《BOOT STRAPS》Life Is a Mist

Death. Death is never satisfied, it's always taking people into it's dark bottomless pit.
Life is just like a mist,it appears for just a day and disappears tomorrow.A person we could see, feel and touch today would cease to exist tomorrow replacing all that we are with tears and sorrow.
This is the reality of life and it's so sad to see it happen to Mr Orchard. It was the day of the burial ceremony, a small group of people probably relatives and close friends alongside Drake, Becky and I were present.
I guess Sarah didn't want to draw too much attention to her husband's burial because it was a small gathering and a quiet ceremony.
We all gathered around the coffin where Mr Orchard's lifeless body laid, the coffin was closed and there was a portrait that was put on a stand close to the coffin.
I guess that was the portrait Jason was painting the day we came visiting. Everyone's face was gloomy as they all looked down.
Drake knew it would be hard for me to attend this funeral while Becky linked her hands with mine. I was doing okay because I haven't shed a tear since the ceremony started.
Drake had his arms around my shoulders, sometimes he would clench my shoulders softly or he would rub them back and forth to ease the pain I felt.
Sarah and Jason were standing beside us. Sarah once sparkling eyes were now dull and glassy due to the tears that rolled down her cheeks.
Jason pacified her as he wiped her tears with a face towel. I took one of her hands and squeezed it gently.
"Skai, please take hold of my mom." He said as he ushered Sarah towards me, immediately I took hold of her as he walked towards the small platform that was stationed before the us.
"I'd like to say something before he is buried." Jason said as he removed his arms from his mother's body.
"I couldn't just watch them bury my father without saying the things that I've struggled to say to him while he was alive. I know he's dead and he won't be able to hear what I have to say but I feel I should just say it anyway." He held his head high as he spoke and the people rose their heads up to listen to what he had to say.
"My father was a selfless man, whenever he heard people's problems he always taught of how he could help solve their problems. I am a living example of one of the countless people he has helped." He looked down at his shoes probably to hide the tears that were finding it's way into his eyes.
"I was his only child,he waited for so long to have a child who he could wholeheartedly love and give everything he had. He finally had a child,in fact a son but what kind of son can't read or get at least an average GP in school... I felt useless that I was letting everyone down most especially my dad." This time the tears were now flowing freely but he still had his face straight and calm as he spoke.
"My dad never regarded me as useless or dumb. He always told me I was special in my own way, that it's not necessary for me to understand things the way people did. He showered me with love, care and affection, never did he feel bad that his only child was dyslexic. Even when he found out I wouldn't be able to take over the company, he didn't change towards me. I can vow that the percentage of dads in the world who could do that are not up to 5% and I'm proud to say my dad is among them..." He paused as he took a glimpse at the coffin that was beside him and be walked towards the portrait and took it off from the stand.

"If anyone asks me what a real father is, I'd show them this portrait of my dad and tell them this is the best father one could ask for. Everyday I see him and spend time with him, the more I love my mom because she made the best choice for a husband. Mom,I love you so much for the dad that you gave to me." He walked to towards where I stood with Sarah in my arms.
Sarah left my arms immediately Jason reached where we stood, she cupped his face and looked straight into his eyes.
"You're the best son your dad and I could ever have." She said in a low tone that only Jason and those around us could hear.

I looked around the cemetery that was filled with the several graves including the one that was added today. Mr Orchard's coffin has been hurled into the ground and buried with the damp grains of sand.
Drake was talking with some other people that seemed to be his business partners that came for the ceremony while Sarah and Jason were surrounded with sympathetic faces who gave them comforting hugs before leaving.
"Sis,I have to go now. I am not feeling too well."Becky who was beside winced as held her head in her palms.
"What happened ?" I looked at her with worry as I rested my hand on her neck to feel her temperature and she felt really hot.
"Since last night,I've been feeling a little feverish,I would have gone to the hospital today but I couldn't miss the burial." She explained as she took out her phone from her purse.
"Oh sorry about that. The ceremony is over so go get yourself treated." I told her as she dialed a number on her phone.
"Yeah, sure I'd tell my doctor to come home."She gave me a side hug before she walked away as she spoke into her phone.
I looked away from her and focused my attention on the scenery of what was going on around me then I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned my head around to see the familiar face and my nose didn't fail to take in the familiar scent.
"Hello beautiful." Mike greeted me as I looked at him with a surprised look,I didn't know he was present at the burial.
"Mike, what a surprise. I didn't think you would come for the burial." I said as I finally washed away the surprise from my face.
"I worked with him for a while and Becky informed me so I decided to pay my tributes." He shrugged as he tucked one of his hands into his pockets while I nodded at him.
"Won't you give me a hug ?!" I thought twice about his request because Drake was close by and I wouldn't want drama occuring in Mr Orchard's burial ceremony.
"Oh it's because of him." He tilted his head towards where Drake was standing.
"Yeah,I just don't want conflicts." I pursed my lips as I linked my arms under my bosom.
"It's fine, I wouldn't want that too." He smirked at me as he pat me on the shoulder.
"Yeah thanks." I smiled briefly as I tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
"You know we have unfinished business, right ?" My face straightened at what he said because I've forgotten about his proposal and now that I'm with Drake the answer is definitely not in his favour.

"Uhm yeah, but we can't talk about that in here." I told him as I looked around the cemetery.
"Of course, what about we have dinner." I nodded at his suggestion as I smiled at him.
"Good, I'd come pick you up." He had a cute grin on his face which faded slowly as soon as he saw my facial expression. I had a scowl on my face knowing that was a bad idea because Drake would be mad.
I needed to have this conversation with Mike once and for all and let him him know where he stands in my life and I can't do that successfully with Drake throwing fists at him.
"Uhm how about I come meet you." He nodded at me with a smile on his face because he knew why I didn't want him to come to the house.
"Sure I'd send you the location, I gotta go now your bodyguard is coming to throw another fist in my face." I turned around to look at Drake who was pacing towards where we stood.
"Skai, I think we should get going." Drake said as he took my arms to take me away from where Mike stood.
"Bye beautiful." Mike waved at us as we turned out backs to walk away, Drake clenched his teeth and tightened his grip on my hands.
We said goodbye to Sarah and Jason and the others who were engaged in conversations with them before leaving the cemetery.

I was laying on my bed as I reminisced the events that happened at the burial,I didn't change into new clothes because I'd be going out later with Mike.
The notification sound of my phone disturbed the peaceful silence of my room, I groaned as I reached out for it on the bedside table.
It was a text from Mike who sent the address of where we'd be meeting, I was reading it when a call came in,I looked at the caller ID and it turned out to be none other than the ever joyous Sekani.
"Skaiiii !" He shouted my name as he stretched it which made me put the phone away from my ears.
"Are you high on something ?" I chuckled as I brought the phone back to my ears.
"Yes, I'm high on good news." I raised my brows at the thought of what Sekani had to say.
"Oh really ?! Spill!" I said as I sat up on my bed with a wide smile on my face.
"I heard that my sister is now the CEO of the prestigious Orchard's Industries !" My eyes widened at what he said because I haven't told him, yet he got to know about it. I was confused for a while before my mind wandered to my mom.
"Let me guess, mom told you." I rolled my eyes at the realization that mom spilled everything to Sekani.
"Yeah yeah, she doesn't hide things from me like you do." I hit my forehead with my hands realizing I forgot to tell Sekani.
"I'm so so sorry,I had it in mind to tell you but some things came up." I tried to explain to Sekani but I stopped when I heard him whistling behind the phone.
I knew he was turning deaf ears to what I had to say. Anytime he whistled when someone was talking,it meant he was tired of what the person was saying or he's not just interested.
"That's not why I called so don't waste your saliva." I let out an unamused laugh as I rose my brows at what he said.
"Then why are you disturbing me ?, You pest." I teased him as I looked at my door that was being opened by Drake.
"I'm telling you in advance to secure a job for me in your company once I graduate and I also called so I could tell you to send my condolences to your boss's family , now you can hang up." I laughed out loud at at how ridiculous he sounded while Drake smiled at me as he took a seat at the end of my bed.
"You are never serious. " I chuckled as I crawled over to meet Drake.
"Yeah yeah besides how's Drake ?" I smiled as I knelt behind Drake with my hands playing with his hair.
"He's fine, he's been awfully troublesome lately but we'd manage." Drake pinched my arm which made me groan.
"I think that's because he spends so much time with you." My mouth was wide opened as I heard what Sekani said, this boy knows how to dish out comeback lines.
"Okay your time has been exceeded, get out from my phone." I said as I hung up on him, I didn't let him say anything because he was going to say worse than he had said.
I tossed the phone on my bed as I wrapped my hands around Drake from behind, I tightened my grip around his neck to make him uncomfortable.
"Are you trying to kill me ?!" He tried to remove my arms but I resisted.
"Yeah it's part of your punishment for what happened earlier." I chuckled as I rested my chin on his head.
"Really ?! You're my girl now and I'd not want anyone looking at you with those lovey dovey eyes, only I get to that so let go off me else I'd do it myself." I increased my grip on his neck and rested my head on his shoulder.
"What are you going to do about it ?" I whispered into his ears as I bit my lower lip.
He gave me a sinister smile as he shook his head at me. He gripped my arms firmly and the pain made me loosen my grip on him which gave him the advantage to remove my arms from his neck.
"Now time for payback." He said as he got up from where he sat and carried me on his shoulder. He twirled me in circles and his pointy shoulder was poking my guts which made me uncomfortable.
"Put me down !" I yelped as I repeatedly slapped his back which felt like tickles to him because he was laughing hysterically.
"Okay if you say so." Before I knew what was going on,he threw me carelessly on the bed.
"Drake !" I shouted as I tried to regain my balance.
"Yes my love." He chuckled as he slumped by my side on the bed.
"Why do you always have to be mischievous ?" I winced as I massaged my abdomen that was hurting a little.
"You wanted the real Drake so here I am." He winked at me as he tapped my legs.
"Yeah my bad." I rolled my eyes at him as I supported myself on the bed with my arms behind me.
"Why are you still dressed ?" He asked me as he rested in his side with his attention on my black vintage gown.
"Because I have plans this afternoon." I said as I got up from the bed and walked towards the dresser.
"What plans ?" He sat up on the bed, looking at me through the mirror that reflected my face as I looked into it.
"To see Becky, she's sick. I need to check up on her." I lied,I knew Drake won't let me see Mike even if it was to inform him I was already taken.
"Oh that's bad, you should really go see her." Guilt filled my mind as I applied a new layer of lip gloss on my lips while Drake walked over to where I stood.
He wrapped his arms around my torso and stared at our reflection in the mirror.
"That's why I love you, you're always caring and thoughtful." He pecked my cheek before putting a strand of my hair away from my face.
"Well you got yourself a priceless gem." I chuckled as I wrapped my arms around his grip on my torso.
"Yeah,I know it's too early to talk about this but I'd really like this relationship to be permanent." I turned around to look into his face while he smiled widely at me.
"Permanent as in marriage ?" I had my lips parted with furrowed brows,it was just four days since we started dating, we can't start talking about marriage, it's way too early.
"Yes but I'm not implying we should get married anytime soon, all I'm saying is you're the girl I want to spend my life with." A broad smile curled up on my face and he returned the gesture.
This just makes me want to rush to Mike and tell him that I'm head over heels for another person and he should piss off, I really appreciate this relationship and I wouldn't want anything to serve as a threat.
