《Against the Gods》9. Better People

^^A/N: Eve

I watch Eve stumble onto the stage. She looks as though she could faint at any moment. Those daggers are just as deadly as if we were stabbed while being mortals. Not only that they have a sort of poisoning property to them.

I was barely able to heal after various injuries from them, but that's due to my high mana.

I still can't shake the image of her coming to my rescue.

She said anybody would do it, but she's wrong, because for my entire life nobody has ever done anything like that for me.

If I saw her getting beat up in the streets, I would probably look the other way, and I'm sure others would as well.

But right when I was about to give in, she burst into the alley fearlessly. For a moment I thought she was an angel come to save me. She couldn't have been a demon, because I was banished from Hell so they would never save me. And don't angels come down to the mortal world sometimes to save people? She looked too beautiful to be a mortal and even prettier than any demon I'd seen as well.

The disgusting mortals seem to agree with my assessment since they all gasp as she comes onstage. I should rip out their eyes and shove it down their throats for looking at her with those disgusting expressions.

The auctioneer puts a new ring on his hand. Eve's collar starts to glow, and bat-like wings sprout out of her back.

That's strange, I thought she was a vampire, but those are definitely demon wings.

"As you can see ladies and gentleman, although she may seem like a vampire, an already rare beast, she has various inexplainable extra abilities!" babbles that idiotic announcer.

He gestures to someone on the other side of the stage who comes with a silver dagger and a vial of blood on a pillow and takes it from the other human. He continues, "For instance another of her -"

He's cut off from murmurs in the crowd. It seems they are distracted by something happening on the second floor seating.

The crowd parts as a small boy escorted by two huge bodyguards trailing behind him makes his way to the front and center of the second floor.

The boy has violet hair and even darker purple eyes. He has an almost bored expression on his face, ignoring people as they try to greet him. Some might even describe the boy as being cute looking, but something about him rubs me the wrong way.

Upon closer inspection, I realize his clothing is actually made entirely of metal, that flows like it is fabric.

"I'm so glad the allusive Dagger King could grace us with your presence today!" calls out the announcer, "we will not disappoint you! Today we have a vampire with special abilities. For example, she can even heal from silver wounds."

He approaches her with the silver knife, and cuts her on the arm. She shoots him a look of contempt. It looks like she can't move away. The collar they have on her is forcing her to stay in place.

Blood gushes from the wound, and she pales. She's already weak from the dagger wounds from before, she won't be able to take more of this!

The man takes the vial of blood and tips it into her mouth. The wound heals instantly, and the audience gasps.

Suddenly, Eve's collar dims and she falls onto the floor, and jumps up tackling the auctioneer. She's about to punch him in the face, but her collar lights up again, and she freezes. The auctioneer get up, brushing himself off.

He chuckles nervously, "Sorry about that folks. As you can see she is a strong one! Rest assured we will strengthen the enchantment on her collar if you buy her!"

I look at the audience, who seem on the edge of their seats. I thought that would lower their enthusiasm to get her, but they seem even more excited now. The purple haired mortal is now smiling like a cat toying with a mouse. He leans forward, placing his hands on the railing in front of him, and stares at Eve with a dangerous glint in his eyes.

Eve on the other hand doesn't seem to be doing well right now. The red streaks have spread to now creep up from under her shirt, and are halfway up her neck right now. I feel like I should rush forward and do something, but what can I do?

"In fact friends, the only thing that can harm her are blessed silver weapons, which are incredibly rare. She's practically invulnerable!" prattles the auctioneer, "that's why the starting bid for her is one million gold pieces!"

The mortals gasp. Apparently that is a lot of money for them.

A fat man in a three piece navy suit lifts a stick with the number eighteen on it.

"We have an offer for one million from the gentleman in the blue suit!"

A woman raises her stick with the number thirty-seven on it.

"I bid one and a half million!" she declares.

"One and a -" starts the auctioneer.

"Two million" says the fat man.

"I bid four million," says an old man with a handlebar mustache.

"Four million from the gentleman in the back! Any other -" the auctioneer says.

"Six million!" shouts the fat man.

"Six and a half million" the old man declares.

"Eight million" counters the guy in the blue suit.

"Looks like we've got a bidding war on our hands folks! Going for eight million to the man in the blue suit! Any other offers?" asks the auctioneer. The old man looks as though he's ready to lift his stick again but a voice cuts him off.

"Two hundred million!" calls out the purple-haired boy, raising his stick with the number 666 on it. The auctioneer looks like he can barely contain his joy, but schools his features to look calm again. Meanwhile Eve looks even more sick than before, physically shaking as she looks up scornfully at the boy.

"Two hundred million gold pieces! Any other offers?" he pauses, "Going once, going twice, SOLD!"

And with that, Eve collapses onto the ground.

It's as though time stood still. I run forward, not even thinking of the consequences or what I'm going to do.

All I can think of is that I can't lose her. I know if I don't do something, anything, she'll die.

Her words from earlier ring in my ears as I rush toward her, find better people in your life.

Isn't she the best person I've found so far? I can't lose her or I'll have nothing again.

I don't know how I'm going to save her. I just know I can't let her go.

I get to her and cradle her in my arms. Suddenly, an idea pops into my mind on how to save her.

It's a long shot, but I have to try.

I can see in my peripheral vision people rushing toward me, but I don't care. I close my eyes and mutter a spell in demon language. The air around us whips around violently, blowing back the people rushing at us.

Then with my heart pounding in my chest, I kiss Eve. My lips crash onto her soft lips, and we're surrounded by a bright light.

The bright light dies down, and standing there is a woman with black and silver hair and ruby eyes.

The people look shocked as Nyx and Eve seem to be gone, and instead are replaced with this woman who looks to be in her early twenties.

"Oh my! I seem to have given you all quite the shock!" says the woman, "I should introduce myself. I'm Venus, and I'm here to beat the shit out of you pieces of trash!"
