《Hidden Fox》Chapter Seventeen

We headed inside, navigating through the house until we found the Pack Doctor's wing. I asked the man at the front desk if we could see Ivy and he led us to one of the doors along the wall. After a quick knock, he let us in.

"Hey, Ivy." I said with a smile. She looked up from the bed she was laying on and returned the smile. It it faded when she saw the three people trailing me.

"It's okay," I reassured her. "This is April's mother, and these are Alpha and Luna Williams of the Crescent Moon Pack. They're here to listen to your story. They want to help get my mate back." Emerald nodded behind me and gave the girl a soft smile.

Ivy sighed and launched into everything she'd told me in the woods. But she added something horrifying she hadn't told me before. She had been sexually abused. I wanted to scream, throw something at the rogue's heads, I wanted them dead. How could they call themselves a pack? How could they do that to innocent Weres?

"That's horrible!" Luna Anderson whispered when Ivy had finished. She gripped the wall for support, or out of anger. Maybe both at this point. I knew she was imagining the things that could happen to her daughter.

Emerald had tears in her eyes and she gripped her mate's hand. "No. . ." Ivy nodded solemnly.

"My sister is there. As are more girls that might as well be my sisters."

The Luna took a shaky breath. "Then we'll just have to get them out of there."

The doctor came back and told us she needed her rest, so we let her be and went back to the living room. April's mom — I suddenly remembered her telling me her name was June — led Emerald and River to the kitchen while I took a seat on the couch and turned the TV on. I needed to distract my brain for a while so I could come back fresh.

I didn't notice I had dozed off until the sound of little kids' voices woke me up. I looked to my right to see Ivy watching the TV, her knees curled to her chest. The doctor must have deemed her healthy enough to come out of his wing. I glanced at the clock and realized I had slept for nearly twenty hours!

The voices got louder until three kids appeared, running into the room. I recognized one of them as May — April's little sister — but the other two I have never seen before. Behind them came Emerald carrying a toddler.

"Shhh!" She scolded the kids. "You don't have to be so loud!"

They ignored her and the little girl I didn't recognize came up to me. She looked about three years old and the way she was running with the other kids, I knew she was shy. The bright sparkle in her blue eyes proved she had a big personality though.

I smiled at her, "Hi."

"Who are you?" She demanded.

"I'm Xavier. What's your name?"

She stared at me for a few moments, trying to decide if she trusted me or not. "I'm Amy." She said finally. She didn't give me a chance to say anything else before she pointed out everyone in the room. "That's Jade, my brother; that's May, Mommy says she's my cousin; that's Opal, my annoying baby sister; and that's Mommy; and-" She trailed off as her big eyes landed on Ivy.

"That's Ivy." I told her.

She looked at me and whispered loudly, "why does she look like that?"

Emerald caught what she said. "Amethyst! That was rude!"

"But I whispered it." I held my laugh back. It doesn't work like that, kid.

"Am I allowed to go near her?" Amy asked me.

I nodded, "I think that should be fine." I followed her over to Ivy, who's eyes were still focused on the TV. "Ivy?"

Ivy blinked a few time before focusing on us. "Yes?"

"Amy wanted to say 'hi.''

Ivy smiled slightly at the little girl. "Oh! Hi Amy."

Amy dove right into questions, "Why are you here? Where did you come from? What are you? I don't smell wolf and you aren't human either. Why do you look so skinny?" Like usual, Ivy answered all the questions except what she is, going easy as the child was young.

Emerald came over and apologized to Ivy, grabbing Amy's hand and leading her away. The kid protested the entire time until I could no longer hear her.

I sat down directly in front of Ivy so I blocked her view from the TV.

"Hey!" She protested.

I ignored that, "stop."

She stared at me. "Stop what?"

"Stop avoiding the question!"

"I don't know what your talking about." She looked anywhere in the room but me.

I growled softly. "Ivy, we need to know as much information so we can rescue April!"

She sighed, " I know. It's just, last time I told someone my secret, the rogues found me and captured me. I was only four years old, but I remember that. They took a lot of my memories away, it this one stuck."

I softened my gaze and decided to let that piece go. "I know it's hard, but you can trust us, okay? I promise."

She sighed, but nodded. I called June, her mate, Emerald, and River back to the living room. I didn't let anyone else, telling the kids to go play. These were the only people Ivy could trust right now. When they filed in, I nodded to Ivy, telling her it's okay to tell them everything.

She took a deep breath, looking over her mini-crowd. "I guess I'll start with my shift. You guys should know the whole story." She looked up, thinking for a moment. "It was my fourth birthday. We were all outside around me and my cake as my friends and family sang Happy Birthday. I blew the candles and I felt my body shift; my bones rearranging themselves. Everyone was frozen in shock as I shifted for the first time. No one had heard of a four year old shifting. And no one had noticed the pairs of eyes watching from the forest. I think the rogues somehow picked up I was different and were watching me at every birthday, waiting for me to shift. When I did, they were delighted. Floods of wolves poured from the trees. The attack only lasted a short while, as one of them grabbed me and my little sister — assuming she was different too — and ran off. I haven't seen the rest of my family since. I can't even recall their faces anymore, or my pack's name.

"A year later, a two year old was brought in." Ivy paused as horrified gasps filled the room. She nodded slowly. "They said her name was Meadow, but I'm not sure if that's right. I have a theory they change our names to keep us more hidden. We also don't know what her animal is. She hasn't had her first shift yet."

I held up my hand, "Wait, they captured this two year old for no reason?"

Ivy shook her head. "You could smell she wasn't going to be a wolf. Instead of just forest scents on her, there was fresh rain and flowers."

June's mouth popped open, "that sounds very similar to April's scent!"

Ivy shrugged, "Maybe Meadow is like her then. Nothing happened for six years after that. I grew up with my sister and Meadow, trapped in a cell, and being the rogues play thing and lab rat. Then when I was about eleven, a girl they called Willow joined. She was twelve years old, and recently had her first shift. I remember her not talking to anyone much.

"Three years ago, the rogues brought back a three year old girl with fiery red hair and quite a temper. None of us had fought against the men like she did. The best part is she is a super sweet kid when you get to know her."

I smiled, encouraging Ivy to continue. "You seem to have gotten to know these girls really well."

She nodded sadly. "Yes. We were all each other had. Kalama and Meadow were like little sisters to me."

"Kalama?" Someone asked.

Ivy smiled, "The red-head. I love her name; whether it's her birth name or not, it fits her so perfectly. Kalama means 'flaming torch' in Hawaiian. And she is literally a flaming torch. Burning strong with anger one minute and sweet and calm the next; almost as if someone blew her fire out." She explained.

"Do you know what she is?"

She nodded, "yes. It's actually incredible; something I didn't know was possible. But, then again, no one thinks a fox shifter or a tiger shifter is possible either. However, it isn't mine to share."

I nodded in understanding, "and what are you exactly?"

She sighed and stood up. "I'll just shift."

"Okay." I said and everyone watched as her bones cracked and fur sprouted. Soon, in the middle of the living room where Ivy was standing only a moment before, was a small black cat.
