《Call Of Death》Chapter 74 : Connection 2

After the meeting ended, Cameron went straight to his apartment. He sat down the chair in exhaustion. He sighed and picked up his phone, he checked if anything was sent to him but there was nothing — not even a single message. Going back to his apartment, he was supposed to be resting but his mind is roaming somewhere else. He couldn't calm his system as he kept thinking about the safety of Officer Devius Chad, Gong Seuk Tae and his colleague, Detective Kairo Parler. Sitting there, waiting for his superior's order and doing nothing is driving him crazy. He wanted to look for them, but where?
After some time, he got up from his seat and went to the bathroom to take a bath. The cold water was dripping down his body but it didn't washed up the feeling of anxiousness he has. He let out a really deep breath before turning off the shower and drying himself. He changed into his usual attire and put his gun in it's holder before heading out of the apartment again. When he opened the door, he was surprised to see that his adopted father, Harold Lee was standing in front of his apartment.
"Camz."
"Dad, you need something?" He forcibly smiled to his father as ye asked the question.
Harold smiled back. "Can you come with me? I have to show you something."
Detective Lee furrowed his brows and asked. "What is it?"
"Just come with me and I'll tell you everything you need to know." Harold patted his son's shoulder and turned his back.
Cameron watch his father walk away before following him downstairs and to the car. He was confused but he trust his adopted father. He let Harold drive and take him to wherever he wanted to be a he couldn't concentrate and he doesn't want to cause any accident for the two of them. Detective Lee has too much in mind that he didn't even notice the familiar road his father was heading.
When Cameron felt that the car had stopped and they finally arrived, he lifted his head and saw the familiar building. He furrowed his brows and confusedly looked at Harold.
"Dad, what are we doing here?" He asked.
Harold got out of the car and opened the door for him. "Come down, I have to tell you something." He said.
Detective Lee was confused but he still did what his father said. "Why are we here? Why did you bring me here, dad?" He asked again.
"Camz, I used to be a detective and you know that, right?"
"Uh, yeah? What about that?" Detective Lee answered, still confused.
Harold sighed. "Do you want to know why I suddenly disappeared?"
"It's because of your last mission. You told me before that you have one last mission before you retire, which you never never told me what, and that you have to complete it and you never came back." Cameron responded.
His father nodded. "I lied, Camz. I never had a mission before I vanished. I just wanted to run from everything. I wanted to run from guilt."
"What do you mean? I don't understand, dad." Cameron turned to him.
"This place is my last mission." Harold looked at the burnt down building. "My last task was to save the kid kept from this building. He was kidnapped right before he was born. He never had the chance to see his parents nor say their names." He continued, Cameron just stared at his adopted father, he couldn't utter a single word. "They gave me the case because I was once like you. My colleagues look up to me because I'm one of the greatest in my profession. I never failed in solving cases. It was hard but I never gave up. My superior thought I'll be able to save the little boy but it took us seven years to locate his whereabouts and our investigation took us to this place." Harold started walking but he stopped after a meter distance.

"Dad..."
"My team were celebrating, I was so happy because I thought I could finally save the boy. I thought my hard works will finally be paid of." Harold stopped and turned to Cameron, his eyes were full of guilt and Detective Lee could feel the pain his adopted father has been hiding inside his heart for such a long time. "But I celebrated too early and came here late. When we arrived right here, at this place, it was already burning down. Sara's father managed to save one boy but the kid whom I was looking forward on meeting perished and was devoured by the flames of the burning basement."
Cameron held his head because it started aching again. "Dad, I... I'm so confused."
"Sara's father, Robert Simon, was my partner at that time. He arrived at this place earlier than me and he managed to save one boy but he saw as the other one was eaten by the monstrous fire."
"Dad..."
"Camz, that boy was Lee Han Se. It was you who Robert saved. Lee Jin Hong died from the fire and even if his body was never found, I know that he died. It was my fault, I should've went here earlier and saved that little boy." A drop of tear came out of Harold's eyes.
Cameron couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Y-You mean, you know what happened at this place?"
Harold nodded. "I felt so guilty. I couldn't sleep at night, I was hearing that boy's voice calling for help. I always had a nightmare about the fire. I was slowly being eaten alive by my conscience so I decided to adopt you. I thought by doing that, I could finally live in peace but I was wrong, Camz."
"So, you left me? You just disappeared after making me believed that even if the world is cruel, there's one person I could trust. After saving me from my misery, you just left me alone and worst, you made me believe that you were dead!" Cameron felt so betrayed.
"Camz—"
"You took me in not because you cared for me. You adopted me because you wanted to get rid of your guilty conscience. You made me believe that you truly care for me when in reality, I'm just a tool for you." Saying those words hurts Cameron more than anything in the world.
He trusted Harold. He treated him like his own father. He never gave up when he disappeared, he was even willing to give up everything just yo look for him and this is what he gets in return?
"Cameron, please listen to me first." Harold begged.
"For what? So you could fool me again, dad?"
"No, just listen to me. I truly care for you. I treated you like my own and I love you like my own, Camz. Even if I disappeared from your sight, I never left your side. I'm always watching you." He explained.
"That's so unfair, dad. Why didn't you tell me everything? Why do you have to lie to me? You do have the chance to look at me and watch me from a far while I'm here, looking stupid because I kept looking for you when you were just around?"
"Camz..."
"I trusted you, dad. I never knew that I was just a tool so you could ease your guilt. I wish I never knew because it breaks my heart finding out that the person whom I cared the most see me nothing more than just a charity case."

"Son—"
"I wished Lee Jin Hong survived. I wish I was the one who got eaten by the fire. So I wouldn't have to live and find out all about these. It hurts, it hurts so bad, dad." Cameron's heart was breaking, tears started streaming down his face.
He wasn't mad but he's badly hurting. He felt like his adopted father, the person whom he first ever trusted betrayed him. He felt like Harold would choose to save Lee Jin Hong than him. Knowing everything hurts. He knew that Lee Jin Hong was the kid in his memory, the kid who saved him from the fire. Even if his memory was blurred, he knew who exactly was his adopted father is talking about. Detective Lee turned his back and was about to leave but he felt Harold's hand on his wrist.
"Cameron... Son..."
"Dad, please, just let me go." He said without turning.
"I love you like my own. I watch you grow, I taught you everything I know. You're my son." Harold sincerely said.
"I know that, dad. I know you genuinely care for me but for now, just let me go. I wanted some space to think. I'm happy that you're back, alive and safe but after hearing everything... I just need some time to think." He mumbled, Harold let go of his hand.
"Just promise me that you will call me if something come up. Please, Camz." Detective Lee just nodded and started walking away.
Tears are streaming down Cameron's face while he was walking. He couldn't explain what exactly is he feeling. He's confused, hurt and annoyed. He took a taxi and went back to his apartment. When he got in, he took the photo inside his drawer. It was the photo of the three kids standing side by side. He doesn't know how the photo was shot because as far as he can remember, they were always inside the basement.
"If Lee Jin Hong was the kid who saved me, who was the other boy?" Cameron asked while looking at the photo, confused.
Cameron closed his eyes and leaned his back on the chair. He fell asleep with the photo in his hand. While he was asleep, Harold came back. He entered the apartment and saw his adopted son, sleeping. Harold smiled sadly. He carefully walked towards Cameron and caressed his hair. When he looked at his hand, he saw the photo he was holding. Harold took it and furrowed his brows when he noticed the familiar background.
"Why does Han Se have this photo? There were three kids? How did that happen?" He asked in confusion.
He looked at his sleeping son. He knows the photo because he have the same one before but there were only two boys there. Harold hurriedly left the apartment after leaving a note and used his taxi to go to his place. He knew he had the exact same photo but there were only two boy in there. He doesn't know how the photo ended up in Cameron's hand but Harold knows something isn't right.
When Cameron woke up, he looked for the photo but he couldn't find it because Harold took it without his knowledge. After looking for half an hour, he sat down, full of confusion. When he looked at table, he saw his car keys lying there. Detective Lee stood up and saw that there was a note beside it.
Camz, daddy made a mistake for not telling you the truth earlier. But choosing you as my son and being a father to you was the best thing I did in my entire life. I might not have succeeded in saving Lee Jin Hong, I might not have succeeded in completing my mission, I'll be forever thankful to Robert because he saved you. I'm sorry because I was a coward for leaving you out of my guilt but always remember, you are my son and no one can ever replace you in my heart. I want you to be happy, Cameron. Do what you have to do, son. I will always be behind your back.
Reading the letter helped Cameron made up his mind that he wouldn't just sit there and do nothing while the people he cherish are in danger. He couldn't stand the fact that three people's lives are at risk this time. His father's words gave him courage. Detective Lee hurriedly went out, hopped inside his car and took out his phone. He started dialing Red's number and he didn't fail as the call immediately got picked up the moment it rung, it's as if Red's been waiting for his call all this time.
"Oh. Detective, did you miss me that much that you couldn't wait for me to call you and you called me instead?" Red's teasing voice came from the other line.
Cameron could feel his heart pounding. "If you want something from me, just say so. Don't dragged someone else if I'm the only one you needed." He said.
Red chuckled. "That wouldn't be fun if I follow as you said. Seeing you suffer mentally is better than punishing you physically. I would love to see your reaction once I send you your lover's head, Detective Lee." His voice doesn't even sound guilty.
"Don't you dare hurt Devius or any of them. I know you have Gong Seuk Tae and Parker, if you ever lay your fingers on them, I'll make sure to send you to hell." He threatened but Red only laughed at him as if he just told him the funniest joke in the whole wide universe.
"Detective, don't look too high on me. Do you really think I am that capable?" He laughed.
"Red or whoever you are, I'm not playing with you. I swear, if you touch them, I'll forget that I am a man of the law. I will unalive you." Detective Lee seriously said.
The other line became silent before Red's voice was heard again. "You can kill me once we met, Detective but I never abducted your friend, Kairo Sedis Parker neither do I have Gong Seuk Tae." He said in a serious tone.
Detective Lee got confused for a while. He was thinking, if Red really doesn't have Gong Seuk Tae and Detective Parker, then where are they? He sighed and gripped on the steering wheel.
"I don't believe you. If you want to meet me, then let's meet. If you have something against me, I'm willing to take it. But don't ever hurt Devius because if you do, I'll make sure that you'll pay for it."
"Aw. That's scary but don't you remember the blood on that piece of cloth you found at the abandoned building?" Red's voice turned back into his teasing tone again.
"RED! YOU BASTARD!" Cameron shouted but Red only laughed.
"But don't worry, he's still alive... well, for now, I'm not sure about later or tomorrow."
"You!"
"Let me ask you something, Detective. Do you really want to meet up with me? Aren't you scared at all?" Red asked.
Detective Lee gritted his teeth. "Why would I be afraid of such coward like you who knows nothing but hide, huh? Why would I be afraid of someone who's hiding?" He challenged him.
Red giggled. "To prove that I'm not a coward, I'll give you a clue to where am I right now. I'm at the place you never wanted to return ever."
"What?" Detective Lee furrowed his brows. "What are you talking about?"
"If that abandoned place was your nightmare, this place, where I am staying right now with the person you are looking for... it's where your so-called misery continued. If you still couldn't get it, then I couldn't do anything anymore but send your beloved boyfriend's head to you tomorrow with the exact." After saying that, Red laughed and cut the call.
"Red! Hello? Hello!"
Detective Lee was left confused. 'Where the hell is that place?'
He doesn't know why Red seemed to know a lot about him. His childhood, everything that happened, Red seemed to have known it all. He leaned his head on the seat and sighed. He tried thinking of the place he went when he was still a kid. The abandoned basement, the orphanage...
"Wait, the orphanage..." He mumbled as if he just got an idea. "Could he be... at the orphanage?" He asked himself and without thinking twice, he hit on the gas and headed to the orphanage.
It was a bit of a long drive before he could reach his destination. Inside him, thoughts were building up in an unbelievable speed. Just thinking of the place is making him sick. All the experience he had in that place was not pleasant at all. He doesn't wanna come back to that place anymore if possible but thinking about Devius, Detective Parker and Gong Seuk Tae, he knew he had to. His fear is less important than those people's lives, especially when it's Officer Chad. Maybe it's because he had fallen hard with him that he was willing to take all the risk and face his fears in order to save Devius from Red's grip.
