《Call Of Death》Chapter 11 : A Painful Memory
Advertisement
It's already midnight but Cameron is still wide awake. He wanted to sleep but his eyes won't cooperate. The image of Gong Seuk Tae with fear in his eyes kept playing inside his head. It was as if he saw himself again after very long time. When he stared at the kid, it felt like he's staring at himself.
Many, many years ago. He was vulnerable, hopeless, helpless. When he was a kid, he was already waiting for death to come and get him. He had already given up on life. The fear, the feeling of wanting to be protected by someone but he's all alone. The feeling of wanting to run away but every step is a dead end. The feeling of wanting to shout but his voice was stolen. The feeling of wanting to cry but his tears are dry.
When he finally got out of that cage where he was kept in, Cameron almost didn't know what hope is. He doesn't know what life is. Even when Harold Lee took him in, he doesn't know if he could trust the man because no one has been trustworthy around him ever since he learned how to walk.
Those feelings, it's as if they came back again after seeing Seuk Tae in that situation. There's something that the kid make him feel. After thirty years of living his life, he never felt safe and at ease. Even if he's tough outside, he carried the fear as he grew up. Seeing the poor kid, Gong Seuk Tae, being in the same situation as he was before, he wanted to protect him. He wanted him to feel that he's safe and no one's gonna hurt him. Cameron wanted Seuk Tae to feel the safety he never got.
"I'm going to catch that culprit no matter what. I won't let him hurt Seuk Tae and anyone." He sat up and whispered himself.
Devius is still awake too and couldn't sleep. He sat up and lean on the wall facing Cameron. The light was off so it was dark but he could see Cameron sitting and he could hear him sigh. This is his best ability. He trained so hard so he could clearly see in the dark, like he has some kind of night vision. He stared at him for a while. He looked younger than his age and he could pass as a high school student for someone who doesn't know him. But what got him the most was the emotion in his eyes. It feels like a painful memory was playing repeatedly in his mind. He wanted to tease him but he just couldn't.
Inside him, he felt pitiful towards the man but also admires him. He doesn't have the good first neither second impression towards Cameron but there's something in him that will make anyone admire him even without trying. For the passed few days of Devius working with Detective Lee, he noticed how hardworking he is in this case.
"Hey, senior, you can't sleep too?" He asked, Cameron turned to his direction.

"Yeah, I'm trying to think of some way to catch the killer." He answered.
Officer Chad stood up and turned the lights on. "Do you think it's the same person who killed those people?" He walked towards Detective Lee and sat on his bed.
"Yes. According to Parker and the way the victims died. It must be the same culprit." He answered.
"But, what if he wasn't working alone?"
"Possible but if he has some accomplice, he wouldn't include him in the killings."
"You're right, senior. But, this killer is really weird, right?"
Cameron stayed silent for a while before nodding. "All the signs are the same. The victims received some sort of call before they were killed. Although I can't figure out the connection of the victims to each other, it's obvious that the culprit is the same person who ended their lives." He said in long litany.
"Then, what could be his motive?" Devius asked again.
Detective Lee shook his head. "I have no idea yet but sometimes, murderers kill for no reason but they just want to end somebody's life."
"But Detective Parker said there's a reason behind everyone's crime." Devius shrugged his shoulder.
Cameron turned to him. "Kairo?"
"Yeah. He said there's always a connection. I don't quite understand but it's like, he's saying that there's a reason behind the killings, I just don't know what." Devius explained, Cameron nod.
They both stayed silent for a while. Devius is thinking of what things to ask next because he really wanted to keep talking to Cameron.
Surely, he doesn't have a good first impression about him but as he spent more time with this grumpy detective, he wanted to know what was behind his shell. When he first met the guy, he was really annoyed but after being with him, he felt some kind of feeling where he wants to at least be close to him. He was thinking, even if they couldn't be friends, he would at least wanted to promote their relationship into a closer senior-junior one while Cameron is thinking of how he should ask him to go to sleep without sounding rude.
"Hey—"
"Uhm—" They both cut each other's sentence when they spoke at the same time.
"You can talk first, what is it?" Detective Lee asked.
Devius scratched the back of his neck. "Do you want to grab some drink? I want something to make me feel sleepy." He awkwardly stated.
Cameron thought it wasn't a bad idea. He also wanted to get some sleep and maybe a little alcohol may help so he agreed and said, "Yeah, sure. There should be an open convenient store down there."
Officer Chad smiled happily and quickly stood up. "I'll go get some, just wait here." And with that, he speed out of the apartment and rush downstairs and to the nearest convenient store.
Cameron was left confused at how his temporary partner acted. He noticed that he's kinda childish but he just got so excited for some alcohol. He just shrugged his shoulders and sighed. He's not fond of alcohol but having a sip to make him get some sleep isn't a bad idea.

"Devius Chad, sounds like devil child." He whispered and smiled unconsciously which he immediately banished.
On Devius' part, he just kept smiling while paying for the bottles of soju and some dried squid. Fortunately, there's a korean convenient store nearby. Devius has never had soju before but it wouldn't kill him if he tries. Also, in his head was — Cameron Lee is a korean. After paying, he hurriedly headed his way back to the apartment but he noticed something strange. He felt like someone is staring at him but when he looked around, he couldn't see anyone. So he just shrugged it and returned to the apartment.
"What took you so long?" Detective Lee asked.
Officer Chad just shrugged and said, "I had a hard time finding some dried squid."
"Dried squid?" He asked in confusion.
Devius nodded with a smile. "Yeah. I once saw Daena watching some K-drama, you guys nibble on it when you're drinking, don't you?"
"Huh?" Cameron didn't get him at all.
"Hayst! Nevermind, sunbay. Let's just drink these sojus and munch on these dried squid." Devius said, Cameron just weirdly look at him.
"It's seonbae not sunbay."
"Oh. Maybe I heard the word wrong. Let's just drink, Detective Lee."
"Alright." Cameron simply replied, shaking his head.
'Hes really weird.'
The two men started drinking and soon they almost finished the ten bottles of soju. Cameron who has a very low alcohol tolerance can barely stand up straight. While Devius was still looking fine like he didn't had a sip.
"Chad, I want some fresh air." Cameron called Devius who immediately stood up to help the other maintain his balance.
"Gosh, you only had three bottles and you're this tipsy?" He teased.
"Tch! I'm not an alcohol addict like you." Detective Lee uttered.
"I'm not an alcohol addict either, I just have high tolerance." He reasoned.
Cameron just waved his hand. "Yeah, whatever."
He walked to the window and opened it. He gave out a deep breath as soon as the air touches his face. Devius just watched him from the side. The sadness in his eyes were back again and for some reason, Devius hated it. He likes it more when it's annoyance he saw in those eyes than sadness.
'Maybe I'm drunk and I just didn't know it.' He told himself as he look away.
"Do you know how old I am when I first felt the fresh air touched my skin?" Cameron asked out of the blue, sounding really drunk.
"What do you mean by that question?" Devius asked too.
If he was in his right state, he would definitely not say a word but because some alcoholic substance was in his system he couldn't control it. Or maybe he just have to let something out to at least lessen the burden he has been carrying since he was a child. Maybe he needed the alcohol to be able to rant a little.
"I wanted to tell you a story, Chad but you're not allowed to say anything to anyone." Cameron turned to Devius, hardly maintaining his balance — he's really drunk.
"Okay, I promise." Devius said.
"I was ten when I first knew what a fresh air was. I thought being in the outside world would be a difference but I am definitely wrong. The outside world is far way more dangerous than being locked up inside a small, messy room. It was more suffocating than being in a coffin." Devius just stared at him while Cameron said those words.
All the painful memories came rushing and flashing in Cameron's mind as Devius looked at him in confusion as he see the pain in his eyes. There was no tears but Devius could clearly see pain from Cameron's beautiful eyes. He wanted to look away but it's as if they were magnets. He can't see any tear drop but he can feel Cameron's heart crying out loud.
"Being in a coffin was scary. Death is scary. But having no hope, not having to know what life is, is even scarier. I wanted to run away but everything was a dead end. I wanted to escape but the whole place is a prison. I wanted someone to tell everything will be alright but there is no one to trust."
"Senior..."
"You know the feeling when you wanted to cry but your tears had gone dry, Chad? That's how I felt in those times. I wished I would just disappear."
"Detective Lee..."
Maybe he was drunk but he started hating seeing those eyes in pain. Without any reason, he held Cameron's shoulder and made him face his direction. Devius doesn't know what has gotten into him but he just pulled Cameron into a hug. He wanted him to feel the comfort and warm of his arms and body.
"I don't know what is happening, I wasn't there when you're feeling all those things but I hope I can make you feel better at this moment." He whispered into the latter's ear.
Being in the alcohol's influence, Cameron Lee hugged him back and said, "How I wish someone gave me this tight hug before when I was embraced with pain and fear."
"And how I wish I was there to make you feel safe even with just a little embraced." Devius mumbled.
"Yeah. I wish I had you before, Chad. I wish I had you before." After he said that, he drifted off to sleep.
"Woah!" Because he's taller and heavier than Devius, they both ended fallinh on the floor.
He was on top of Officer Chad who was struggling to get him off but when he got tired, he just let him be and closed his eyes too and fell asleep on that position.
