《Call Of Death》Chapter 16 : A Warning?

It's been an hour since their last conversation with Chief Simon but Devius couldn't still calm his mind. Cameron is also devoured by his thoughts about the case. Both Detective Lee and Officer Chad are sitting on their assigned desk while Chief Simon was leaning on the wall, watching her juniors and colleagues do their jobs. Everything was quiet because everyone one is focused on what they are doing. Even a needle falling could possibly be heard. But the moment of silence was ruined when Detective Kairo Sedis Parker came rushing inside the headquarters. He went outside earlier for further investigation because he was also partially involved in solving the case. They all look at him with confusion and curiosity.
"Detective Parker, what is it?" Chief Simon asked, standing properly.
He swallowed hard while panting before answering, "I got a call...from an anonymous caller saying there are some witness who could tell us the whereabouts of the culprit."
After hearing that, the three all stood up and looked at each other while the other detectives just went back to their respective works. Detective Parker marched towards them and handed them a paper. Written there is the address of some witnesses according to the anonymous caller.
"Are you sure about that, Parker?" Chief Simon questioned, furrowing her brows.
"Yes, Chief. I talked to the person who gave me those address personally. I can assure you that it's positive." Kairo confirmed.
"Detective Lee and Officer Chad, you meet with the witnesses and go to the given place, I and Detective Parker will also investigate." She commanded the two.
Cameron and Devius both nodded and gave her a salute. "Yes, Chief." Detective Lee answered.
"We'll do our best, Chief Simon. Let's go." Said Officer Chad and then they both walked out of the headquarters.
There are two addresses written on the paper. Detective Lee is the one driving while Officer Chad was looking at the piece of paper. The nearest address was a bit far from the headquarters' current location. Fortunately, there was no traffic and they were faster to get to their destination. When they arrived at the place, Detective Lee immediately knocked on the door and an elderly woman greeted them with a smile.
"Good day. What can I do for you, sir?" She asked.
Detective Lee and Officer Chad glanced at each other before turning to the old lady. They took out their badge and showed to the elderly.
"Detective Cameron Caiseus Lee, Korean National Police." Cameron introduced himself.
Devius smiled too and said, "Officer Devius Wayne Chad, Sienna Metropolitan Police Agency."
"Oh. I see." She smiled. "What can I do for you, young men? Is there anything I can help you with?" She gladly asked.
"Actually, granny," Officer Chad politely started, "We're here to asked you about a guy wearing a black coat. Someone tipped us that you may have seen him or perhaps knows where he lives?" He continued.
The old lady acted thinking for a while as the two men intently waited for her answer. After some time, she sighed and looked at them. The kind of look that your mom will give you if you go bunjie jumping.

"Handsome, I don't know if I should be telling you this but I'm not the one you should ask about that person. But I can give you the address of someone who can possibly help you." She smiled and handed them a piece of paper, an address written on it.
"Thank you, ma'am." Cameron took the paper and was ready to leave but he was stopped when the old lady held his hand.
"Young man, I am no one to tell you this and I know nothing about your life nor your past, I don't even know why you are looking for this person but I should tell you, if you can't avoid an encounter with him, just always make sure that you're both safe." She said.
Cameron was curious and confused at the same time. He wanted to asked several questions but they don't have enough time to waste at this moment. He can come back some other time to do his thing.
"We will. Thank you, granny. Sorry for troubling you." They both bowed their heads and went back to their car.
As the both closed the car door. Detective Lee looked at the paper given by the old lady and the one that Officer Chad is holding. He noticed that the address of the so-called second witness, is also the address given by the first one.
"Do you think it's credible?" Officer Chad turned towards him.
"Why? Don't you trust the old lady's words?" He asked.
Devius shook his head. "It's not that I don't trust her, I just think something was off." He responded.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, she just warned us, right? That's a warning? Also, I was trying to look inside the house but it was so dark." Devius explained.
"You're thinking too much. Let's just meet the second witness."He said, then Detective Lee started the engine and begun driving.
They headed to a place they're not so familiar with. The road is kind of narrow and rocky. There's a lot of shallow mud even if it hadn't rained that day. The houses are obviously old too. The whole place could be a location for any horror movie, that's how old it was. When they finally reached the address written on the paper, they nod at each other and went out the car.
An old, wooden house was standing straight in front of them. There are some clothes hanged near it. A wooden pale is seen near a covered well. There are some medicinal plants on the surroundings and a scent of smoked things can be smelled. They both carefully begun walking but they were stopped by a man's voice.
"Set one more step on my property and I'll crash you both into pieces." He sounded tough but by the tone of his voice, he was drunk.
They both held their hands up. "We're not here to fight, we just wanted to ask you about something." Officer Chad said in a calm voice.
"Turn around." The man ordered them and the moment they saw him, Devius gulp.

The man doesn't have one eye, it's just a hole and he wasn't even wearing an eye patch. If it was an ordinary person, they would have nightmares upon seeing the man's face. He walked in front of them and stared at them. Examining every part of their face and body. Then he smirked and raise his left eyebrow.
"Staring isn't nice, Mr. Officer." He spoke and Devius quickly looked away.
"Sorry." He apologized
Cameron stayed calm as he always is. But for some reason, the man in front of him look mysteriously familiar. He doesn't know where he saw him but Detective Lee is sure he met him before.
"Sir, we're here to ask you something important-"
"Oh. You're here because of that black coated monster, aren't you?" He asked, cutting Cameron's sentence, still wearing his mysterious smirk.
Cameron and Devius turned to each other. They both find the man mysterious and kind of creepy but something in them is also convinced that he knows something.
"Do you know him?" Detective Lee asked.
The man nodded and gestured them to come in. "How could I not know him? Do you see this?" He pointed to his missing eye. "He took one eye from me." He laughed.
"What?" Devius couldn't believe what he just heard.
"Yes, that's right."
They were suspicious of him but they have to risk it all in exchange of the culprit being captured. The man opened his door and let the two guys inside. He offered them a seat, he gestured them to sit down, where they didn't refused.
"Sir, what do you know about the man in a coat, then?" Cameron couldn't wait to get all the informations so he could put the culprit in jail.
"I know him but I also don't." He said which made both men confused.
"How is that possible?" Cameron questioned.
"I know that he is a monster but I don't know who he is. All I know was that you can chase him but it'll be difficult to catch him or you might never will, unless he let you." The man answered.
"I don't care how difficult it is, I will catch him no matter what." Cameron clutched his fist.
The man faced them with a smirk again. "How can you catch someone who only moves when your eyes are close? Will you be able to see through that lunatic's disguise? He can always be by your side or he can be out of your sight. He can be someone who acts like he cares and he can also be someone who acts like he needs some care. Now, how will you determine a shape shifting monster, Detective?"
"I thought you don't know him that much?" Detective Lee furrowed his eyebrows.
"I don't know the real him but I know that he could be anyone around you now and you haven't even noticed."
"Just get to your point." Cameron was slowly losing his temper.
All the words that this strange guy is saying is giving him a familiar feeling. The one he had already forgotten but still curved in his heart's deepest part. He doesn't like the way he smirks and also doesn't like the way this man looks at him. It's as if he can see his soul. He was talking about the culprit but Cameron felt like he was talking about him.
"This is my point, Detective. You've been blinded as a kid, you can't see the truth because you are blinded by your own desire - to protect kids and to capture criminals." The man continues.
"What are you talking about?" Cameron clutched his fists.
The man took a deep breath. "What I'm saying is, that monster might be using your desire to hide himself. Who knows? Maybe he was always right there near you, watching you but you never noticed."
Devius looked at Cameron because he can sense that his partner isn't comfortable anymore. He can see the tiny drops of sweat on his forehead. Even his knuckles that have turned white because of how tightly he was clutching his fists. Detective Lee opened his lips and was about to speak again when he felt Devius' hand held his arm, gesturing him to be calm. Officer Chad gave him a reassuring smile and nod.
"Sir, what do you mean by that? Can you please be more specific?" Officer Chad asked.
The man smiled and simply said, "You know what I mean, Officer. Because if not, you won't be here."
Devius was confused but Cameron felt something more than confusion. He felt somehow scared. He felt the fear but the worst thing is he doesn't know why he's afraid. Officer Chad noticed it, so he quickly placed his arm around Cameron's shoulder making the latter turn to him. He smiled and nodded at Detective Lee before looking at the man again.
"Sir, we'll leave you our contact details. Please call us when you have some information about the person we are looking for." He took out his card from his pocket and place it on the table.
They both stood up and was about to leave but before they could take a step forward outside the door, they stopped because the man spoke again.
He said, "Just always remember, demon's has more beautiful form than angels. Also, I'm not sure if I can contact you again."
Detective Lee turned to face him. "Was it a warning?" He asked but the man just smiled and shrugged and didn't say a word.
Cameron then just shook his head, thinking that the man is really strange and weird. They both went to the car and sighed as they get in. Both men really expected some progress on this case today but it just seemed that they're not fortunate enough.

The Silver Mana - Book 1: Initiate
I used to be a healthy, young guy with a normal life - I had a career planned in professional soccer, a girlfriend, lots of hobbies, and loads of fun. Until the accident. Which changed my life. A few years later I had adjusted to my new reality, adjusted to being in a wheelchair, adjusted to having someone take care of me 24/7. And then the world changed. Old people and kids did not make it. And neither was I supposed to make it. But never count me out. If anything, I am tenacious. This new world was different. People could do magic. And there were monsters. And what about me? I had mana as well, silver mana. Which no one else seemed to have. The only problem was, I did not know what to do with it. Until I really needed to. Author's note: This is the rewrite of Silver Mana. The first bunch of chapters (until I will have caught up to level 2 of the dungeon) should be quite familiar to people that have read the original. There are some changes in content, but the story follows the original fairly closely for at least the first 150-200 pages. Most of the changes are in the writing, and some of the details of how things work. A few of the side characters get a bit more attention too. Some general comments to avoid disappointment: 1. The MC likes to swear. If you object to reading the word "fuck" at least once and usually multiple times each chapter don't read the book. "Fuck" is such a great, allencompassing word... fuck that; what the fuck?; fuck me! Fuck! one word, expressing so many nuances. And, frankly, the people I know that use fuck as a swear word.. they often use it a lot. 2. If you are looking for immediate progression, rapid advancement of the story, etc.... read another book. This one takes a bit. 3. I am NOT Pirateaba (who is writing The Wandering Inn) or anyone close to that level of productivity. If you expect to read 10k words every 3 days, or even just once a week... sorry. I've got a busy life. This is for fun, I have no patreon, paypal, anything, so I write when it is fun and however much is fun. Not more. And sometimes that turns out to be a decent amount, sometimes nothing. I have another book (Marrow) so that complicated things - basically I switch between the two whenever the muse strikes me.
