《Only you can make me feel better... (Calamity x Drift)》Chapter 28: I just saw a ghost

Me and Dire just arrived at Baracuma when it was around 16:00. We had already left the airport with our bags, on our way to the Forest Of The Screaming Souls with an ATK. Dire asked. I explained while riding the ATK. Dire said looking out to the view. I said. Dire asked and looked a little nervously while looking at me. I said nodding slightly. Dire nodded and looked at his right again to the view, while I had my gaze fixed on the road.
We were passing by a sign that had 'Minglelake Forest' written on it but with a big red X on it. Under it there was written 'Forest Of The Screaming Souls' in big black letters. It also had written that it was only 3 kilometers away. I was getting a little nervous too as I saw the sign, but tried to stay strong and push that fear away.
The 3 kilometers passed by and we arrived at the location. We left the ATK just at the border of the forest. We just entered the forest and it already gives me the chills. It's so dead here, a little dark and the atmosphere here is creepy. When we were walking, we came across a medium big lake. There were branches and dead leaves floating on the lake and the water looked really dirty. You don't want to drink from here. When I continued walking, I noticed Dire was standing still. I turned around to dire and saw he looked like he saw a ghost... I think. I asked while walking back towards him. Dire said with wide eyes, staring somewhere. Okay I was right. He did see a ghost. I looked at the direction Dire was looking and my eyes widened as I saw it. A freaking ghost... It was floating on the other side of the lake. I quickly pulled Dire behind a big tree, so that the ghost couldn't see us. I peeked to see if the ghost was gone, but it wasn't.
Just then, I spotted a 2 story wooden cabin/house with a water well outside of it. I looked at the ghost again and saw it back was turned to us all the time. I turned to Dire, who just leaned against the tree, not daring to peek. I explained. Dire nodded as he understood. I looked at the ghost one more time. It back was still faced towards us. Perfect. Okay Drift... You can do this. 1... I took a deep breath and grabbed Dire's arm. 2... I exhaled in a relaxed way. 3... Run... I pulled Dire with me and we ran towards the house. We made it after we ran and I tried opening the door. Luckily, the door was slightly opened so we entered the house and I closed the door. I saw that there was a lock so I locked the door for safety. We were both panting because of the running. Damn I've never ran so fast.

Dire was looking out the window while holding the curtain open slightly. He pulled away, closing the curtain. I asked resting my hands on my sides. Dire said and I nodded. I looked around the house and saw that it was a cute house but it was abandoned. If someone would live here, this house would be perfect for vacation. On the left side, there were 3 sofa's and a TV. On the right was the kitchen, but the living room and kitchen were connected. And just next to the front door, there was another door and that was a toilet. I walked to the stairs, which was between the living room and the kitchen. We walked upstairs and were met with a hallway with 3 doors. 2 on the right and 1 on the left. I entered the first room on the right side and it was a bedroom with a 2 persons bed, a closet and a desk. I went to the other door and it was exactly the same. I then checked the last room and that was a bathroom. I turned to Dire, who was behind me. I asked joking a little.Dire said sarcastically, with a smile on his face.
It's been a while. I think around 1 hour. I was just done with setting my stuff in my room. Dire was in the other room, doing his stuff. I figured we might stay here since the forest is pretty big and we might need a few days to find the plant. We were just lucky to find this house. I then heard the door click open, so I turned around and saw Dire standing there. He asked. " I said. Dire said with a small smile.I said back and Dire left my room, closing the door. I changed into my pajamas and went straight into bed. The mattress was okay. It wasn't too hard, so I think I would be comfortable in this bed. The pillows also weren't that hard. The only thing that made me feel uneasy was the fact that nobody has been in this house for... How much years actually? Ahh, forget it. I just need to close my eyes and think about positive things. Not about the old bed. In a matter of time, it will be morning. I finally shoved the thoughts away, and closed my eyes, falling into sleep.
I started waking up and noticed a slight pain in my shoulders. Ughh, probably because of the mattress. I slightly groaned as I was sitting up right, while my eyes were still closed. I opened my eyes ad grabbed my phone from the nightstand and saw it was 11:00. WhOoPs. I think I over slept A LiTtLe. got up and walked to the bathroom, doing my morning routine and putting my last stage clothes on. I walked downstairs and saw that Dire was sitting at the dinner table, while eating his home-made caesar salad. Across him was another caesar salad, which was probably mine. I walked to the dining table and sat across Dire. Dire asked while I removed my kitsune mask and put it on the table. I said complaining. Dire said with a frown. Dire shoved the other plate towards me with some caeser salad on it and gave me a fork. Dire said. I nodded and we ate the salad in silence.

After eating, me and Dire were getting ready to leave the house. I put my kitsune mask back on and walked to the door with Dire behind me. I opened the door and saw it was a little foggy but I could still see my sight. We left the house and Dire closed the door behind him. I said, while walking and looking around with Dire next to me. Dire said as he was also looking around. I grabbed the small piece of paper with the picture on it with a caladium leaf. I said while showing the picture to Dire. Dire nodded after he took a close look at the picture and I put the paper away in my pocket.
After we were searching for about 20 minutes, I heard a faint, weird sound. As if someone was breathing out through their mouth. I asked and Dire turned his head towards me. He asked.I said shrugging. I was probably just imagining those sounds or something like that. We just kept on walking, with our eyes peeled open. There were plants all over. Not to mention, dead plants. But a caladium its colors are really standing out so it should be easy to find it, right? It's also weird that there would be a white and pink plant between the dead plants, grass and trees. I guess this plant was really special or something to be still alive or something.
As I was looking around and at the same time thinking, I heard the sound again but this time a little bit louder. I quickly looked behind me but saw nothing. I saw Dire was a little nervous, and so was I. Dire said nervously while looking around. We couldn't see anything than just the trees and the ground. With the sound creeping around us, the atmosphere got really spooky. I said while my eyes were darting all over the place.
Me and Dire were on our guard now due to the sounds. Slowly walking, trying to make less noise as possible. Dire asked whispering. I said trying to sound fearless. I heard Dire gulp because he was scared. I was also a little scared to tell you the truth, but I can't just give up like this. Suddenly, there was a gush of wind, which startled me a little. What I then heard made me freeze in place. A sort of screaming, coming from a ghost that was floating towards... us? OH SHIT IT'S FLOATING TOWARDS US! I yelled and grabbed his arm, running. We kept on running and running, taking the route that we just took. Dire looked back and saw the ghost was still after us. Dire stopped, pulling my arm which caused me to stop too. I yelled. Dire didn't say anything and just closed his eyes. In just 1 second, he turned into his werewolf form. He said with his deep, werewolf voice while he went on his foot and paws, like a real werewolf would be standing like. I sat on his back with my hands on his back. He started running fast, giving me a slight adrenaline rush trough my spine. I looked back and saw the ghost was slowly fading away as it couldn't catch up with the running speed we had. Dire continued running and running, without looking back or stopping.
After a while of running, the house was in sight. I sighed in relief as I saw it. Dire slowed down as we made it to the front of the house. I got off his back and quickly looked at the direction we came running from. I didn't see any ghost so it was safe again. Dire turned back to his normal form and was panting a little from the running. I asked putting a hand on his shoulder. He said between breaths. I removed my hand from his shoulder and opened the door.I said while stepping aside for Dire to get in. He walked in and I walked in afterwards, closing the door behind me. Dire went to the living room area and just let his body collapse on the couch. I went to the kitchen area and grabbed a glass of water. I walked to Dire and handed the glass to him. He said and drank it up.

Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
