《Call Of Death》Chapter 14 : Killer's Trophy 1
Advertisement
It's already 2 in the morning but Detective Cameron Lee and Police Officer Devius Chad are still wide awake looking at the information of the victims. Their belongings, relatives and everything that is connected to them. They both sat on the chair facing each other while the informations are laid on the table.
They've been doing it for the last two hours. Detective Lee stood up and placed his hand under his chin.
"You found something?" Devius looked up to him, he nodded.
"Here, look." Cameron picked up two pictures and said, "Gina Kang, an apron. George Michael, a watch."
"Well, the watched must be expensive because the guy's a professor but the apron? Why would he take the apron?" Devius asked in confusion.
Cameron shook his head. "I don't know but I'm gonna find out." He said.
"So, what about the others?"
"Mence David, his handkerchief. Sherril Henry, a ring. Sara Chain, a lase."
Officer Chad picked up three pictures from Detective Lee. He carefully and neatly placed it on the table. Then he picked up the rest and he laid them on the table one by one too as he uttered the victims' names. "Here's mine. Jona Ingrid, a bracelet. Mateo Jacker, slippers. Eunice Oscars, her beanie and Miranda Jameswood, her notebook."
Cameron furrowed his eyes brows and intently examined the pictures. Everyone is missing something, they are right about the killer's trophy but then, he saw one picture that fell on the floor.
He leaned down and picked up the picture. "What about Niana Penningson? What is she missing?" He asked Devius Chad.
Officer Chad thought for a moment and then shook his head. "She's not missing anything." He replied.
"What?"
"Yeah. Her family went to pickup her things last time and I asked them if something's missing but they said everything's there. She's not missing anything." Devius explained.
"That's impossible." Detective Lee whispered.
'Are we mistaken about the killer's trophy?'
"Hey, guys. You're not sleeping yet?" They both turned to Detective Parker when they heard him spoke.
"Nuh, but we're almost done, Detective Parker." Devius answered.
Kairo walked towards them and sat down. "You looked stressed. What is it?" He asked.
Cameron placed the picture on the table. "We can't find what is missing among Niana Penningson's belongings. If nothing's missing, we're wrong about the killer's trophy." He explained.

"Hmm? Why can't you find what's missing?" Kairo picked up the picture and looked.
"According from her family, all her things are there." Devius responded, Detective Parker just nodded.
After looking at the photo, he smiled and stood up. "Well, you're right. Nothing's missing but if you study this picture correctly, you'll see that a piece of something is missing." He said as he handed the picture to Cameron.
"Then, what is missing, Parker?"
Detective Parker smiled. "You should find out yourself. I'll get going now." He winked and then he left.
Cameron could only shook his head as he looked at the direction where Kairo left. He then stared carefully on the picture, trying to find out what is missing. He can't see anything. Her purse is with her, her shoes, her jewelries. There seemed to be nothing missing but then he saw it.
'What? Gotcha!'
"Hey, Chad, look."
"What?"
"A part of her dress is torn apart." He mumbled, Devius Chad quickly went to him and looked at the picture.
"Woah! You're right. The lower part of her dress is torn apart." He turned to Detective Lee with praising look.
"We're right. All of the victims are missing something. The culprit must have taken them to his lair." He sat down again, biting his lips, somehow relieved.
"Then, if he really took those things as his trophy, there must be something similar about those missing belongings." Devius Chad concluded.
"That's what we need to find out. For now, let's get some rest and prepare for the investigation again tomorrow." Detective Lee started organising the things.
"Yeah, let's do that, senior."
Officer Chad helped him and after that, they both decided to get some sleep because they have to wake up early again tomorrow. Those morning routine has gone on like that for more than a week. They both can't have a proper sleep because they always sleep late and wake up early. They can't even have a good meal because they have to work while eating. They always go out of the headquarters to gather and dig some more information. They kept thinking about what could be the similarities of the missing objects that the culprit had taken from his victims.
They tried looking if the victims bought those things from the same person but no. According to their investigation, the victims are not related to each other. They didn't even meet aside from Miranda and Niana who were at the party.

If there's an animal that could be compared to how they look for nine days, it would be the panda. Black circles around their eyes are visible and their faces turned pale because of too much stressed and workloads.
"Ugh! I'm getting frustrated!" Police Officer Devius Wayne Chad groaned one evening while looking at the list of missing belongings. "I wanted to sleep now."
"You can go and rest now, I'll just continue the work." Detective Lee said without giving him a glance.
Officer Chad pouted and said, "How could I leave my senior alone? I'll go get some drinks and snacks downstairs. What do you want?" He stood up.
"Anything will do. Just don't buy anything alcoholic, we don't need that right now." He warned him.
"Oh."
"What? Don't tell me, you thought of buying liquor?"
Devius just shrugged his shoulders and went out. As he was walking down the stairs, he kept thinking about the objects. There must be something that's similar but it's just hard to figure out. When he arrived at the store, he took some iced and hot coffee because he doesn't know which of which Cameron prefer. He also took some bread for snacks. As he was paying for the things he bought, he saw a kid staring at him.
He smiled and went towards him, "Hey, kid. What are you doing here at this hour? You hungry?" He asked nicely.
The kid shook his head. "My mother is right there. I went with her, mister." He pointed at the lady who was busy buying some soju.
"Oh. Where do you live?" Devius asked again.
"I live next door to your apartment, sir." The boy answered.
"Really? How come I've never seen you before?" He asked, confused.
Da Won didn't know they are neighbors because it's the first time that he saw the kid and his mother. She looked drunk already but she's still buying some alcoholic drinks.
"Maybe because you and that scary guy always comes home late." The kid answered.
He smiled and shook his head before he turned to the boy again. "What is your name, kiddo?"
"It's Michael. My name is Michael Hansell." The boy introduces himself.
Officer Chad smiled. "You got a nice name there. I'm Officer Devius Chad, if you need anything, you can knock on our door."
The kid lowered his head and said in a low tone, "I-I'm kinda shy because the man next door doesn't look nice at all." He must be talking about his senior, Cameron Lee.
Officer Chad muffled his laugh. "Hmm. If you're shy, I can give you my number so you can just call me if you needed something." He suggested.
Michael smiled and nodded as he hand him a ballpen. "Just write your number on my palm, sir."
"Okay, here. Also, you can just call me Officer Chad." He messed up Michael's hair after writing his number.
"Yes. Thank you, Officer Chad." After that, he smiled then he run towards his mother and they both left the store.
Officer Chad paid the things he bought and went out of the store too. When he reach the apartment, he stopped in front of the door and glanced at their neighbor's door. He doesn't know why but he feels worried. It seemed like something bad is going to happen. 'I hope not.' He just shook his head and shove the feeling away but when he was about to reach for the door knob, he realized that he was still holding the pen.
He glanced at their neighbor's door once again and decided to knock on the door and return the pen to Michael. After some time of knocking, no one is opening the door so he just slid down the pen under the gap on the door and floor before returning and entering their apartment.
"What took you so long? I thought you fell asleep om your way." Detective Lee asked when Devius placed down what he bought.
"I didn't know that you have a neighbor." He stated, Cameron put down the paper and stared at Devius in confusion.
"We have a neighbor?" He asked.
"Ah. Yeah? I just talked to the kid."
Cameron examined Officer Chad's expression because he thought he was just joking around but the level of seriousness and in his face tells the opposite. He knows that ever since he lived in that apartment, he doesn't have a neighbor. But he also thought that maybe somebody must have moved in but it wasn't next door. He suddenly felt strange yet just decided to shrugged his shoulder to not freak out Devius. He thought of checking for himself tomorrow morning.

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.
