《Call Of Death》Chapter 47 : I Can Prove It

Cameron ended up finding himself sitting in front of his car, a bottle of beer in his hand in the river, looking up at the sky. The wind is blowing cold breezes as it plays with his hair. The vast sky is full of stars, twinkling and shining like little diamonds. He felt dizzy due to the alcohol's effect on his system. He wasn't a good drinker so he easily gets drunk. But like other people, liquor is the only thing he could run for in times where he find everything hard. He was just sitting there, on his car's front. All the thoughts, the emotions, the questions he has in mind, everything just made him confused.
He could feel his phone vibrating many times since earlier but he just chose to ignore it. He didn't even try to check who was calling. He doesn't care. He wanted a break from everything. He needed a break from everything.
Cameron was planning to spend the whole day on the bar but he wasn't a fan of noisy places so he went out and he bought some beer before heading to the place where he's in now. He started drinking and thinking about the things he wanted to forget. Recalling the memories he wanted to erase—his childhood. He was still holding the bloody handkerchief on his hand. Caressing the name embroidered in it. It's been a long time. He tried hard to forget those painful, scary memories but now it's back and so with his nightmares.
The name Lee Jin Hong has been bothering him. Red's words about taking his life from him made him wonder more. Questions begun flooding in his mind. What was Red's connection to culprit and the murders? Does Red know him? Why does Red's voice sounds really familiar? Who is Lee Jin Hong? Why did he dreamt about that name? What is his connection to this guy? Cameron sighed as he quaffed his beer.
He looked down at the handkerchief in his hand. His caress the name embroidered in it as he recall the same handkerchief he used to possess back in that nightmarish place.
"I thought I could escape from my past after I escaped that miserable place, it turns out that I'll always get chased and there's no place to run nor hide." He mumbled, staring at the bloody thing in his hand.
"Young man, you seemed really troubled." An old man spoke beside him, Cameron stared at him, he didn't even noticed that someone had walk towards his direction.

"I guess so." He sighed.
The old man smiled. "Well, I didn't mean to overhear you speaking to yourself earlier. Do you mind if I give you some advice?"
"Yeah, sure. I won't lose anything if I listen to what you have to say." Detective Lee shrugged.
"Well, you seemed bothered by your past and you tried running away from it."
"Perhaps, that's what I was tried to do."
"Young man, running away sometimes only make it worst. There are things that you need to face in order to escape from it. You have to face what you're running away from, in that way, you'll be able to escape from it." The old man said in a long litany.
"It's easy to say but hard to do." Detective Lee shook his head.
The old man smiled. "Face it and fight it. That's the only way you can escape the things you are running away from. Pain doesn't make us weak, it makes us stronger but if you let it stay... it'll only devour you, little by little, slowly. Just believe that you can defeat your fears and pain, I assure you, you will not have to run anymore." The man said in a very assuring voice.
Cameron wanted to believe that it's possible but facing the things he was trying to escape is like facing his death. If he had a choice, he would rather run away all his life, chase a heaven that he doesn't even know if it truly exist than facing the hell behind.
"Young man, if you're scared to face it alone. I'm sure someone is willing to hold your hand and face it with you. There will always be someone who's willing to stay with us in times like this. Those are the people who truly cares for us." The old man uttered and for a reason unknown, Devius was the first person who came into his mind.
'Why the hell am I thinking about him?'
Cameron shook his head and smiled. "But will he accept me once I let him see through my past, mister? Will he be able to accept my miserable past once I started telling him my story?" A sense of disappointment could be felt in his voice
"If that person cherishes you a lot, he wouldn't mind even if he finds out your the devil yourself. You only have to trust that person and you will see." The old man patted Detective Lee's shoulder. "I have to get going now. Trust my words, young man. I may not be sane to some people but everything that I said, I have proven it in my life time. Just trust that person and he will always be beside you." Said the old man before walking away with a smile.

Cameron fell silent. He watched as the man's shadow slowly fades away from the distance. He took a deep breath and gulped on some beer beside him. He already felt dizzy but he couldn't stop drinking. He wanted the alcohol to wash away all his worry, all the confusion but it's really impossible. For now, forgetting everything in his mind is the most impossible thing for him. He stayed there for a while before deciding to go home. Fortunately, the road was clear of traffic so he has no reason to care about his surroundings.
"Cai, thank goodness, you're back! Are you alright? Where have you been? I was so worried about you. Why didn't you answer any of my calls?" Officer Chad's worried voice greeted Cameron the moment he opened the apartment's door.
"Shush! You're so noisy, I feel tired." Cameron said in his drunken voice, slumming his body on the chair.
Devius stared at him for a moment. Seeing his partner drunk like this is new for him. He knows that Detective Lee doesn't drink unless he is with him or it's the call for his job. He looks so tired and stressed. When he turned to his hand, Officer Chad spotted the handkerchief he was holding. From that, he got a hint of his partner's behavior.
"Cai, what really is happening with you?" He queried.
"Nothing, Chad." Detective Lee answered with a tired voice.
"It isn't nothing. Something's not right with you, I can see it right now."
"I said it's nothing."
"Is it about the handkerchief? Why are you so affected by it? Who's name is written in that? Why did you reacted like that? Am I missing something?" Devius sat beside him, asking several questions.
Detective Lee took a deep breath, closed his eyes and rested his head on the chair. "I don't want to talk about it. Chad, just please, please stop asking." He mumbled with a sigh.
"But, Cai, I'm just worried about you. I am confused about your action. I don't know what's happening." Officer Chad whispered.
"Why are you worried about me? Why do you care so much about me?" He calmly questioned.
Officer Devius Chad stared at his partner before saying, "Do you really have to ask that? Of course, I'll be worried. Cai, I already told you how I feel about you, did you forget?"
"Devius Wayne Chad," Cameron sat up straight, looking directly at the man beside him. "Do you really like me? Loke, for real?"
"You want me to say it again, Cai?"
"No, I just want you to be honest with me. Do you really feel that way towards me? Can I really trust your words?" He asked.
"Cai..."
"You've just been with me for a short period of time. You don't even know a single thing about me. Aside from the fact that we're both men, you don't even know my past." Detective Lee stated, looking straightly into Devius' eyes.
Officer Chad smiled and place his hands on both of his partner's shoulder. "I don't care, Cai. I love you in whole, that includes your past, your present and your future. If you have a terrible past, I don't care about it, I don't care about who you are. I like you and that's the only thing that matters to me now." He sincerely said.
"How can I believe you when you like playing around? How can I trust that you will accept me as I am? What if once you find out my past, you'll toss me away like a trash?" Detective Lee asked in a serious tone.
Devius just sighed watching his partner act that way. "Why can't you trust what I say, Cai? Why can't you trust how I feel? Was I wrong for confessing my feelings for you?"
"I don't know. Maybe because I've never trusted anyone before? Maybe your confession made me more doubtful?"
"Cai, I like you and I can prove it to you. I will do anything just to make you believe that everything I said was true."
Seeing how honest Officer Chad is, Cameron was left speechless. Thinking about what the things that man had said to him earlier. He wanted to believe that Devius will accept his past but he was still hesitant. No matter how hard he tries, he just couldn't fully trust this man who kept telling him that he likes him. He doesn't know if it because he never trusted anyone before or if it's because he does trust himself. Without saying anything, Cameron stood up and walked towards his bed. He lied down on it and fell asleep.

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
