《Call Of Death》Chapter 20 : An Awkward Mistake

When they got home, Detective Lee went straight to his bed and sat there. He feels upset for some reason. He's annoyed towards his partner whom he thinks jokes around about serious matters. While Officer Chad rested for a while before going to the bathroom to take some shower. The cold water are washing away the dirt on his body, it couldn't wash away the worry in Devius' heart. He's worried about his sister's safety, he's worried about their parents. He's even more worried that the culprit will come when he isn't ready. Also, he's worried about Cameron finding out that he didn't joked around earlier because he really is the next victim.
In the room, Detective Cameron Lee was staring at the bathroom's door, as if he was seeing through it. He really felt that Devius Chad's expression earlier was genuine but he couldn't really tell.
'Someone like him who often jokes around are hard to read when they're being serious or not. Suck a pain in the ass.'
He sighed and stood up. He walked to the refrigerator to get some water and saw some canned beer placed in there.
"Tss! What an alcoholic." He mumbled while looking at the bathroom's direction.
Detective Lee took the jar of water, put some on a glass and returned the jar back before drinking his water. Moments later, Officer Chad went out the bathroom, drying his hair with a piece of cloth. He's topless and he only has a towel wrapped around his waist exposing his still wet chest. Cameron unconsciously stared at him. This was the first time he saw him half naked.
'Dang! This boy has some good features.' Detective Lee thought.
He felt something raising in his throat so he swallowed hard but still couldn't look away. Maybe because it's the first time he saw someone half naked in front of him, in the same room. Even if he's a man, he's not used to it. Devius noticed it and glanced at him, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Are you not going to drink your water and take a shower too?" He asked, that's when Cameron came to his senses and shifted his gaze into another direction.
"Uh...Yeah. I'm going to take a shower then." He quickly stood up and placed the glass on the table before running towards the bathroom.
Devius followed him with his eyes, scratching the back of his head in confusion. Officer Chad just shrugged his shoulder and begun dressing up. After drying his hair, he went to the refrigerator and took one can of beer. He opened it and begun gulping.

He sat on the chair with his beer. He checked his phone and stared at his call history. Looking at the unknown numbers and those strange calls drive him to confusion.
"How could I make them safe if I get them involved?" He whispered, thinking about the call he received earlier.
He drunk all that's left inside the can and rested his head backwards. He closed his eyes and sighed. That's when Detective Cameron Lee came out of the bathroom. He was wearing a sweatpants which he often left inside the bathroom. His hair was wet, water dripping down his chest because he didn't get to take a towel with him into the bathroom.
"Hey, I have a question for you." Cameron asked while closing the bathroom door.
"Hmm?" Devius hummed.
"Why do you always drink? You stock a lot of beer inside my refrigerator." He said to Officer Chad as he was walking towards his bed.
"Alcohol makes me calm. It helps me ease my mood when I'm not feeling good emotionally and mentally. I won't force you to drink, so don't worry." Officer Chad answered without opening his eyes.
Detective Lee glanced at him. "I won't drink either."
Devius chuckled. "Of course, you won't."
"But, you still seemed troubled after drinking, why don't you tell me anything?" He asked.
Devius sat up properly, staring at the man in front of him. "You looked bothered too, but you're not saying anything." He talked back instead of answering the question.
Cameron chuckled, "Let's have a deal, then. Are you in?" He suggested.
Devius stared at him, "Sure, senior. Count me in. What is it?" He agreed.
Cameron stood up, walked towards the refrigerator and took out all the beer inside. He then went beside Devius, placing the beer on the table before sitting.
"I'm not a fan of alcohol because I easily get drunk." He said.
"And?"
"Also, I don't know what kind of person I am when I'm drunk."
"So?"
"Tonight, let's be open to each other." He added.
"Can you get to the point, senior?" Devius raised his eyebrow.
Detective Lee sighed. "I'm saying let's have a drink and tell each other about what he have in our minds."
Cameron was planning to get Devius drunk so he could squeeze some information out from him. Little did he know that the other guy has the same plan as him.
"So?"
"Okay, I'm in, senior. A night of openness, cool." Devius opened one can and handed it to Cameron before doing his own.

Just as when he was about to gulp his beer, Cameron's phone that was placed on the table suddenly vibrated. They both looked at it and Devius suddenly felt worried after seeing the number flashed on the screen. It was the same number that the culprit has been using to contact him.
"Wait a second, I'll just answer it—"
"No!" He unconsciously held Cameron's hand to stop him, the other guy turned to him with confusion.
"What? Why?" He asked.
Devius just stared at him, not knowing what to say. He slowly let go of the detective's hand as the vibrating sound went into silence. Cameron became suspicious but he can't figure out what was wrong. In addition to that, he also cannot ask his partner because he knew that Devius would not tell him. He just stared at Devius who was now gulping his beer. He glanced at his phone again but the screen was now blank.
'Devius Chad, what are you hiding?'
He sat on his chair and faced his partner. "What is wrong?" He asked but Officer Chad won't just say anything.
He couldn't think of anything to say. He just stayed silent, drinking his beer. He just kept staring at the can on his hand. He wasn't scared but he's definitely worried. He's not sure about what could happen if Cameron answered the phone. Devius isn't scared for himself because he know he can protect himself but he's scared for everyone around him, especially his sister and his partner. For some reason, he doesn't want Cameron to talk to culprit. Inside him, he wanted to protect the guy but he doesn't know from whom or from what.
Devius'expression is calm but inside him, he was very anxious. Maybe he is panicking yet he couldn't tell. Then, he heard the phone vibrate again. His heart started pounding and he is trying to think of something that would stop the detective from answering it.
"I'll just answer it, let's talk later." Detective Lee stood up and was about to pick up his phone.
"Senior, I think I'm in love with you!" He said that in panicked, he couldn't think of anything else to say that could stop Cameron from answering the call.
'Fuck! What the hell did I just said?' He regretted.
Cameron stared at him, not being able to process what he just heard. His hand was halfway reaching the phone that kept in vibrating but the words that came out of Devius' mouth made him unable to move a muscle. He thought that he was just hallucinating but he hadn't took a single sip of alcohol yet.
"W-What did you just say?" He hesitantly asked.
Officer Chad wanted to take back what he said but he just couldn't. He wanted to punch his face for shouting those words without thinking. He just wanted to stop Cameron from talking with that person but he didn't think that those goddamn words would come out of his mouth.
"Hey, Chad, I'm talking to you. What did you just said?" Cameron repeated.
"I...I said it already." He pierced his lips and lowered his head.
"Are you...are you drunk?" Cameron asked in disbelief.
Devius lifted his gaze to see the shocked expression of Cameron. He didn't know that the detective would believe him.
"M-Maybe. Maybe I'm drunk and the alcohol in my system forced me to be honest." He has to stand up for what he said earlier.
Detective Lee stared at him, trying to figure out if he's really serious. Devius tried his best to fight Cameron's eyes even if he badly wanted to look away. They looked at each other seriously until one gave up. After staring at each other for a while, Cameron couldn't take it anymore so he broke the connection and sat down.
"Officer Chad, I'm..." He wanted to speak but he doesn't know what to say.
"Ahh! Nevermind, let's just get drunk and forget this awkward mistake I made." Devius wanted to get rid of the awkwardness he caused.
"What?"
"Detective Lee, let's just forget what happened." He said as he sat down and started gulping a can of beer again.
"I cannot believe you. You told me you like me out of the blue and now you wanted to forget everything." Cameron uttered.
Devius turned to him with his usually cheery expression. "I don't mind if you forget it. I just told you accidentally and it seemed like you're not interested in me, so just forget it." He stated.
'Please forget it.' Devius wished.
In his mind, he really wanted Cameron to forget his embarrassing mistake. He didn't mean what he said, he just spoke without thinking because he doesn't want his partner to answer the call but for Cameron, he couldn't just ignore and forget about it but he's also embarrassed to repeatedly talk about it.
