Perrie looked around the corner of the hallway, her hands softly touching the edge of the lockers. She rarely witnessed the corridors of her school so bare. Her body shook as a chill passed through her, 'somebody stepping over your grave', her mother would tell her.

She exhaled loudly, then covered her mouth with her free hand. Her handbag swung in the other, tapping against the wall. She put all of her weight on her toes then back on her heel, and then back again. A door closing down one of the many connecting corridors drew her attention, yet was disappointed when nobody appeared.

'He's coming, don't worry about it. He said he was coming so he will. He's probably just stuck talking to one of his mates on the way, you know what he's like.'

Perrie heard the ding of her text tone from her handbag. Her hands were inside before the tone finished, and she pulled the phone to her face. It was Jesy, not Blaine. She scrunched her nose and tightened her lips. 'Jesus Blaine, where are ya man?'

'I'm here! What are you doing talking to yourself?'

Perrie spun. She would have kept spinning had Blaine not put his hands on her arms to stop her. A fear was evident in the wideness of her eyes, and they remained like that until the shock subsided. A smile crept on her face.

'I thought you weren't going to make it,' Perrie told him. The elevation of her heart rate caused her chest to rapidly expand and retract, and it now wasn't from the shock. 'I should know with you that when I say to meet at two, to actually say half an hour earlier to get you here on time.'

'Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen,' Blaine said as he pecked her flushed cheek. She fell for his charm, and as soon as his lips left her cheek, they met her lips. An addictive toxin spread through her mouth; it kept her from pulling away, as if she was slowly being sucked into the chambers of his heart.

When he finally pulled his tongue out from hers, she remained frozen in the same position. Her eyes struggled to open, and once she realised her mouth was still hanging, she closed it and looked to the ground.

'I guess the fastest way to my heart is through my mouth.' As soon as she said it, she realised how weird that sounded.

For Perrie, dating a guy who had more friends than One Direction fans - okay, maybe an over-exaggeration - terrified her. She only had her three best friends in the entire world, and the only guy to show any kind of interest in her turned out to be one of the coolest guys in the school. No wonder she was anxious every single time they met. She worried that one day he would gaze upon her and realise he could do better.

That's what she always told herself. It was made even worse by the fact that absolutely nobody in the school knows they're dating, or that they've even said a single word to one another.

'So what is this about?' Blaine asked.

Perrie struggled to form the words. She stuttered before she could form a sentence. 'Well... I... It's... kind of... awkward.'

'Spit it out,' he said, rather annoyed.

'Well I've seen on Facebook that you've got this house party coming up in a couple of days, and I know we're not even friends on Facebook but a couple of mutual friends are going...'

'I'm going to stop you right there,' he said and put his hand on her chin. 'Look, I know what you're getting at. You wanna go, I get it, it's going to be the best post-essay party of this semester. Live band. Free booze. Maybe people will have unprotected sex and pay for this party for the rest of their lives raising a baby they conceived in my parents' bed...'

Perrie looked away. 'Yeah, sounds like a blast,' she said unenthusiastically.

'But the thing is, people don't know we're a... thing. And I kind of want to keep it that way.'

Perrie's heart stopped beating at a rapid pace. In fact, it felt like it stopped beating period. 'Is there something wrong with me?'

'No! I didn't say that! Please don't think I mean that.'

'Then wouldn't the party be the perfect way for us to, well, come out? I mean, I know most of my tagged photos don't paint the nicest picture of me, especially the one from Leigh-Anne's sleepover where I fell asleep before the other girls and they made me look like Beetlejuice - honestly their craftsmanship was admirable, I'll give them that - but I can scrub up well.'

'It's not that.'

'Then what is it?'

Blaine allowed a moment of silence to torture her.

'The things you do with your friends, the sleepovers...'

'Free food,' she interjected.

'...the playground in the park...'

'Free exercise.'

'...the trips to Disneyland Paris...'

'Don't knock Disney. It is a part of me.'

Blaine sighed. 'Those things just aren't, well, cool. I just need more time to come to terms with that and no doubt it will be a shock to my friends too. Let's just leave the party out of it, okay?'

'But I...'

'I gotta go.' He kissed her forehead before running off back down the corridor. She watched after him. His kiss didn't feel as warm as before. She kept watching, even after he disappeared out of sight. As hard as she fought it, she couldn't stop a single tear from falling.

Her text tone beeped again. It snapped her back to reality, forgetting that she hadn't replied to Jesy yet.

'Has she not texted back yet?' Jade asked Jesy as she leaned onto one of the tables in the cafeteria.

Jesy shook her head. 'No, and neither has that dick over there.' She nudged her head towards a group of guys sitting a distant table. Jade looked over.

'Remind me of which one again?'

'The one with the blue flannel shirt. I really don't like that shirt, it puts me off actually.'

'You go on one date with him and you think you can judge what he wears?' Jade laughed.

'I can change him.' Jesy tapped her fingers on the table. 'I'm gonna text him.'

'Absolutely not!'

'Why not?!'

Jade raised her eyebrows and pursed her lips. 'Seriously?'

Jesy looked around to make sure nobody was listening. After school, the cafeteria was usually buzzing with groups and cliques meeting up. Today, it had seen busier days.

'We texted non-stop until three in the morning all last week. We had a great first date and he texted me after that too. It's not like this guy is a stranger; we've been to the same school for years. I can just say something cool.'

Jesy picked up her phone and started texting. Jade didn't have the strength to stop her. She heard the whoosh sound.

'What did it say?'

'Oh my God Jesy, that's diabolical!'

Jesy ignored the comment and looked straight at Hughie. She watched as he reached into his pocket for his phone. She smiled knowing he would see it. And he did see it, except he locked the screen and put it back into his pocket.

'That dick!'

'What did you expect with that stupid text?' Jade said, though instantly regretted her harsh tone. 'Sorry, you upset?'

'Of course I am, wouldn't you be?'

'Not really, happens to me all the time with my boyfriend. Watch.' Jade looked as a guy was passing their table. 'Hey Kyle.'

He walked straight past without so much as blinking in her direction. Jade looked at Jesy and shrugged. 'See.'

'Does that not bother you? It's like they don't even want to be seen in public with us!'

'Nah, I just get on with it. I feel like we'll need a sleepover at someone's soon, I'm feeling a vent coming on.'

'Who's turn is it?' Jesy asked. Her eyes wandered over to Hughie. He was still laughing with the boys that surrounded his table. Kyle joined them. 'Oh, isn't it Leigh-Anne's turn? Where is she?'

'Yep, it's her turn. Think she's with Gary; she's in love with him! She cannot stop gushing about how green his eyes are and how wavy his hair is.'

'He is gorgeous, but she does know that he's gay, doesn't she?'

Leigh-Anne laughed for the hundredth time since meeting with Gary after school finished. They sat at a bench in Hyde Park with finished wrappers littering the tabletop. Leigh-Anne went to drink from her orange juice bottle without realising it was empty.

'And then he told me that if we go for snooker next week, and I win, he will let me drive his car.' Jace told her. His eyes never strayed from her, and she could feel the connection they had through his gaze alone. Their conversation just kept going and going, with him doing most of the talking. Leigh-Anne needed a moment to rest her face from all the smiling. 'Sorry, I've mainly been talking about me; I wanted to ask how the anti-bullying club was going?'

Leigh-Anne's voice squeaked after not using it to speak in quite some time. 'It's going great actually. We have had a few new sign-ups recently, and we've expanded to the internet too and allowing international students join in as well. Sort of building an army of women. We haven't had any boys sign up.'

'I'd be more than happy to sign up, bullying is something I can relate to.'

Leigh-Anne hit his arm. She wanted to keep it there longer than she did. 'You're friends with everyone, nobody would dare bully you.'

'They used to back in my old school. Called me gay boy and faggot. It really hurt.'

'Oh I'm so sorry, that was so rude of me! I hate it when people use homophobic names against people who aren't even gay. Well, I don't like it at all against anyone, but you know, people are so quick to judge and...'

'What do you mean, I'm not gay?'

Leigh-Anne froze. 'I... uhm...'

In an instant, her heart collapsed. She swayed back slightly, almost as if she was about to pass out. Her lower lip trembled a little. Then she forced a smile. 'Got'cha!' she lied.

Gary burst into a fit of laughter. 'It's no wonder we get on so well, you're amazing. I can be a pretty convincing straight guy, can't I?'

Leigh-Anne made a noise while trying to keep a smile on her face. 'Mmhmm.'

'Oh, that's tickled me. Okay to meet before school tomorrow?'

Leigh-Anne took a while before she could formulate her thoughts. 'Oh, uhh, I'm afraid not. I usually walk with the girls to school on Friday mornings and grab a coffee and a croissant beforehand.'

'No problem, I'll just see you around school then. You ready to leave?'

She nodded harder than she meant to. 'Yes, I'm ready.'

They gathered up all the empty packets from the table and deposited them into the nearest bin. An awkward silence now crept in between them, though Gary remained blissfully unaware by it. Leigh-Anne now struggled to say anything to him.

Once they parted their separate ways, Leigh-Anne felt her phone vibrate.

Trying to hold back her tears, she put the phone back in her pocket. She looked around the busy London street before crossing the road. She wanted so desperately to talk to her friends, yet a bigger part of her wanted to remain alone for a while.

Jesy walked alongside the stone of the River Thames. She ran her hands along it, gazing mindlessly into the water below. She looked at her phone again and opened her messages with Hughie. Still no reply. It had been days without a reply.

'Why are you letting a guy infect your head? This is not you, Jesy!' She said out loud. A cough from behind her brought her back to the world around her. She couldn't make out any faces of the people passing.

The lights from Tower Bridge helped clear her vision, and as she stood admiring it, she felt her thoughts recollect again. She started to remember all the times they would see each other at school and he would blank her completely, yet when they had their first date, it was magical. Being the gentleman he was at the time, without any of his friends around, he held her hand, and kissed her. Her first kiss. Now? Jesy felt desolate and alone. They all did - Perrie, Jade, Leigh-Anne.

► They needed some time to be alone, to articulate their feelings in a way they could make sense of their confusion.

Jesy turned from the river. 'When you hold me in the street and you kiss me on the dance floor...'

London had never seemed so big and empty.
