《Against the Gods》2. My Second Life

^^A/N: main character after reincarnation
I wake up in the softest bed I've ever laid in. I'm laying in a queen sized bed with black, silk blankets. Moonlight streams into the room from two windows on the opposite end of room. In between the windows was a fireplace. There is also a large window with a ledge on the left side of the room sandwiched between two bookcases that are stuffed with old, archaic looking books. In the middle of the ceiling is a large black chandelier with teardrop shaped rubies hanging from it, as if it were bleeding. On the right side of the room, was a black, iron vanity with rose designs on it.
I get up from the bed, but when I drop down to the floor, I realize something is wrong. Why am I so close to the ground?
I extend my hands in front of me. They are also incredibly short.
I rush toward the vanity, having to climb the chair in front of it to reach the mirror.
When I look at the mirror, the cutest child I have ever had the fortune of meeting stares back at me. She has shiny, silver hair and red eyes, that shined like gemstones. Her hair had large white satin bows on it and she was wearing a victorian, flowy nightgown. I smiled, and she smiled back to me revealing adorable pointy fangs.
I lift my hand up to wave at her, but notice her mirroring my movements. Wait... she can't be me right?
I lift up a lock my hair, only to see it's silver. My face pales. I look back at the mirror and see that the image is reflecting my every move. I can't be older than five.
This definitely foils my plan to take my revenge on Hal. How can I kill a god when I can't even reach a mirror?
I don't know how, but I know it's somehow that bastard's fault. God is literally conspiring against me.
Just as I'm muttering curses and threats against that son of a b*tch, I hear a chuckle from the other side of the room. I spin around, and see the devil himself sitting on the ledge on the left side of the room.
The moonlight illuminates his white hair, and makes his porcelain skin glow with a silvery light. Disgusting.
Okay fine, he looks even more handsome than usual. How annoying.
"What did you do to me?" I growl at him trying to look as threatening as possible.
Hal laughs, clutching his sides, "Oooo, I'm so scared now!" he says mocking me.
"I'm going to kill you, you son of a b*tch," I say.
"You know, little children shouldn't swear," he replies wagging his finger. I'm tempted to bite off that finger.
"Shut the f*ck up. What did you do to me?" I ask again staring up at him. Ugh, why is he so tall? Now he can both physically and mentally look down on me.
"I told you, you're taking your sister's place. You know she begged me so hard to come to this world. It was quite pathetic actually, hearing her cries," he smirked. He continued in a tone mocking my sister, "One day please, please let me be as happy Helen is. I wish I could go to that world, maybe I'll get a happily ever after too."

I feel a lump form in my throat. How did I not know she was suffering? I thought I shielded her from all the pain. I had thought the dumb games she played are a sign that I had somehow protected her innocence, but no, those games were her means of escape from our sh*tty life.
Hal continues, "So like the benevolent god I am, I tried to grant her wish. I planned to reincarnate her as Eve Callisto, one of the main characters."
Benevolent my ass. Eve Callisto is the villainess of the story and dies in almost every route.
"Why are you doing this?" I ask.
"Goodness of my heart?" he remarks, clasping his chest with a fake innocent expression on his face.
"As if you have a heart," I respond, rolling my eyes. Unfortunately, in this small, weak form, I can't even attempt to hurt him, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be compliant with him. However, no matter what I do, it just seems to make him happier.
I continue, "So you're telling me, you're the god of the world Fantasy Romance Magic Academy. Somehow I can't imagine you creating a light, dreamy romance game."
"Call me a romantic, but yes, the game is based off this world," he replies. There is a mischievous glint in his eyes like there's something he isn't telling me. Hal's probably waiting for my violent demise since I'm the villainess of his stupid game.
"What happens if I die?" I ask. It's a legitimate concern. After all, Eve dies violently at the hands of the male leads after they fall in love with the heroine, Helen.
"Children shouldn't think of such dark thoughts," he smirks while reaching out to pinch my cheek. I snap at his hand like a feral dog as it approaches me, attempting to bite his fingers off if he tries to touch me. Hal withdraws his hand. Good.
He laughs, amused at my insolence, "Well, I wish I could stay and answer all your questions, but I can't just play around all day. Adults have responsibilities," he waves his hand, "Bye bye!"
And with that he disappears.
One day I'm really going to kill that bastard. If I don't die first.
Right, I need to figure out how to not die in this world. I walk toward the vanity where there are some papers and a quill. I dip the quill in an inkwell and start writing everything I can remember about the game.
Fuck. I should have paid more attention to my sister when she was babbling about it.
Okay, let's start with what I know about Eve, the villainess. She was born into the powerful Callisto family. Her father and mother, the duke and duchess, were ruthless. The whole family was pretty violent and were involved in various criminal activities. They had an incredible amount of influence, which was why Eve was a shoo-in for the crown princess position. At the age of fifteen she gets engaged to the crown prince, a year before the story begins.
All her plans were ruined when Helen became a maid in the imperial palace. Helen was from a fallen noble family, the Hales, framed by the Callisto family for treason. Helen's parents were thrown in prison and their titles and assets were taken away. The Callisto family was then granted what the Hale family had lost.

In the game, after Eve begins losing favor with the crown prince as he fell in love with Helen, her family plans to rebel, creating their own kingdom. However, their plans are discovered by one of the male leads and the Callistos are publicly executed, including Eve. After her death, evidence later came to light that the Hale family was framed by the Callisto family so their titles and land are given back to them. This rise in status for the Hale family allows Helen to marry the crown prince and live happily ever after while dancing on my grave. That's just one of the horrible endings the villainess gets. Whichever capture target Helen choses, there is a unique death for Eve.
I sigh, who are the capture targets again? Okay, let's start with the crown prince, Jackson Bourbon. He was blonde with blue eyes. He had a heart of gold, and fell in love with Helen because of her pure heart. He hated Eve because of her thirst for power.
I roll my eyes. What a hypocrite. As if he didn't also thirst for power. He wouldn't marry Helen until she rose to power herself. Why? Because he was concerned about losing the position of crown prince himself if he got married to a maid.
Nobility also had magic in this world. If I remember correctly, the late Queen's family was literally the descendants of angels. Although the crown prince had wings and light magic, he was just descended from angels, not actually one, so he didn't have immortality.
His brother, the second prince, Theodore Bourbon, was the crown prince's half-brother. The king got remarried and had Theodore. Theodore inherited his mother's brown hair and his father's blue eyes.
I don't remember much about Theodore's personality since I wasn't really listening to my sister when she was babbling about the game. I try to think about what powers he had, but can't remember that either.
What I do remember is the horrible death that awaits me on his route. Theodore slowly poisons Eve, so everyone thinks it's sickness when he finds out she bullied the heroine. It was an elaborate plot, with him going as far as to buy all the hospitals in the city just before he poisoned Eve so that when she fell sick from being poisoned, she would be admitted into one of his hospitals. He was then able to send fake doctors in that diagnosed Eve with a chronic disease that had similar symptoms to the poison. Since the fake disease was contagious, nobody could visit Eve, so even when she figured out Theodore poisoned her, she couldn't tell anybody.
She died a painful, long death wasting away in the hospital with only Theodore occasionally visiting her just to watch her suffer. What's worse is Theodore is actually rewarded for murdering Eve, and the Callisto family throws their support behind him since they thought he was taking care of Eve in the hospital. This leads Theodore to rise to power, and become the crown prince instead of Jackson.
I shudder, I definitely don't want to get on his bad side.
I struggle to remember the other male leads. Helen had quite the harem. There was also Fox, the head of the top assassin guild, so he had incredibly strong powers but I can't recall what they were. He had red hair and green eyes. Needless to say, Eve died an incredibly painful death at his hands. He kidnapped her and tortured her for months in the basement of the assassin's guild after discovering she attempted to assassinate Helen. Finally, he killed her and dissolved her body in acid. No matter how hard the Callisto family tried, they couldn't find her or who killed her.
The last male lead was Finn. Finn was a commoner whose parents died at a young age, forcing him to become a beggar. He was actually a magical genius though and had the incredibly rare ability to control people's minds.
Finn began to turn to pickpocketing people as he became more desperate for money. When his powers were just awakening, he wasn't able to fully mind control people since he didn't receive formal training, but he was able to freeze people for about ten second, allowing him to effectively rob them. One day, the king was going undercover in a village near the capital, and Finn tried to pickpocket him. The king then decided to sponsor Finn due to his extraordinary abilities and sent him to the famous Royal Rosewood Academy, where the nobles studied.
Finn kills Eve by mind controlling her to walk into traffic as punishment for bullying Helen in academy. She gets trampled by a carriage, and everyone assumes it was just an unfortunate accident.
Hell no. I don't want a repeat of the truck incident. Ugh, these characters are insane. I'm going to die in this world aren't I? Some bloody, painful horrible death.
Wait a minute! The solution is easy right? All I have to do is not torment Helen or try to increase my power which is what caused the males leads to want to kill me in the first place. Honestly, I have no idea why Eve tried so hard to be the crown princess. I'm already part of the second most powerful family in the whole nation. There's no need to spend so much effort just to be the most powerful. I'm satisfied where I am.
I laugh, probably looking like a crazy person. I've finally beaten that asshole, Hal. I'm just going to ride this golden spoon out, and avoid death while living a life of luxury!
I go back to bed, sleeping peacefully.
Little did I know how wrong I was, because avoiding death was going to be much, much harder than I previously thought.
