《The Calamity Girls (Book 1)》The Big Bugball Game

Today was Harvest Day in Wartwood, probably their version of Thanksgiving."Ah, harvest day, my favorite holiday." Sprig said. "I'm hungry just thinking about it." Polly added. "I get it, frog Thanksgiving." Anne replied. "You even have a turkey." I added, even though the turkey was a bug. "Who am I kidding, we'll both eat it, Harvest Day, we're all in!" "Hey girls, how about you put these turnips all in our display?" Hop Pop asked. "Alright, alright." Anne agreed when we saw a banner that said Go Farmers on it. "Go Farmers, what's that all about?" "The big bugball game, of course." Sprig replied. "Every year, Wartwood plays a friendly game of bugball, Farmers, that's us, versus the townies." Hop Pop explains. "And every year, the townies destroy us." Polly complained. "It's humiliating!" "And to top it off, the losers have to wear these ridiculous costumes for a whole week." Sprig added, showing a picture of a frog in a turkey costume. "Those outfits are so itchy." Hop Pop whined. Anne and I were shooting turnips into baskets. The farmers were shocked by our athletic experience. "Anne, Rowena, where'd you learn to shoot like that?" "Learn, I don't know if you've noticed, but the both of us have natural athletic abilities." I replied. "You two would be perfect for bugball!" Hop Pop exclaimed. "If you both joined our team, we might actually win." Sprig added. "Win, not in a million years." Mayor Toadstool joked as he introduced his team. "Be careful you farmers don't soil yourselves on the field." "Sorry, Mayor, but farmers are gonna win this year, because they have us." Anne explains. "We're gonna beat you and your fancy townie team." I added. "Well I'll certainly enjoy watching you try." Mayor Toadstool said as he and his team left.

The farmers were gonna teach us how to play the game. "Welcome to Team Farmers." Sprig said. "This is the playing field." "Those skulls are the goals." Mrs Croaker explains. "And this is the bugball." Hop Pop added, showing us that it was an actual bug. "So, we just put the bug in the goal, right?" Anne asked. "Seems pretty simple." "Oh, there's more to it than that." Hop Pop explains as he grabbed out a rule book. "Now, you've got your shooters, that's you and Rowena, and you got your passers, me and Chuck." "I grow tulips." Chuck said. "Good to know." I responded. "And lastly, on defense, there's Sprig, because he's not really great at the shooting part." Hop Pop continued. "Never scored a point in his life." "That's because you never give me a chance!" Sprig retorted. "Anyways, it says here that the most important thing about bugball is teamwork." Hop Pop explains. "Rowena and I can do all the scoring." Anne said. "I don't know, you guys are good, but the townies are hardcore." Mrs Croaker warned. "Yeah, guys, I think the team should really..." Sprig was interrupted by me. "Neither of us usually do team sports, I play golf, and Anne plays tennis." "You guys wanna win, right?" Anne asked. The team nodded. "Well, then, trust us, we got this." All of a sudden, the townies came to the field. "Beat it, farmers, we're here to practice!" Mayor Toadstool ordered. "Hey, farmers have the field for another hour!" Polly argued. "Oh yeah, well, our schedule says different." Mayor Toadstool replied as Toadie ripped up the schedule. "Unless, you'd like to scrimmage against us." "I think we need a little more practice before..." Hop Pop was interrupted by Anne. "You're on!" The farmers gasped.

We got set up for a practice game on the field. Anne had the ball most of the time, which resulted in the townies scoring more points. The townies laughed at us and bragged about how they don't need practice. "This is why I hate team sports." Anne sighed. "I'm always outnumbered. "Outnumbered?" Sprig asked. "Look around you, Anne, you have an entire team to back you up." "Anne, remember this saying, there's no I in team." I added. "You're not the only one who can shoot." Mrs Croaker said. "I grow tulips." Chuck repeated. "In tennis, if I'm losing, I just play harder." Anne explains. "But this is different, I don't know how to win this." "It's new to me too." I added. "Not you, guys, we." Sprig said. "The only way we win is to work as a team." Hop Pop explains. "I'm in." I responded. "I guess I'll give it a shot." Anne groaned.

We did a training montage for a while. But it was time for the big game. Wally, who was the referee called us onto the field. The townies were all blocking Anne because of the practice game, but she passed the ball to Hop Pop. Surprisingly, I scored most of the points.

The final minute of the game has arrived. But when Anne passed the ball to me, Toadie hurt my leg with a special powder. "Toadie, you're disqualified." Wally said as Toadie got off the field. "Rowena, are you okay?" Anne asked. "Do you want me to help you to the bench?" I was nervous. "Who's Rowena?" I stuttered as Anne helped me up. "Oh, wow, sports."

I sat on the bench for the rest of the game. For some odd reason, Anne decided to try one of the techniques where she put on a blindfold and listened to the other teammates. Anne missed her shot, but, luckily, Sprig won it all. The crowd cheered for not only the farmers, but for Sprig. "Dude, your first goal, how does it feel?" Anne asked. "Amazing." Sprig replied. "I feel like a living god!"
