《I Promise // Haikyuu Nishinoya Yuu》-Chapter 8-

"Then, I'll see you later Haru-chan!" Noya said as you walked into the classroom before he left to go to his own. You fell into your chair, dropping your bag on the floor and resting your forehead on the table.
"Oh, was that Noya-san?" Yachi said, looking out of the classroom window. You nodded, not lifting your head up. You were trying to hide that stupid smile that his name could bring to your face. Noya had insisted on walking you to class because of the 'fans', and you loved that. But now, you had to wait until school was over to see him again, and you would be finishing your incomplete homework during lunch. You sighed and prayed for the lessons to end quicker.
.
.
.
"One minute..."
"30 seconds... soon!"
"2...1..."
"Don't forget the homework. Class dismissed." the teacher announced, sorting the stack of worksheets on her desk.
"Finally..." you sighed, putting your pencil case and notes in your bag.
"Ne, Yachi-san! Let's go change together! Hurryyyyyy!" you stood up from your seat and held Yachi's hand. She quickly packed her things and both of you ran out, mainly you dragging the tired blondie along.
"Yachi-san, you've been more quiet around me nowadays, is something bothering you?" you inquired while putting on your shirt. Yachi ponders for a while before answering you.
"Sorry, I've just been distracted recently, don't worry about it..." she brushed off your question. She wan't acting normal and you knew it, but you didn't want to push her further so you dropped the topic.
"Guys! I have important news for you!" Takeda announces loudly, waving a piece of paper in his hand enthusiastically. The boys had just finished their warm-ups and hurriedly gathered in front of the kind man.
"Tokyo. Away. Games. In 2 weeks, we'll be going to Tokyo for 7 days of intensive volleyball training before you go for the Spring Tournament preliminary rounds!" Takeda adjusts his spectacles as he spoke with confidence. Apparently, Nekomata had invited Karasuno to join the 4 Tokyo powerhouse schools in their annual Golden Training Week, also known as the Tokyo Away Games.
The boys' eyes lit up in anticipation.
"We're going to destroy those shitty boys(again, city boys*)! BRING IT ON! KORRRRAAAAAAAAAAA" Tanaka hyped his teammates and himself up, screaming at the top of his lungs.
"Pfft, shitty boy?" Tsukki mocked silently, laughing together with Yamaguchi.
"Okay okay, calm down no-"
"UWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Noya joined his best friend, running around the gym with Hinata.
"SHUT UP!" Daichi scolded, annoyed that Noya had cut off his sentence. You stood beside Takeda and giggled at the child-like personas the team had. It was nice to see them get along so well but in a weird way.
"But..." Takeda continued, his face grew serious and sat down, motioning for the boys to also sit.
"You all know that your final exams are coming right? If you fail any of your exams, there will be supplementary lessons over the week that we will be going to Tokyo."
Silence. Silence in the gym. Complete silence, for the very first time. Everyone turned to look at the 4 people, now avoiding eye contact with Takeda. Hinata, Kageyama, Noya and Tanaka.
Hinata was basically having a mental breakdown.
"Hey, you'll be fine!" Suga tried cheering Hinata up.
"I've never gotten double digits on a quiz before, will I still be okay Suga-san?" Hinata answered desperately.
"What...?" Suga exasperated, shocked. Hinata had also asked Ukai to help him, but he learned that Ukai was not the best at his studies as well. The poor orange-haired cutie had lost all hope. Kageyama had basically stopped breathing at this point.

The second years got up and started running away.
"Oi, there's nowhere to run! Ennoshita, stop them!" Daichi commanded. Ennoshita appeared in front of the 2, stopping them in their tracks and carrying them back to where the rest of the team was. Daichi was visibly irritated, his veins were popping out from his neck and temples, his eyes were scary and dark.
"Listen up, the 4 of you. There's still a week before before the exams. I need the 4 of you to promise that you WON'T sleep in class, you'll push through the late nights of studying and complete ALL your homework." he instructed fiercely, it sounded more like a threat with his face being THAT scary.
"We need you 4 idiots. We're ALL going to Tokyo."
"Should I be flattered or insulted?" Tanaka whispered to Noya who shrugged his shoulders.
"U-uh, I can help with English and Literature if anyone needs it..." you shyly step up and offer your help. The 4 boys were now sitting in front of you, eyes filled with admiration.
"I studied all the subjects in English in America, so I'm pretty confident with that subject! We also learnt the second year Literature syllabus already, it should be quite reliable I think..." you twirled a piece of brown hair in your finger.
"Hinata's weakest subject is English, Noya and Kageyama's is Literature, so you can help them all out! " Asahi mentions. You put up an 'okay' sign with your hands to Asahi and the 3 boys who had a glimmer of hope back in their eyes.
"Thanks!" The 3 cuties group-hugged you.
"Tanaka, you need help with Math right? We got you." The second and third years stood behind Tanaka and reassured him.
"Guys..." Tanaka teared up.
"Okay, its settled then. We'll end practice early today. Let's go!" Daichi clapped and everyone resumed practice. Everyone's motivation was back and the training went smoothly.
Yachi stood with Shimizu, holding her notebook in one hand and a pen in the other tightly. Before you came along, Hinata and Kageyama would ask her to help them with their work. It was mainly Hinata's attention that she wanted, but seeing that you had not just his but everyone else's focus, her jealously could only grow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The week of intense studying commenced. Everyday during lunch and after school before training started, Hinata and Kageyama would come to your class and study with you. Hinata would engage you in conversations and laugh a lot, while Kageyama was mostly serious. You knew Kageyama had very good memory, so you made use of it to help him with his skills. Hinata was just careless and made the simplest mistakes, so it was easy to help him with English. There was no doubt though, teaching the 2 of them made your day a little brighter.
At times, you would invite Yachi to study together and help the duo. Of course she didn't reject your offers, but she wasn't satisfied that she couldn't have Hinata alone to herself. She secretly appreciated the times that you would ask her, and savoured every second with him.
As for Noya, you would go to each others houses to study and do homework together. Your parents had also reconnected so they didn't see a problem with that arrangement. Both of you would stay in your rooms and you would help Noya as much as you could. Whenever you two met up to study, you would goof a little around but the focus stayed on studying. Noya was extremely motivated to do well, it could have been because you were teaching him and the fact that he wanted to go to the away games.
Even the volleyball trainings would start later so that everyone would have extra time to study. You not only helped everyone with their weak subjects, but also tutored them on other subjects so they could score better overall.
Before you knew it, everyone had taken their tests and trainings were as per normal. You felt that you did pretty well, since teaching others helped you remember the material too. On the last day of your test, you made your way to the second gym where the volleyball girls would host their trainings at. You slowly pushed the doors open and the whole team turned to look at you.
"Misaki Haru?" a tall, short-haired brunette stepped towards you with a friendly smile, sticking her hand out.
"I'm the captain, Michimiya Yui. I'm sure Daichi told you already."
You shake her hand nervously and nod. You didn't know what to expect at so you were quite on guard. Some of the third years approach you as well and introduce themselves. Overall, the girls were pretty nice and that helped you to calm down. You were shocked that some of the second and first years knew who you were, and it was because you were the new goddess in school. You blushed at the statement and rubbed your head.
"Okay guys let's not overwhelm her. We'll start the match now, Misaki-san will be the libero." With that, the girls entered the court and got into position and the match starts.
.
.
"One touch!"
The ball goes flying out to the left side of the court, the opposite direction from where you were positioned. You dashed to the ball and picked it up, sliding on the floor as the ball flew up back to the setter perfectly. It was near the end of the set and you were on top of your game. You could see the ball clearer, you seemed to be able to react faster and move your body with ease, scooping up every spike from the opponent team. You didn't notice the boys entering the gym on the second level and spectating your game.
"NICE RECEIVE!" the team yelled out, ending the first set with a win for your team, the scores were 25-18. Loud cheers and claps erupted from the 12 boys, the whole team had came to support you. Encouragements like 'YOU'RE AMAZING!" and "GOOD JOB HARU!", made you laugh as you waved at them from the court.
"Oh, where's Shimizu and Yachi?" you asked before the second set started.
"They're setting the court up for us in the other gym so they can't come watch." Suga replied. You smiled and yelled an 'okay!', then you returned to the court and got your focus back. Only Hinata was able to notice the dirty looks and the whispers coming from the girls off the court.
The second set ended pretty quickly, your amazing receives threw the opponents off and gave the spiker on your team more freedom.
The girls' spikes are no way as intense as the guys. They'll be able to meet that standard but its sadly obvious that they haven't been practicing a lot... You exhaled, catching your breath and thinking at the same time. It was an easy win for you, the scores were 25-15.
"Wahhh, Daichi wasn't exaggerating, you're amazing Misaki-san!" Michimiya walks up to you and pats you on the shoulder. "I heard about the best libero scholarship, but Daichi didn't mention it so I wasn't sure, but seeing you play..." she paused.
"You're the Guardian Angel, aren't you?"
You were startled. That was the nickname given to you by your friends and the coach in America. You never knew that the name was well-known or that anyone other than the girls on your team knew about.
"Y-Yeah, I am but how do you know about Guardian Angel?" you asked, confused.
"Well, the title was popular but mysterious. The girl who could save any ball any where any time, she barely missed and her receives were always on point. The ball would go back to the setter no matter what. But, the name of the person who held this title was unknown." Michimiya explained.
"Its like Nishinoya, Karasuno's Guardian Deity. He's pretty popular with the first years too, especially after the Seijoh match, Nishinoya kept receiving the powerful serves! It was amazing!" she chuckled.
Seijoh... where have I heard that team?
"It would be so cool if you joined the team, can you imagine? The 2 Guardians in Karasuno together... Anyway, if you joined our club, you would most likely be a regular. The team welcomes you wholeheartedly!" she added on.
"Ahaha, its embarrassing to admit I'm it... I didn't think people would know." you confessed.
"Give me some time to consider. Thank you for having me!" you greeted the girls and left the gym, the volleyball boys were waiting outside for you.
"HARUUU! YOU WERE SO COOL JUST NOW!"
" WHAT WERE THOSE RECEIVES?"
"YOU SCOOPED UP THE BALL SO WELL!"
The team bombarded you with comments on your plays. Your face was flushed and you struggled to answer their questions all at once.
"Haru-chan, why didn't you tell us about your cool nickname?" Suga interrupted, and everyone waited for your answer intently.
"I didn't think it was very important... I didn't know it would be well-known too." you scratched your neck and leaned your head back. The rest of the team once again started the questions and the discussion about the game excitedly.
"That's enough guys, we need to get back to practice." Daichi requested, then he turned back to you.
"You played very well today. So, what do you think?"
"They aren't bad, but they really need to practice more. I'm not very interested in the moment, I'll need more time to think about it." you answered, with a thought at the back of your mind,
Its a good thing no one noticed... Some of the first and second years were already shooting daggers at me, but Daichi doesn't need to know that.
Suddenly, you felt a hand lightly touching your back.
"You were incredible, also, nice receives." Noya smiled, and then ran off to catch up with the rest of the group who had already started going to the gym. You sighed to yourself, getting a compliment from Noya on receives was a special since he was probably the best male libero as of now. A praise about a receive from Noya would brighten up anyone's mood. You jogged up to the rest of the team, walking side by side with Hinata.
"Haru-chan," Hinata whispered, "Gomen, I listened in on the conversation with Daichi just now. You aren't making a decision now because of the other players right? I saw those looks and the way they were gossiping about you..."
You looked down at your feet stepping on the hard ground and nodded. You hated this, you did nothing wrong and yet you were being disliked and criticised, it sucked. You tried your best to put up a smile so that Hinata wouldn't be affected, but then he spoke up.
"Well, you don't have to make the decision now, so just keep being our manager at the moment! We need you, Haru-chan! Also, Guardian Angel is a really cool name for a libero, but I think now, you're the Guardian Angel protecting our team as a manager!" Hinata held your hand and looked deep into your eyes. You felt sincerity over-flowing in his words, bringing tears to your eyes.
"Okay, sunshine!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was the day. The day that everyone had been waiting for, well, waiting in fear.
Results.
The results of the exams determined many things, but the most important one was the away games. You weren't even worried for your own results, but the 3 'students' you had done your very best to help, as well as Tanaka who had help from the other third and second years. Your legs couldn't help but tremble at the thought of how they had done.
Did Hinata pass his English? Tanaka and Math, Kageyama and Noya, Literature....
You fiddled with your bangs nervously and walked carefully to the teacher's desk to collect your results. Unlike the rest of your classmates, you barely hesitated in flipping open your paper and checking your marks.
Okay nice, Math is the last paper I had to get back. I got all A's, but what about the rest? AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
You gripped your test papers and prayed hard for the boys. Yachi noticed your tensed face and laughed.
"What's wrong, Haru-chan? How did you do?" she teased, trying to make you relax.
"I... got all A's." you said, but with a shaky voice. Yachi gasped and was extremely confused.
"Woah, I didn't know you were so smart, Haru-chan! No offence. If you did so well, why are you so worried?" she probed.
"H-Hinata, Kageyama, Yuu-kun, Tanaka senpai... they HAVE to pass, they will right?" you looked up at Yachi, desperate for some kind of confirmation. Yachi simply smiles and nods. Its been a while since you last saw Yachi smile, seeing that she was still the same person helped you calm down and your faith in the 4 increased.
Damn it, legs, stop shaking! I won't be able to walk properly...
"Hinata." I immediately stood up from my seat, my legs refusing to cooperate with me and beads of cold sweat trickling down my forehead. I took baby steps towards the teacher who held the fate of my attendance in the away games. The desk was so far away...
I passed everything surprisingly well, got a B on every other subject, probably because Haru helped me... Now, its just English. Just one more pass, and I'm a free man. Just one more...
"The away games are next week aren't they? Well, I wish you all the best Hinata." she said with a poker face while holding out my test paper.
"S-Sensei..." I stammered out, slowly extending my vibrating arm to receive my fate.
Did I pass or fail? I can't tell by her face ajdkfbiufwkjda
I am calm. Every other subject has had a surprising improvement, all B's for the first time in years. Haru was very helpful, I would never have thought of getting B grades for any of my subjects. Literature is my last one. If I can just get 40 marks, I pass. I'll be going to the away games.
"Kageyama." the teacher called out with my paper in hand. I ran up to the desk and took my results.
Last one.
I have prayed. The second and third years have drilled me on every Math problem there is to be solved on earth. Got a few B's and C's, but that's already better than all fails. I summoned all the courage in me and took my paper from my teacher. He looked pretty relaxed.
I'll pass, I'll pass, I'll pass. Right?
I sat a my desk with a crushed worksheet in my mouth. My nerves were getting the best of me, and I was starting to worry more and more.
This is the first time I've put in so much into my academics. Well, I did it for the sake of volleyball and also, she was so motivated to help me with my studies. Although I'm a year older than her, she can still help me with my work which is admirable. I want to be able to help her too, but I'll have to take it one step at a time.
I gave it my all with whatever time I had left to revise for this test. Please, let me pass. I don't want to miss out on the away games but most importantly, I can't disappoint her.
"Nishinoya Yuu."
Let's go.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"GUYS, HOW DID Y'ALL DO?"
You burst into the gym, panting heavily and gripping your chest tightly. You ran like you were running for your life, your nerves eating you up inside. You hadn't even changed for practice.
The void itself is a truly fascinating ocean where one must chart the various islands or drown in its deadly tidal waves. But the question still remained no matter how you try to hide it in of itself… is there truly other intelligent life out there? Are we alone in this ocean? Those very questions still haunt the minds of those on the crafts themselves as they brace for every jump ready for the unknown and the known. Many would try to explain that yes there is other intelligent life out there whilst other still say no after 2 centuries of continuous flight out of the home system. Still, those are questions that bury deep in the minds of the crew and those at home as the voidcraft jumps to a system with a single yellow star orbited by 8 other planets with one crowning blue jewel being the 3rd closest with its 5 oceans and 7 continents, a planet called Dirt which is inhabited by a primitive species called Humanity. Hello, author here and this is my newest dive into writing particularly for the Writathon currently in progress being my first one. I hope you give me story a try but in case you still want more information on what you’re getting into, below are some pointers about the story itself. First Contact: CTVL is a story about a first contact scenario between an advanced alien civilization and a slightly more advanced modern day humanity on their planet called Dirt. Characters: The story will take place mainly on the perspective of the alien visitors themselves though there will be human POV characters who will show how the rest of humanity react through media and forums. Action: It won’t be an actual alien invasion but you have to see for yourself how well first contact went. Sci-Fi: I will be very forward here, I WILL bend the rules of physics in order to add in parts of the plot and there WILL be parts that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Theme: It will be a brooding story talking about the futility of pe… Just kidding, it’s mostly wholesome stuff to be honest here. Alien: The aliens themselves will… actually why should I tell you, you have to go and read it to find out what the aliens are though I will draw a few things here and there to aid in the process. Extra tidbit: If you are a grammar nazi or someone who really wants a realistic scifi story... this story is probably not for you at all. Anyways, that’s pretty much all I can say before I spoil something major of the plot itself, the story is slice of life so make sure that type of story is what you like because I am terrible with anything else as I found out, anyways, have a good time everyone and good luck to the other Writathon participants.
