《The Puppy Type (OHSHC)》4. Attack of the Psycho Chick

Authentic Japan is the theme of the day, and all of the hosts are wearing kimonos designed by the twins' mom. Daichi is watching carefully as Kyoya writes with a brush and black ink. However, he accidentally touches fresh ink, getting a smudge on his arm.

Both boys freeze. There are tears in Daichi's eyes. He's ready to let loose a stream of apologies, but Kyoya stops him. He takes his brush and uses it to paint around the smudge. When Daichi looks, he sees Kyoya's name on his wrist. His senpai smirks , setting the brush down.

"Nothing I put on this skin could make it prettier, but, well, I couldn't resist marking you as mine."

And Daichi does let loose a tear, causing girls to squeal. Soon however their attention is drawn to a girl in the doorway. Tamaki and the twins try enticing her, but she's having none of it. She hurls insults so easily at Tamaki and it's quite frightening to Daichi.

But then the woman catches Kyoya's eye and rushes to meet him. In her hurry, she pushes Daichi to the side. The boy can do nothing but stare on in surprise. It seems... he should have marked Kyoya.

As the guests leave, that girl stays. Tamaki is growing mushrooms near the wall, and Daichi only sits on the ground behind the couch, glaring holes into the ground

"Your fiancée?"

"Kyoya senpai?"

"Of course," the girl says.

"No," Daichi states bluntly from behind the couch.

"My name is Renge Hoshokuji, and I'm transferring into Ouran academy's 1st-year class A tomorrow."

"Oh ours is a story of love at first sight!" Renge beams. "I couldn't resist the way you were adoring those flowers in the backyard when you thought no one else was looking. And how sweet it was when you reached out to that poor little injured kitten."

"She serious?" the twins ask.

"No," says Daichi.

"Could you have the wrong person?" asks Haruhi.

Finally, Daichi says, "Yes."

"No way!" Renge argues. "I could recognize my love anywhere. He's a gentleman who's kind to everyone and doesn't ask for anything in return. He likes solitude, but in fact sometimes he gets lonely. He looks like the star of the popular dating sim, Uki-doki Memorial. You're my real-life Ichijo Miyabi."

"Uki-"

"doki-"

"Otaku!"

"Otaku?"

"I've never seen one!"

"I get it now," says Kyoya. "You're in love with that character. You're projecting the love onto me, and you somehow deluded yourself into thinking that we're engaged. I assume this Miyabi character probably wears glasses as well. Daichi, would you get off the ground already?"

Slowly the boy gets up and sits next to Kyoya, who instantly starts playing with his collar. He wants to stay mad, but with Kyoya's fingers on his neck, it's so hard.

"So, she made it up," Tamaki asks, looking over nervously. "You're not really her fiancée, right?"

"Well no, I don't remember ever asking for her hand in marriage," Kyoya replies. "Besides this is the first time I've ever met the woman."

Renge then comes over to them. "According to my research, I understand that you are in charge managing the club," she says. "Is that true, Kyoya?"

"That's right," Honey tells her. "Kyo-chan is our director."

"You're the club's director? That's perfect. Oh wow, I've always wanted to wear a sandwich board to advertise a business. I've made up my mind. From now on, I'm gonna be the manager of this host club."

"Senpai," Daichi whines.

"Miss Hoshokuji is the only daughter of a very important Ootori family client. So, please be polite and try not to offend her, all right?" Kyoya asks. Daichi hangs his head but not before letting off a warning growl.

"Well, boys, I can't wait to work with you."

The next day is even more nightmarish. It starts when Renge brings cookies in for the hosts.

"Hey, everyone. You'd be happy to know that your new manager, Renge, has baked all of you some cookies."

Tamaki approaches her with a bright smile and a chipper attitude. "Oh, isn't she lady-like? I'm so moved by your generosity."

"I didn't bake these cookies for you, you phony prince." She walks over to Kyoya. "I'm sorry, I burnt them a little bit. I did the best I could. And I already know what you're going to say."

While she's off in fantasy land, Honey swipes a cookie. "She wasn't kidding, these cookies really are burnt."

"Don't eat that, Mitsukuni," Mori warns. "It's bad for you."

And this causes Renge to turn on them and start chasing them all over. Daichi looks up at Kyoya with apprehension. "Senpai?" he asks.

Kyoya sighs. "You really shouldn't have sweets, but... Since you've done so well lately, you can have a bite of mine."

Kyoya sticks a cookie in his mouth, leaving a small portion poking out. He takes Daichi's chin in his hand, and the younger reaches up biting off the piece. As he chews, Kyoya notices a crumb on the edge of his lip. So, being the nice senpai he is, he leans in and licks it away with a smirk. Of course, being the thieves they are, the twins immediately try this tactic on Haruhi, who isn't at all affected.

"Every single one of you, except for Kyoya, all of your characters are lukewarm!" Renge shouts suddenly. Daichi jumps at the sound of her voice, latching a hand onto Kyoya's jacket.

"Each of you needs to have some sort of dark side. You understand? Girls are vulnerable to handsome young men who are troubled. If you keep carrying on like this, it's only a matter of time before the girls get tired of you and stop coming all together. Are you trying to ruin my precious Kyoya's business?

As your manager, it's my duty to change your character backgrounds. Let's start with you!" She points at Honey, who's already near tears.

"If all you are is cute, inside and out, then you're no different to a baby. Therefore, from now on, you are the baby-faced thug. And Mori-senpai, you're his childhood-friend, the flunky. The twins will be basketball players enslaved in their own world. Haruhi, you're an honor student who's constantly being bullied. Daichi, the whole school is mad at you for breaking up with Kyoya-senpai. And as for you, Tamaki, you're the school idol who's admired for your good looks but you actually have an inferiority complex you're hiding from the world. The lonely prince. And Kyoya, you're perfect just the way you are now. So I want you to stay as kind and affectionate as ever, 'kay?"

Kyoya would be honored if he couldn't see Daichi near tears. As it is, he's very, very angry. He watches as Daichi looks at his wrist. Kyoya.

Daichi watches as the two thug boys come out from behind a tree. They both look like real criminals. "You were supposed to stay with him, you freak," one taunts, flexing his fist. "Because you screwed up, our families aren't friends anymore. Do you know what that means for me? I get nothing to inherit anymore. And it's all your fault!"

Daichi flinches as the fist misses his face only by a centimeter.

"Cut!"

Renge storms out onto the scene in anger. "What was that?! You were supposed to hit him!"

The guy scratches his neck. "I don't want to hit him. Besides Kyoya would kill me."

"My Kyoya would never! You have to make it more realistic! It's in the script!" Renge shouts.

"Can't we change the script?"

"No, I want to see you HIT SOMEONE!"

"You want me to hit someone?!"

Daichi watches again as his fist flies. Only this time, he has to get right in its way and push Renge to the side. It hits him right in his chest, and he can feel each individual ring the kid is wearing. He feels the pain of hitting the tree behind him, the feeling of something tearing, but most importantly the feeling of his head slamming back against the bark.

Daichi falls to his knees. Surprises are more painful than anything else. He can make out Mori and Honey in front of him. Mori picks him up easily bridal style, giving Daichi perfect view of Honey who is on his shoulders. "Kyo-chan told Takashi to help you while he takes care of something. We'll take you to the kendo gym, okay?"

Daichi nods, despite his headache. Mori makes it as quick a walk as possible to the gym. Once they're there, he sets Daichi down on the mats. Honey climbs off next to him, not wanting to leave him alone. It only takes Mori a second to come back with a first-aid kit. "I need to see your back," he says.

Daichi takes off his jacket and shirt, giving more access. The entire time he works Daichi is silent. It's not even ten minutes when Kyoya comes. He thanks Mori and then looks to Daichi. "Let's go home," he says.

Daichi nods and stands, grabbing his shirt and jacket. He bows to Honey and Mori. "Thank you."

And he leaves with Kyoya.

Kyoya knows why his boy is hurting. It's not because he got punched. It was because of Renge's role for him. He was scared of if that would actually if Kyoya were to leave him.

He was scared of Kyoya leaving him.

That night, Kyoya makes sure to hold Daichi very close as they sleep, and he hopes it gets the point across because neither of them are all too good at verbal communication.

The next morning...

Girl: I bought the video of that film you made.

Girl: I bought it too.

Girl: And so did I.

Girl: That scene in the rain was just phenomenal.

Girl: I love the lonely prince.

Girl: And the loving relationship between Hikaru and Kaoru was so sweet.

Girl: I want to see Honey acting like a thug again. He was so cute.

Girl: I couldn't get enough of Haruhi's poignant expressions.

Girl: Imagine if Kyoya and Daichi broke up in real life?! I'm glad it's all acting!

The hosts all turned to Kyoya in confusion. "I may have broken the camera's lens, but the footage that we had already shot wasn't damaged. Naturally, I did cut out that one violent scene. Sales have been pretty good so far. That Hollywood film crew did a fantastic job. But then I guess that's to be expected."

"So, is this what you meant by interesting?" the twins ask.

"It's best to have as much money as we can in the club's budget," says Kyoya.

Just then, Renge walks in. Kyoya instinctively puts his hand on Daichi's thigh.

"Good day, everyone," she says.

"Renge?" Tamaki asks. "But I thought you had gone back to France already."

But Renge isn't leaving. She's here to stay for her love of good-looking boys and androgynous girls.
