'We almost thought you girls weren't going to show up,' Jade said as Perrie and Leigh-Anne walked into Cafè Gourmand. The girls went there every Friday morning for the Parisian ambience of the small nook of a place, tightly buried between bigger buildings. Lexington Street, a rather petite street compared to the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street and Regent Street, housed the hidden gem, making it lesser known and thus less busy than the bigger chains of coffee shops.

This one was just perfect for them to gossip.

'I texted you guys yesterday and I got no reply from either of you,' Jesy scolded them as she was already sitting next to Jade. She used the coffee mug to warm her hands. Perrie and Leigh-Anne sat at their small table and took their coats off.

'I'm so sorry,' Perrie began, at first contemplating giving a fake excuse, but decided otherwise. 'I met with Blaine to ask him if I could go to his party tomorrow.'

Jade and Jesy both leaned in. 'How did that go?' Jade asked.

'Basically told me he never wants to be seen in public with me,' Perrie confessed. 'He's embarrassed by how I act sometimes and what I like. Was also not impressed with our sleepovers.'

Jesy scoffed. 'I don't care how old we get, if I want a sleepover with my girls, it's happening. That reminds me, Leigh-Anne, yours tomorrow?'

'Absolutely,' she replied. 'We will have a much better time at mine than you would have at Blaine's party, Perrie.' Leigh-Anne put a consolidating hand on her shoulder.

'Yeah, I know we will,' Perrie replied with a half-efforted smile. 'Let's get our drinks before we start hounding each other with our problems.'

It took barely five minutes for Perrie and Leigh-Anne to grab a couple of gingerbread lattes and pain au chocolats. They sat back down in a hurry, desperate to spill everything amongst their tight-knit circle.

'Did you guys know that Gary is gay?' Leigh-Anne asked. The other three girls looked at her mid-drink, unable to reply. Leigh-Anne's mouth dropped. 'Oh my God, how was I the only one to not know?!'

'To be fair, I fancied him when I first laid eyes on him too,' Jesy said with a mouth full of coffee. A drop ran down her chin. 'But I knew he was gay when I saw how nice he was. Seriously, the guys in our school are absolute dicks.'

'I'm going to tell you something my mam never lets me forget,' Jade began, leaning in with a serious look on her face. She then narrowed her eyes. 'I've forgot it.'

'Point is, all the good guys are gay.'

Perrie shook her head. 'Blaine is a great guy, seriously! When it's just me and him...'

'Exactly!' Leigh-Anne butted in. 'When it's just you and him. Never when his friends are around.'

'I'm having the exact same problem with Hughie,' Jesy said. 'Texted him yesterday - he looked at his phone, then put it straight back down. Yet when he's not with his friends, he has all the time in the world for me.'

'Classic,' Leigh-Anne commented. 'Don't get me wrong, Gary is a great friend. But I really fell for him which is so stupid, I know.'

'Don't feel stupid,' Jade told her. 'You can't help who you fall for, gay or straight.'

'People know you and Kyle are, sort of, seeing each other, right?' Perrie asked Jade.

'Well, just in a way that's very casual, I guess. They found out accidentally and ever since he's been so distant. Doesn't acknowledge me at school. He does reply to my texts sometimes, though.'

'Guys, we sound sad,' Jesy observed. The other three girls nodded in agreement.

Jade spoke up. 'We have to break up with them.'

Perrie almost jumped. 'Hang on...'

'I'm not sure...' Jesy started.

'Listen. We deserve way better. Leigh-Anne, your situation is a bit more tricky because you guys were never a thing, but I know how hard you fell for him.'

Leigh-Anne's frown confirmed her confliction. 'I will admit, I was planning on changing my name to Leigh-Anne Wood for him.'

'Well you gotta stop knocking on Wood and tell him that you need some distance,' Jade suggested.

'I can't do that, he doesn't know anything is wrong! We are really good friends, besides me fancying the pants off him. But right now I feel so awkward, I don't know how I'm going to face him at all.'

'That's why you need some distance; make some kind of excuse up,' Perrie told her. 'You'll probably hurt your friendship if he sees you've changed how you are around him because you can't act on your feelings for him.'

Leigh-Anne buried her head in her hands. 'Ugh I feel more stupid now!' The girls gave her a sympathetic look. 'I'm fine, I swear, I'll be fine.'

'Perrie,' Jade said, now addressing her. It was as if she was the maternal figure and was giving advice to her children. 'I know how much in love you are with Blaine but he said he didn't want to be seen with you.'

'...in public!'

'If he loved you, he would want to be seen with you everywhere. He doesn't respect you. You need a much better man. Don't degrade yourself for him.'

Perrie bit her lower lip. 'I know you have a point, but I really want to give him a chance.'

Jade looked at her, almost as if in disappointment. 'You don't have to break up with him if you really don't want to, but this isn't healthy for you. And Jesy, I can't tell you what to do either, but Hughie is treating you like Blaine is treating Perrie. It needs to stop.'

'What if I never find someone who will love me again?' Jesy asked, looking away from the girls' intense gazes. 'I'm not as pretty as you girls...'

'Oh Jesy!' They all said in unison.

'No, seriously! Out of all of us, I'm the one who gets picked on the most. When you guys aren't around, you don't see...' Jesy stopped herself when her voice cracked. They gave her a moment to breathe. 'Look, he's made me feel really special and I don't want to jeopardise that.'

Leigh-Anne reached out and grabbed Jesy's hand. 'But seeing what he's doing to you now is not making you feel special. It's making you feel awful.'

'I think we all just need to confront our guys and see what they say,' Jade advised. 'We need to be really honest with them. We can practice now, take turns. Let's just say how we feel to each other to prepare ourselves for later, okay?'

'Who wants to start?' Perrie asked.

'I'll start,' Jesy said. The dampness of her eyes revealed her desperation to get out what was tearing her apart inside. She looked at her girls for some comfort. 'I don't really know how to begin...'

► 'Whatever you feel, we're listening,' Leigh-Anne said comfortingly.

Jesy looked down at her lap. 'In my memory, all the small things, like daggers in my mind...'

The girls all looked at each other.

'I don't know if that made me feel better or worse,' Perrie said. 'But they've let us down, right? We shouldn't put up with that. I don't know how I'm going to cope, but I have you girls.'

'We all have each other.' Leigh-Anne smiled. 'And we have that sleepover tomorrow too. What movie should we watch?'

'The Notebook,' Perrie said.

'All of the Harry Potter films?' Jesy proposed.

'Fancying The Fault in Our Stars to be honest,' Jade recommended.

Leigh-Anne shrugged. 'Mean Girls it is then.'

'It's almost time to leave for school,' Jade said, looking at the grandfather clock near their table. 'I don't know how I'll face Kyle.'

'Let's see how the morning goes,' Jesy told her. A notification beeped on her phone. Hughie Thompson just posted a photo on Instagram.

Jade's mouth dropped. 'You've done post notifications for when Hughie posts a photo on Instagram? Really?'

'It was my way of keeping an eye on him,' Jesy said as she opened the picture. She froze. The girls leaned over to look at it on the screen. The photo was of Hughie with his arm around a girl.

'Isn't that Rachael Parker?' Perrie asked.

Jesy nodded. 'I kinda thought he had a thing for her.'

Perrie put her hand on Jesy's arm. 'Oh honey...'

'It's fine. It's fine. If anything, this has helped me with that confrontation later.' Jesy stood up as she slid her arms into the sleeves of her coat. 'Come on, girls. We have some boys hearts to break today.'
