《Against the Gods》4. The Price of Pancakes

^^ A/N: picture of Eve, five years old

I look out the window of my room, surveying the tall towers of the Callisto castle.

The castle is beautiful in a sort of gothic way. Although it's almost as if whoever designed it knew the Callistos were the villains though. It has tall, black pointed towers and is on a mountain, overlooking the rest of the dukedom.

Today is my first day of training, and knowing this hell I've reincarnated into, it's not going to be easy.

Still, I think this training could actually be useful because of how dangerous this world is. Maybe one day with enough hard work I can be stronger than the male leads!

I chuckle evilly to myself; I'd love to see the look on Hal's face if that were to happen.

Anyway, I came up with a new plan to survive in this game. All I have to do is escape this castle when I'm old enough with a lot of cash, and start a new life of luxury. Of course Hal would probably be upset and try to harm my sister, so I have to figure out a way to get her to this world first. Plan B would be trying to find a way back to my world.

That's not too hard, right? Okay, fine, it's incredibly hard.

But this world has magic so it won't be impossible! Until then, I have to survive in this world, which means grueling training to build up my strength.

I look at the ornate grandfather clock in my room. It's 4:30 am. Ugh, so early. I make it a vow in my next life to be able to sleep till noon.

I pull a string next to my bed attached to a bell that calls for the maids. I feel a little bad waking them up this early, but my training starts soon so I have no choice.

In about five minutes, two maids come in and bow before me. The imagery is sort of awkward for me since two grown adults are bowing in front of a little child, but I don't say anything.

"You called my lady?" said one of the maids.

"Yes, I have training today. Please dress me in appropriate attire for it," I say.

"Of course my lady," the maid replied. The maid has grey hair and black eyes. The maid next to her has purple chin length hair.

They dress me in silence. But isn't this outfit too intense?

They put me in a black leather training outfit with riding boots. They put some accessories in my hair like hair clips shaped like skulls and bats. I seriously don't know how Eve didn't know she wasn't the villain. This aesthetic just screams evil!

But I guess in this world, this is the popular fashion for the Callisto dukedom. Honestly I don't hate it, it's pretty in a dark way and goes with Eve's look well, but it's a bit cliche that the villainess dresses like this.

When the maids are finished, I head toward the training grounds. I don't know the layout of the castle, but luckily the maids lead me to the training grounds outside the castle.

The training ground is a large open field with several targets and weapons on stands around it. In the middle of the field is a man with greenish-blue hair, two dark green horns, glowing green eyes, and large green bat wings. In other words, Eve's father, Duke Vincent Callisto.

I knew it was him because he matches the description my sister gave for him perfectly. Also the two green horns were a big giveaway.

He is a descendent of demons, so he's incredibly powerful. He can summon and control poisonous plants, often killing people with giant carnivorous plants as well. He is also an expert swordsman, and is probably the top in the nation right now. That will probably change when the male leads grow up though.

"Father, what are you doing here?" I ask, bowing toward him.

"Your mother told me of your humiliating defeat, so I've decided your training needed my personal attentional. I'll be your instructor today," he replies.

Well I'm screwed; this guy is one of the cruelest and powerful villains in the game. And now he's my instructor?!?? Also, isn't calling it a humiliating defeat a little excessive? I'm still alive aren't I!

"Thank you for your generosity father," I say and bow again, thinking it better to appease this guy than risk pissing him off.

"First lesson!" he declares, "It is critical to be aware of your own limitations and weaknesses so you can be prepared for your opponent to use it against you. Do you know what your weaknesses are?"

"Um... I run really slow and am pretty weak?" I ask.

He laughs, "Well yes, but I mean as a half vampire, half demon descendent."

Crap! Once again I regret not listening to my sister talk about her dumb game. I know she brought up Eve's weaknesses but I wasn't really paying attention.

Okay maybe I can figure it out from how the male leads killed Eve in the game. I remember most of those since it was so gruesome it made me question the PG rating of the game.

I know she was poisoned by Theodore, but what was she poisoned by? I remember he had to mix in something for the poison to actually work but I don't remember what it was. There was also Finn who mind controlled Eve to walk into traffic. However, just getting run over wouldn't be enough to kill Eve because of her super healing. There was something special about the wheels of the carriage that ensured her death.

"I don't know," I reply, giving up.

"This is worse than I thought!" he says, "What have you been learning this whole time?"

He lets out a loud sigh, "Since you're half vampire you are vulnerable to silver. If you get stabbed in the heart with silver, you will die. Silver weapons will hurt you just like any weapon would hurt a human."

"What about normal weapons?" I ask.

"They will hurt, but it will instantly heal and do no damage to you. With wounds from silver weapons, you need to remove the silver in you then feed on blood to heal it. If it hits you in the heart though, you'll just be dead."

"Okay, what about on my half demon side?"

"Demons have almost no weaknesses," he replies, swelling with pride, "the only thing you have to be careful about is to not have light magic mix with your dark magic."

"Wait, does that mean I can't fight with someone with light magic?" I inquire.

"No of course not! It means you shouldn't use blessed magicraft or light magic to enhance your powers," he says. Yes! Otherwise, I would be completely powerless against the crown prince.

"What is magicraft? I thought there was only the special magic people get like light magic, vampire powers, etc." I respond.

"That's your battle magic. Magicraft is more general, and anyone with mana can learn it. Using it you can enchant objects, or create weapons like my sword, Deathreaper," he says gesturing to the sword on his belt. I shudder. That is the famous sword passed down for generations in the Callisto family. It feeds on the souls of those that have been killed by it, and can cut through armor like a hot knife through butter. He continues talking, "there is also potions, herbology, and magical beasts which you'll learn about when you'll go to academy! There are other more minor fields of magic, but basically there are other forms of magic to learn than battle magic."

Huh, I kinda thought he'd be more scary, but he's kinda being okay right now?

Anyway, the battle magic thingy wouldn't really help me that much anyway, since the only battle magic I have is the ability to sprout wings and fly. No flame powers, light magic, etc. Just the benefits from being a vampire with isn't battle magic, and instead it's magic I get from being half magical beast/monster. Strengthening that side isn't really about increasing my mana, it's strengthening my body. Ugh, why do I always have to have the hardest route? Now I have to work out and stuff if I want to be powerful!

"So, since most of your strength comes from being a vampire, we're going to be training that today!" he says smiling, "Let's start with fifteen laps around this field!"

And here I thought he was a good guy.

I run around the field which is hard considering this body's weak endurance. It's also hard being STARED at as a run by my father with a murderous gaze. I can tell from his stern face he's judging me harshly in his head.

By the fifth lap, I'm ready to collapse. I finish the six lap, and feel the energy drain out of me. When was the field so big? There's no way I can run nine more laps.

"Please... let me... have... break... dying," I say in between pants.

"Come on, you can do it! You're almost halfway there," he replies.

"No, can't... do it" I answer.

"If you do it," he strokes his chin, "you get pancakes!"

Suddenly, I feel a rush of energy, and I continue the laps faster than even before.

Cool trick I found to make running faster was using my super strength to push off the ground, which makes me run twice as fast as the average human. My father saw this improvement and gave me a thumbs up.

Finally, after two hours more of grueling training including learning how to throw knives and using various other weapons, strength training like lifting weights, and more child abuse, I was free from training.

At last, I would get my sweet, fluffy pancakes that I was promised. I run after my father as we go back to the castle.

We enter the dining hall, which has a long table filled with delicious food. I rush toward the table, forgoing all manners and taking a seat.

In front of me are pastries, freshly baked bread, fresh fruit, and various other breakfast foods.

I thought it couldn't get any better until my father walks up to me with a plate of the fluffiest, best smelling pancakes I've ever seen.

Hmm... maybe this world won't be so bad, I think as a take a bite of the best pancakes I've ever tasted in my life.
