《Against the Gods》5. A Cold Winter Night

A/N: Eve three years later, so she is eight years old.

I was huddled on the side of my bed, my sister fast asleep next to me. I'd given her all the blankets since it was a frigid night.

Unfortunately, that meant I was freezing. I also hadn't eaten for days, so my stomach was so empty it hurt.

There was a huge snowstorm so I couldn't go to school. Generally, when there was school I could steal things, and sell them for money or worst case, just take food from the trashcan. I was too young to work, so it was my only option.

I looked at my little sister, Rain, and frowned. She was much too skinny, and was smaller than all the other kids her age. We hadn't seen our father for two weeks, which was probably for the best.

Suddenly, I heard the door of our apartment open, and somebody loudly stumbling in. It must be my father. He sounded pretty drunk.

I wrapped the blankets around my sister tighter, since she is shivering from the cold.

"Harper! Where are you, you little brat!" he shouted, slurring some of his words. Reluctantly, I walked outside the bedroom me and my sister shared to where my father was.

He sat in a worn looking couch with a bottle of vodka and was smoking a cigarette. He got up from the chair, and walked toward me. He easily dwarfed my small eight year old body.

"I'm out of cash. I need more," he demanded.

"I'm sorry, I don't have any," I squeak out. He takes a long puff from his cigarette, and grabs my arm. I try to pull away, but it's no use. He brings the lit end of his cigarette to my arm, and extinguishes it by pressing it down on my skin. I scream, and he releases my arm.

"I KNOW YOU HAVE MONEY! WHERE IS IT?" he screamed.

"I... I don't have any! School has been closed because of the storm!" I said stuttering. He hits me in the face, and I fall down. I can already feel half my face starting to swell up. I'll have a black eye for sure tomorrow.

"What good are you if you don't have money, you useless piece of shit!" he shouts, as he staggers back towards the door.

I wake up, and cross over to my window. It's snowing outside, just like that day all those years ago. I wonder why I dreamed about it. I guess I'm a similar age now than I was back then.

I sigh, even now that I have money it doesn't seem like my life is easier. At least I don't have to starve in this one though. Everything would be great if people would just stop trying to kill me!

Unfortunately, in this world, people look down on me since I'm half-vampire, which counts as a beast. Beasts or magical creatures have low status, and it was quite the controversy when my parents got married. It doesn't help that my father has multiple illegitimate children too.

Most of them are dead now, due to them trying to kill me and my brother, Luther, or killing each other. I feel kind of guilty about it since they were just children, but they tried to kill me so I had no choice.

Luckily, there have been less assassination attempts since my father officially named me and my brother as heirs a year ago.

I look at the clock: it's 3:52 am. Maybe I can go back to sleep? I have training in a few hours so it would be good to get some more rest.

I lay back down on my bed, but I can't seem to fall asleep. My mind keeps drifting to bad memories from my past life. I wonder how my sister is doing. I'm not there to protect her, so will she be okay?

I need to find out how to bring her to this world or go back to my original world.

Suddenly, I hear a creaking noise as the door to my room opens. Two figures slip into the room, and I quickly jump out of the bed.

In front of me are two menacing looking adults. One of them has brown hair and a large scar running down the left side of his face, and is holding a simple flintlock handgun. In this world, they only have the technology to make early guns which are nothing like the modern guns we use now since they take so long to load and could have all sorts of mishaps.

The other assassin seemed younger, maybe early twenties? He had grey hair and a slender build. He was armed with various knives and was holding a rather cruel looking blade.

I stepped into the light stretching from the doorway, so they could see me.

"You know, if you're trying to kill someone, you should really do your research," I say.

"What the fuck are you talking about?" asks the brown haired assassin.

"You'll see soon. There's a reason why many people haven't killed me yet," I reply, smiling at them. He fires his gun at me, and I duck out of the way. The bullet hits the wall behind me. I get distracted by the loud sound of the gunshot though, and don't notice the other assassin's knife flying towards me.

I manage to react last minute, and dodge out of the way, but it still grazes my arm, cutting it. Well they aren't completely incompetent, they did use silver.

All of a sudden, the brown haired one starts violently coughing. His eyes widen as he begins coughing up blood. He falls to the ground and vomits blood. He looks at his companion, and the other assassin screams as he sees the other assassin's eyes and ears bleeding. The brown haired one finally collapses.

"What the hell just happened!" shouts the grey haired assassin stumbling away from me.

"Well, you should've known that I'm immune to poison. So I laced the air in my room with lethal toxins," I reply, walking toward him, "Seems like you're immune also. But that won't save you."

I pull out a modern handgun and shoot him. He falls to the ground, his blood creating a puddle on the floor.

I managed to create multiple modern weapons with magicraft. It took two years to learn how to do it, but it was worth it. These modern weapons have saved my life countless times. I even managed to make them more portable. The gun shrinks down and transforms into an innocent looking necklace with a black gemstone, which I put around my neck.

I don't even feel bad about killing these two. Undoubtedly they are trained assassins, and it seems they had no issue taking a job that would kill children.

I look out the window, and watch the snow fall to the ground. I smile; tomorrow is the first day of the Winter Festival. The Winter Festival was a fun holiday in this world with fireworks, a parade, and delicious food in the streets of the city. Sadly, for security reasons, I wasn't allowed to attend the festival all these years.

But I think I'm strong enough to defend myself now. This year I will definitely attend the festival!
