The meeting of Zhou Bai and Jian Ci at their wits end made them realize that settling for their best options had actually brought about an even promising future.

將就 (jiāng jiu) translates to reluctantly accepting something and putting up with it. Other phrases that can be used to describe this would be making the best of it, settling for second best, acquiesce…
