《ex | changlix》97

ever since the first night of felix's mother coming to korea, changbin had been spending the night at felix's place.
felix hated being left alone with his mother and it was easy to see why. felix and his mom hardly spoke, it seemed like they were two strangers who lived in the same house.
it was getting to the point though that changbin's parents were starting to want him to return home. felix understood this, but he really hated the idea of being alone with his mother.
luckily for him, at school that week, the boys unanimously agreed they all should hangout and finally have a time where no fighting would be involved. instead, everyone just needed to talk their shit out.
minho was the one who ultimately decided it, so he offered up his house as their destination to possibly destroy if a fight did break out. it would be another one of the groups "epic" sleepovers... they just hoped this one would not end in disaster.
"where are you going?" felixs mother asked as she watched her son fly in through the front door and scavenge around the house.
"minhos house, i told you i was sleeping there tonight. i just stopped home to get my stuff." felix explained.
"but-"
"mom, i really have to go, changbin is waiting in the car for me!" felix said as he hurried out the door.
"but i was hoping we could talk..." she mumbled, but felix didn't hear her. he was too busy sprinting his way over to changbin's car.
"you okay?" changbin asked as felix quickly got in.
"yeah, just drive." felix said it as if changbin was his getaway driver and someone was chasing them.
"felix you didn't rob a bank, you just left your house. take a second to breathe, okay?" changbin laughed a bit as he spoke, making felix smile.

"right, sorry." felix nodded, "it's just my mom, i just want to leave."
"okay prince, we're leaving, don't worry." changbin said comfortingly as he began to pull away from the curb.
the boys made their way over to minhos house and ended up being the last two to arrive. they made their way inside and greeted the rest of the boys as they then sat down.
"so what are we gonna do?" jisung asked minho cutely as he walked back over after letting changbin and felix inside.
"whatever you want to do, princess." minho winked as he cupped jisungs face.
"wo-wo-woahhh!" jisung fell of the couch and crashed onto the floor, not expecting minho to flirt with him like that in front of everyone.
"so now we know jisung likes to be called princess." jeongin stifled a small laugh as he said this.
"why are you laughing? i call you baby bread." hyunjin interjected, making jisung snort.
"shut it princess." jeongin snapped.
"as you wish, baby bread!" jisung could not contain his laughter.
"what does felix like to be called?" hyunjin redirected the course of conversation.
"i call him bokkie, sometimes prince. i'm not sure though, what do you like, felix?" changbin shrugged.
chan just sat there, hating the way changbin was so nonchalant about it. he just wanted to shout 'sunshine,' but it was not that he realized it didn't matter. chan knew he wasn't changbin, and so the nicknames he uses for felix aren't seen as important.
"i know you want to say something." seungmin whispered from beside chan.
"what?" chan questioned, but was interrupted by felix's response.
"i like bokkie and prince, i don't know. anything from you is good i guess." felix smiled shyly, finding it weird to admit this in front of his friends.

"both are better than baby bread." jisung returned to laughing, making jeongin seethe with anger.
"what about sunshine?" seungmin piped up, "do you like being called sunshine?"
"oh— well chan made that one up..." felix admitted hesitantly.
"i know, it's cute though. you are the friend groups sunshine." seungmin stated, "you make a dark room brighter just by smiling."
"what? me? no way." felix shook his head adamantly.
"yes you are lix, you may have entered a dark time recently, but you are still out sunshine." seungmin said comfortingly.
"i agree, felixs laughter could cure anyone's depression!" jisung stated as he stood up triumphantly.
"no!" felix shook his head.
"come on felix, just accept the title." minho encouraged.
"felix sunshine!" jeongin cheered.
"our little ball of hope." hyunjin added.
"the light at the end of the tunnel." chan smiled.
"sunshine." changbin finally said as he gave felix gentle head pats.
"me? how could i be the sunshine of the group?" felix questioned, his facial expression seeming so dismal.
"because you make all of us happier just by you being here. that's what sunshine does, you light up our lives simply by existing." jisung explained as he ran over and engulfed felix into a hug, "thank you for being here."
felix didn't know why, but jisungs words brought tears to his eyes. he felt the swelling begin as the water brimmed and made it a bit difficult to see.
"th-th-thank you." felix stuttered out as he burried his face into the crook of jisung's neck.
"why did you mention that?" chan whispered to seungmin.
"because... you used to be a great person who knew just what to say to make others feel better. you created the nickname 'sunshine' for felix with the intention of showing him he was more than his sadness... i felt like you could use the reminder of who you used to be." seungmin explained before walking away from chan, knowing that being around the latter would do more harm than good.
"thank you, chan." changbin walked over to the boy so felix wouldn't hear him.
"why are you thanking me?"
"seungmin was right just now... i may have overheard... you did make felix happy once. i may get jealous over it and it may hurt to see him smile so much with you, but thats my own insecurities shining through.
"i have to trust felix and... even trust you again eventually. i miss the friendship we used to have and im sure you miss being close to felix.
"we have a lot to work on as friends before all the trust can be restored... but i think it would be a good idea to start to fix things.
"i cant hate you forever and you cant ruin yourself over felix not liking you back. we have both made mistakes and need to fix them."
"you think we can really do that? you think we can just move on from all that happened?" chan questioned with uncertainty.
"if we can't then we were never really friends in the first place." changbin shrugged before leaving chan to sit with his thoughts, and all chan could think was, can this really be fixed?

An Unwilling Monster
In the city of Kholakel, the highlight of the year for the upper classes is the annual monster pacification of the misty woods. Ostensibly it's a culling of the monster population to prevent them encroaching on urban areas, but it's an open secret that it's actually treated as more of a blood sport, the participants competing to score the most kills. After all, why else would the politicians and elites of the city bother to attend personally? Given the intense competition and high-tech weapons and gear in use, one might wonder how the forest has not yet been completely depopulated. As this year's culling approaches, a group of unfortunate children are about to discover the answer first-hand, but thanks to an unexpected twist of fate, one of them will score the chance to play the role of the hunter instead of the prey. This was an attempt at writing something darker than my usual fare. The story I actually ended up with isn't as mean to the MC as I'd originally planned out, to the point that I'm not sure the story deserves the horror/grimdark tags anymore, but this is still an unfair world with unambiguously evil antagonists. Chapters are short to start with, but get longer once the first act is over.
