《The Calamity Girls (Book 1)》Prologue

It was a pretty normal day at school, our school did another frog dissection. My lab table was right across from Anne and Sasha. The teacher had just finished giving us directions when the whole class heard Sasha sarcastically gagging. Other than Anne, I was the only one who didn't buy Sasha's sarcasm. "Oh dear, Anne, why don't you take Sasha to the sick room before she desecrates these beautiful frog bodies with her vomit, thank you." Said our teacher. Shortly after they left, I raised my hand. "Could I go use the restroom?" I lied. "I don't see why not, Rowena." She replied.

I ran into the restroom, when I overheard Sasha talking to Anne. She may not be my best friend anymore, but I don't trust Sasha and I don't want her to get hurt. "Yo, Sash, sick room's over here!" Anne called out to Sasha. She scoffs and rolls her eyes. "Forget the sick room, forget school, let's get outta here and celebrate your birthday in style." "Skip school?" Anne asked. "I don't know Sash." "Anne, this is your 13th birthday, you only get one of these, so let's make it the best birthday in the history of birthdays!" She replied. "Well, alright." Anne said nervously. "I gotta be home by 6:00 though, my parents are throwing a big party and they really want me to be there." "Right right, now let's get this thing started!" Sasha celebrates, not even listening to Anne. I walked out of the bathroom and headed back to class for the dissection.

After school, I would usually walk home from school with my friend, Marci, who also hangs out with Anne and Sasha, but she wanted to go shopping for Anne's gift. Anne's birthday, a day I wish I could forget. Me and her used to be best friends until Sasha pushed me out of the picture. I walked into my house to see my older sister, Rosalina, fixing up a snack. She is basically a mother figure of mine since our Dad was always working and Mom has been gone for 6 years. "Hey, Rowena, how was your day?" She asked. "Fine, but Rosa, have you ever had a friend who has grown apart from you but you still care about them?" I asked. "No." Rosalina replied with a nod. "You thinking about Anne?" "How'd you know?" I asked in astonishment. "One, I'm your older sister and I know everything, and two, you and Anne have been growing apart." She said. "You remember Sasha?" I asked Rosalina as she nodded. "She's basically the most popular girl in school now." "I never knew what happened between you guys." She said. "Basically Sasha told me that I was ugly and that nobody deserves to be my friend." I explained as she tucked my dirty blonde hair behind my ears and hugged me. "I'm so sorry." She said. "It's fine," I pouted as I walked to the door. "I'm just gonna go for a walk."

I walked into Money Coffee, the most popular cafe in town. I ordered my usual, a hot chocolate and a double chocolate muffin. I'm not surprised that I see Anne and Sasha with Unicorn Frappuccinos in their hands. "So, that's what a unicorn tastes like," Anne said. "Corn syrup." She picked up her phone and started freaking out. "Oh shoot, it's almost 6:00, I gotta go dude!" "Family party, right, lame." Sasha groaned. "Lemme guess, a clown with balloon animals?" Anne blushed in embarrassment. "I know it's not the coolest, but this is important to them." "Oh my gosh, Marci said she found the perfect gift for you downtown, a frog music box for the frog lover!" Sasha said, showing her phone to Anne. "I wonder if those gems are real? C'mon, let's keep this party train rolling, choo choo!" "Sorry dude, you don't understand, I really gotta go." Anne said. "Oh, I understand, Anne, you're a good little girl who's gotta go home to her mommy and daddy, come on, hang out with your friends that love you." Sasha retorted. "Sasha, I'd really love to, but..." "Anne this isn't cute anymore," Sasha snapped. "We are meeting up with Marci RIGHT NOW, End, of, discussion." Anne was frightened by Sasha's devilish look. "I guess it's okay if I'm a little late." She said nervously. "Boom, I knew you'd change your mind." Sasha cheered. What a horrible person. I finished my hot chocolate and left the cafe.

I decided to follow them downtown to see what Sasha was planning. I hid behind a few bushes at a nearby park. I saw Marci waiting for Anne and Sasha at a thrift store. "Hey girls." Marci said. "The music box is in there, but it costs $500." "We can all chip in." Anne suggested. "Or Anne could steal it!" Sasha said. Anne gasped. Marci was quiet. I didn't hear anything they said after that except for Sasha saying, "End, of, discussion!" Anne went into the thrift store and stole the music box. The three girls went to the park I was at and sat at a nearby bench. Anne opened the box and a big flash of light shone on the girls. I tried to get a closer look, but when I did, everything went black.
