It was another Monday of Chemistry lectures, and Bree didn't mind. Taehyung had planned to spend a bit of time with her at the library afterward, which made the mundane routine worthwhile.
The table suddenly started vibrating and Bree looked over at her phone which had her dad's name on display. She rolled her eyes, declining the call. She couldn't remember the last time she had spoken to him but did he really have to call in the middle of class?
It vibrated again and she sighed, turning the phone over.
But then the intercom buzzed, "This is from Student Services, there's an urgent call for Bree Anderson."
She raised her eyebrows and slowly stood up, trying to get down the stairs as quickly and quietly as possible. Making eye contact with Taehyung, she saw him mouth 'You alright?' and she nodded before swiftly leaving the lecture hall. Striding down the hall, she made her way to the Student Services office and took the phone.
"Hello?"
"Bree?" her father's tired voice filled the receiver.
"Yeah, what's up?"
"Bree, it's your mom," his voice cracked.
"Huh? Dad? What's wrong? What about mom? Dad are you alright?"
"She was carrying the shopping in from the car. And then she called me. Which was weird, because why would she call me. I mean she's right outside, isn't she? So why would she pick up her phone and call me. Weird, isn't it?" he was rambling and she heard his voice trembling as he did.
"Dad... What's wrong?"
"Well, I told her it was weird, you know, her calling me and she just said 'help me... I'm bleeding'."
He took a breath so deep it sent nervous tingles down her spine. He rambled when he was scared, and that was how she knew something was really wrong, "One of the bottles had broken and it had cut her leg, she couldn't walk. She... She'd been calling for me but i couldn't hear her. The TV was too loud. I don't know how long she'd been lying there for. She was barely conscious... So I called the ambulance. Bree, she's in hospital. Apparently it was her femoral artery. They... They don't know if she's going to make it."
Bree's eyes welled with tears, her fingers trembling as she gripped on tighter to the phone, "D-Dad."
"Your brother is here but Bree, we need you, please can you come."
"Okay, I'm on my way," she put the phone down and sprinted back to the lecture hall, bursting through the doors and running up to her bag, not really caring what anyone else was thinking of her.
That was when Taehyung stopped teaching and directed the attention to her, "Bree, is there something wrong?"
"I'm sorry, Prof, I have to go, it's my mom," she let out before rushing through the door.
"Bree," she heard his voice behind her and she turned around.
"I'm sorry, I really have to go, my mom's in hospital and they-" she choked on her tears, "they don't know if she's going to make it."

"Where's your mom?" he asked and she told him the name of their hospital in her home town.
"Okay, but I'm not letting you drive out like this," he turned his head and yelled through the lecture hall, "Do pages 300-320, class dismissed!"
"Tae you can't just-"
Then he grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the building.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The drive there was silent and so was the sprint to her mother's hospital room. When she got there, however, she threw the doors open and ran to her bedside.
Two doctors stood at her feet and were explaining something to Bree's father and she looked up to listen.
"She's lost a lot of blood and she's O negative, it's so rare we actually don't have any, we're going to have to ship it from-"
"I'm an O negative," a voice emerged from the door, "I'll give her my blood."
"Tae..."
"Is that alright with you?" one doctor asked Bree's father and he gave Bree a look of confusion.
"Uh... this is-"
"As long as he's compatible," her father interrupted, looking over at Taehyung.
His gaze was trained on the doctors and they nodded, "Alright, let's set up a transfusion after checking compatibility, come with us please."
"Tae-" Bree grabbed onto his arm and he gave her a weak smile.
"Go sit with your dad, I'll be right back," he whispered before following the doctors out.
"How long has she been unconscious for?" she asked, sitting down next to her brother.
"Around five h-hours," he hiccupped, turning to her, "Bree... I'm scared."
She slipped her hand through his, giving it a squeeze, "Me too."
After the doctors had confirmed Taehyung's blood was compatible with her mother's, they set up the transfusion and Bree went to sit next to him.
"Tae, you really – thank you – you don't-"
"Shhh," he hushed her, taking her hand in his free one, it was all done, the blood was now being pumped from him into her mother. "Morphine."
"Huh?"
"Morphine," he said again, this time gestures at the shelf, "Tell me what morphine is."
"Uh C17H19NO3."
"Good. Epinephrine."
"C9H13NO3."
"Diphenhydramine."
"C17H21NO3."
"No, close though, C17H21NO."
She sighed, blinking back the tears that had just threatened to fall again, causing Taehyung to squeeze her hand tighter, "Bree wh-"
He was cut off by some loud gasps and cries. She whipped her head around to see her mother opening her eyes slowly.
"Mom!"
"Are you okay?"
The reactions by the doctors were also assuring as Bree heard one whisper to the other, "Okay we gotta start on the surgery, get it ready."
A small smile appeared on her face as she let go of Taehyung's hand and sat at her bedside.
"You came," she whispered, looking over at her dad.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't know – I didn't hear yo-"
"It's alright, you came," slowly turning her head, she saw Bree and her brother. "And you're both here too, the whole family's here."

Her eyes gradually stopped blinking and then they were closed again.
"Mom!"
Bree looked over at the doctors expectantly and they carefully disconnected the wire from Taehyung and her mother before wheeling her out, the congregation closely following.
"What's happening?"
"Now that she's got enough blood in her, we're going to perform her surgery, we need to go it as quick as possible, the longer we delay, the greater the risk."
"Okay, please, do it right away," he was desperate, looking at them with water filling his eyes.
That was when the doctors entered the surgery room, leaving the rest of her family behind it. Bree's legs gave way, falling to the floor, she looked down and bit her lip as she tried not to cry.
"Mom," she whispered, "You need to be alright."
"She will," another voice whispered and she felt an arm around her back, "She'll be alright."
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
For the next few hours, Bree and her family were outside the surgical room, her father pacing up and down, her brother on the seat with Bree on the seat on the other side of the corridor. Taehyung came back, handing them each a coffee and a protein bar, telling them all that they needed to eat or else their own health was going to be at risk, before sliding in next to Bree.
"Are you alright?" he said softly, taking her hand in his.
"I need norepinephrine and serotonin," she breathed, concentrating on blowing her lungs up as big as she could just like he had told her to a few minutes before.
"I'll try but, you know, it's your brain that has to produce them."
"Fine," she rolled her eyes, "Anything with a hydroxyl group."
"Here," he took his bottled water and gave it to her, "It's bonded to a proton."
That made her laugh a little.
"Hey, I think that was some norepinephrine."
And she laughed a little again.
"It's going to be okay, Bree, I promise."
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
They had been informed it was a successful surgery, but she had to stay inside for another hour or so as they so the post-procedure touch ups. Taehyung looked around the hallway to smile over at Bree, but couldn't find her anywhere.
"Bree?"
Her father looked over at him, "Where is she?"
"I-I'm not sure? I'll go have a look," he turned and paced to the balcony overlooking the cafeteria and scanned it. Nope.
Rushing to the reception area, he checked it and she wasn't in sight.
He only had one other place as an option and so he headed to the stairs, running up them, he flung the roof doors open.
There she was, standing at the end, her hands on her hips as she looked to the distance.
Closing his eyes and heaving a sigh of relief, he took his time walking over to her, trying to catch his breath.
"So this is where you were."
She turned around, her cheeks tear stained and her eyes blood red.
"Tae..."
"Come here," he whispered, wrapping his arms around her and pulling on her tight.
"Tae-" her voice was muffled in his sweater, "Tae I'm such a bad daughter."
"Why are you saying that? None of this is your fault."
"I only have a few recent memories with her, Tae, and they're all of us arguing, and me being a real bitch. I can't believe-"
"Shhh," he rubbed her back, "That's what children are meant to be, a real pain in the ass to their parents, don't blame yourself."
"Bu-"
"And besides, you can just make new memories from now on."
Her head shot up from his grasp and she looked at him.
"We don't know if-"
"Ahhh, that's right, you missed the good news."
"What good news?"
"The surgery was successful, your mom's okay."
"She is?" her eyes filled with tears again, "She's really okay?"
"She is," he nodded, wiping at her falling tears, "So you gotta get in there and give her the biggest hug, alright?"
"Thank you, so much Tae," her crying could not be stopped, but she didn't try.
"Why are you thanking me? It's the doctors who saved her."
"It's only been a few hours and yet you've helped my whole family so much," she smiled, "You gave your frikin' blood to my mom, is that not something I have to be thankful for?"
"Well, I just didn't want you to... lose her," his smile faltered. "No one deserves that."
She tiptoed, pecking him ever so quickly on the lips, taking him by surprise.
"Thank you again, I honestly don't think I could ever repay you for this."
"Okay let's talk about this later and go to your mom," he took her hand and led her back to the roof entrance, "C'mon."
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
That was how Taehyung met Bree's parents, and although it was not a favourable visit, it was a memorable one.
Whenever her mother saw him, she would gush about how that gorgeous boy's blood was inside of her and how blessed she was to have him there to help her out.
And every time he would tell her that it was no problem and that anyone else would have done the same thing, he was no superhero.
But he was Bree's.
Now that the whole class basically knew there was something up, she would get the weirdest looks when waiting at the end of the lectures for him. She didn't care, though, because the look that the man standing in front was giving her was all that mattered to her.
That smile, that hair, those arms folded over his chest.
That person was all that mattered to her.
"Library?" he asked, lunging forward and taking Bree's hand in his before walking to the exit together.
Ever since that incident, they knew they shared something more, and Bree really was starting to think that maybe, just maybe, she loved her chemistry professor.
