm sure you do, Lyla. But you'll hurt yourself if you put them on the wrong feet."

I glanced at my feet and sure enough, my left foot was pulled up, waiting for my shoe. I hadn't even realized I'd done it until he pointed it out.

He slid my shoe on my right foot and tied it for me. Then he did the same to my left. "That's better. Let's get your coat on."

I didn't want his help but I knew there was no point in arguing. I stood and let him help me with my coat. He even zipped it up for me.

"Wait here until your mommy is done talking."

I glared at him as he walked away. I hated being told what to do.

Mom said goodbye to Mrs. Stacey then walked over to me. "All ready?"

I nodded. I followed her to the door and quickly ducked around her to get out of the classroom. I was more than ready to be home where I could relax.

"Lyla, what is your rush? I thought you had a good day." She grabbed my hand, not letting me get far.

"I just want to go home."

"It's too cold to play outside."

"Even with a jacket on?"

"Yes, even with a jacket on."

I groaned. Baby toys were interesting to me in the slightest. Without being able to go outside, I found myself becoming extra bored.

Mom pushed the door opened and we stepped outside. It was cooler than it had been and the breeze was making it cold but I was fine with my coat on. "We'll find something to do tonight."

I followed her to the car and waited as she opened the door and put my diaper bag on the seat. Then she helped me get into my car seat, strapping me in as she always did.

I always hated that my feet dangled when I was in my car seat. I couldn't move at all in the car and not being able to touch the floor just made things worse. Not to mention that the door was locked from the inside.

Mom lingered rather than just shutting the door right away. She cupped my cheek and brushed her thumb across my skin. "Don't be so sad, Ly. Just because we can't go outside, that doesn't mean we can't still have fun."

I wanted to pull away from her but I couldn't move away from her. The straps were pinning me in place, forcing me to deal with mom's affection.

She smiled when she saw me cringing and patted my arm before shutting the door.
