《STRAWBERRY WINE -corpse husband-》ONE STEP FURTHER (24)

Madison stayed in her room, staring at the ceiling while laying on the floor. Corpse hadn't come to talk to her at all and they had finished the stream nearly two hours ago. Silent tears continued to run down her cheeks.
She was convinced of a multitude of things: Corpse hated her, he wanted to break up with her, he hadn't come to see her because he was packing up his things and leaving.
And so much more.
Anxiety was a bitch sometimes.
She ignored her phone buzzing next to her, assuming it was her friends asking if she was alright or her fans spamming her twitter, wanting answers she wasn't able to give.
She heard the front door open, then close, and assumed Corpse had finally given up on her and left. After she picked herself up off the floor, she came out to the living room. Corpse's small set up was still sitting on the dining room table, and Corpse was in the kitchen.
"Baby?" he turned to her, a knife in one hand. With the movement of his body, she saw him in front of a cutting board full of vegetables. Noticing her swollen eyes, he frowned, setting the knife down. "Bubs? What's wrong, baby?" He said, concern in his voice. He went to her, wrapping his arms around her tightly. She sobbed into his chest, her pent up emotions coming out.
"Baby... baby, what happened?"
Corpse continued to rub her back and stroke her hair, trying to calm her down.
Madison couldn't calm down, even though she knew it was going to be okay.
Eventually they sat on the floor, Madison still in his arms quietly crying.
"Baby... I can't help you if I don't know what's going on.."
Madison buried her face in his chest, not speaking. "Maddie, love, I need to finish your soup."
"You made me soup?" Maddie questioned quietly.
"Yeah, baby.... well, I'm trying to. You said you felt sick."
Madison nodded. "Okay.."
They both stood, Madison sitting at a bar stool, keeping her head against the cool counter. Because of all of the crying she had a headache.
Corpse continued to put the chicken noodle soup together, following a recipe on his phone. He played music softly, sometimes singing along before focusing back on the recipe. Madison liked that he was letting her think things through before smothering her with questions.
Madison convinced herself it was just best to let it go. Brooke was their friend; she had meant nothing by it. The group had a charity stream the following day, and Madison couldn't hold a grudge when she still had to do her job.

Although Corpse knew something more was wrong, he ignored it. If Madison wanted to talk to him, she would.

"Sooooo, Miss Blair," Karl said with a tone.
"Yeah, Karl, what's up?" Madison replied while finishing the jewel task in the laboratory on the Mira map.
They were playing Among Us, and had been playing for a long time. Madison was tired, but enjoying herself. Because of the proximity chat feature, it really just felt like they were all hanging out.
"What are you doing this weekend?" Karl asked. Madison could hear the nervousness of his tone, laughing softly at him.
"Hanging out at home, Karl, what are you doing this weekend?"
"Going to San Diego to stay with you, if you let me!"
Madison laughed at him, leaving him in the reactor area before heading through decontamination. As she went in, Corpse came out.
She heard Karl greet Corpse before she continued on with her tasks.
They went through a few rounds, not knowing who the last imposter was, leaving Karl, Madison, and Corpse in a final three.
The group had been sus of Karl the whole game, but if he was the imposter why hadn't he killed her in lab when they were alone?
"Maddie, listen..." Karl began. "When we were on our date in Lab-"
"A date?" Corpse was nearly growling.
"Yes, Corpse, keep up. We were alone! And I didn't kill you! Corpse has been near all of the kills the whole game! You have to vote Corpse."
She laughed at him as he spoke. "But Karl..." she whined.
"Just vote Karl, Madison," Corpse encouraged, voice deeper than normal, and tone cold.
"But what if I'm wrong..." Madison was incredibly stressed. She didn't want to lose this for everyone.
She voted for Karl.
"Nooooo, my baby voted me out," Karl whined. Everyone in the lobby laughed at him as the victory screen showed for the crewmates.
Everyone laughed but Corpse.
They continued to play more games, Karl milking the joke of him and Madison flirting and dating. She went along with it for the content. Everyone else made comments about it too, encouraging the two to stick together as protection, going as far as having a fake wedding in the greenhouse.
It was the last game of the night when Madison got an imposter round with Corpse.
They played well the entire game, neither of them being voted out by the time there were five people left alive.
Karl had been the body that was reported.
"Uh... Madison?" Poki questioned.
"Yeah?"
"Where are you?"

"I'm doing my plants at the moment."
"Huh....Karl was dead in Admin."
Everyone started saying to vote her out.
"Wait, wait. First of all, there's a vent in there.... if I killed Karl, why would I stay in the room right next to the body instead of using the vent? AND, it's Karl, I wouldn't kill Karl..."
"Yeah... because he's your space husband," Toast commented.
Everyone laughed, except Corpse, who tried to divert attention by saying it was a self report by Poki.
They ended up winning the round after everyone voted out Poki.
—
Corpse was giving her the silent treatment, and it was incredibly annoying. They were having leftover soup and salad for dinner, sitting in silence. It was awkward, and Madison was over it.
"Corpse?"
Corpse looked up at her but didn't say anything.
"Are you just not going to talk to me?" Madison said, annoyance evident in her tone.
"If you want to talk, go talk to Karl." Corpse said harshly, standing up and leaving Madison at the table alone.
"Are you being serious?" Madison asked, her getting louder than she thought she would.
Corpse turned, staring into her eyes. "Yup," he said, going into her room and slamming the door.
Madison took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. She could communicate with him. She knew he was just jealous. He wasn't actually mad.
She gave him a few minutes alone while she cleaned the kitchen before going to her bedroom. Corpse had airpods in his ears, eyes closed, and head bobbing to the loud music Madison could hear from where she stood at the door.
She sat on the bed next to him, not saying anything, just waiting for him to talk to her.
She heard the music stop and him shuffle after awhile.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, both nearly fuming.
Although Madison had convinced herself she would let all of the drama go, she couldn't now. As she sat there thinking about what Corpse said about Karl, she couldn't stop thinking about yesterday with Brooke. The double standard pissed her off.
But she was mature enough to understand that this had nothing to do with Brooke or Karl. This was because of Corpse and her. They had made these decisions.
"You don't care that people don't know we're dating?" She asked softly, but tone hard.
Corpse glanced up at her before keeping his head down. "Is that why you were upset yesterday? Because people don't know?"
"I asked you a question first."
He sighed, "Madison... of course it bothers me that people don't know. I get frustrated when people flirt with you, or when they say sexual things they shouldn't. I almost fucking lost it on Karl today! But I... you don't realize how much people hate me. It's the thing to do right now; leave hate on my shit. I don't want to post with you or about you because I never want you to get hurt the way I do. Now you answer my question."
Madison felt bad then, for anticipating he was doing it to hurt her. She hated her brain sometimes. "I.." she considered lying to him for a brief moment. She didn't want to ruin his friendships; in reality, she had no control over him or his decisions. She decided against it though, remembering what happened last time they hadn't communicated properly.
"I didn't like when you were flirting with Brooke," she spat out, feeling stupid and immature for letting something so small bother her. "And then when she kept making you laugh, and you were.... well, you were just being you, and it's no ones fault because when you were just being a good friend I was overthinking and I don't know.... it would be nice to have people know. But I understand why we can't..."
Madison didn't want to look at him and see disappointment. She kept her eyes on her hands, fidgeting with the rings on her fingers.
"Maddie, I would never ever think about anyone other than you. Look at me."
She looked at him, his eyes looking harshly at hers. "I love you and only you. I've never even been able to say anything like that to anyone, so never think I would ever leave you, do you understand?"
Madison nodded. "But Corpse, you can't be mad at Karl or anyone else not knowing when neither of us have told them," Madison retaliated. "And you can't get mad at me for playing it off like it's normal, when that's exactly what you did yesterday!"
"Baby girl..." Corpse grabbed her hand, holding it in his before using it to pull her into his chest. "You tell them whatever you want."
