《Saving Gracie | ✓》Chapter Fifty Two: Maybe We Are Just Meant To Be Friends?

I watch as Bennet walks towards me, his hands in his pocket and a hood over his head. I stand up and Bennet stops walking, standing directly in front of me.
"Hi," Bennet says and I nod, pointing down at the porch.
"Sit. You need to explain everything before my mind literally explodes." I say and Bennet chuckles and nods. He sits down on the porch and I sit down next to him, leaning against the wood planks that make up the railing. I hear my phone buzz beside me and I pick it up.
I let out a sigh of relief and place the phone back beside me before looking back up at Bennet. I watch as he takes his hood off of his head and I can't help but smile when his brown hair falls to the corner of his face.
"Okay, so what do you want to know?" Bennet asks and I raise my eyebrow at him.
"Aren't you suppose to be doing all the talking?" I ask and Bennet nods.
"Yes but I need to know what you want me to explain." Bennet says and I chuckle.
"Right. Okay, why did James kidnap you? Do you two know each other?" I ask and Bennet shakes his head.
"No, we don't know anything about each other - well, that's what I know. I have no clue about who he is or what he does for a living. Him on the other hand, he probably knows a lot of stuff about me which is how is found me and kidnapped me while I was in my hotel room." Bennet explains and I nod.
"So, anyway, why I got kidnapped too... I have no idea." Bennet says and I frown.
"Are you sure? I mean, you might just forgot-"
"I'm sure, Grace. I know what I know." Bennet smiles and I let out a sigh, nodding.
"Okay. Well, why are you around here? How did you know about me? Why haven't I heard about you before? Why-" Bennet laughs, cutting me off.
"One question at a time." Bennet says and I apologize. Bennet waves me off before letting out a sigh.
"I'll answer your first question. I was around this area because I heard about mom. My adoptive parents kept mom's death a secret from me for a while which is why I probably missed her funeral, yes?" Bennet asks and I nod, a sad frown making its way onto my face. "Anyway, so, after my adoptive parents kept acting suss, I went through their latest emails and messages and thats how I heard about mom. I also found out that I had a sister so I wrote down a few things like your number and full name so I could find you. Then, I saw the information about dad and wrote down the address, realising that since you aren't over eighteen, you would still be will dad." Bennet says and I nod, quite impressed with Bennet's skills.

"So, I decided to leave the house in hope to find you and dad. My adoptive parents were on holiday so I figured that it was the best time to leave so I went. When I got here, I decided to sneak into the house by climbing the side of the house. When I nearly reached the window though, a car pulled out and I saw a guy walk up to the door with a toolbox in his hand. Out of instinct, I jumped down and ran, deciding to go and see dad later when he wasn't busy. Later that day, I came back here and noticed police and ambulance everywhere. I had no idea what happened and then, just as I was about to leave, I noticed you sitting right here," Bennet points to tell spot where he is now. "And you had a lady next to you and a police officer in front of you, clicking in your face. Before you could notice me, I ran back to my hotel room and saw that dad was currently in hospital which explained the police and ambulance vans." Bennet explains and I hold back the tears.
Everything Bennet is saying is making me just want to jump up and cry. I don't know what to say. All I can do is listen and everything that he is saying is fitting together perfectly.
Maybe he is my brother...
"Wait..." I say, finally finding my voice. "Mom and dad would've told me about you. So, why didn't they?" I ask and Bennet shrugs.
"I have no idea. I am still confused as to why they put me up for adoption." Bennet says and I nod. I look down at the grass in thought. Why did you hide this from me, mom and dad? Why did you hide my own brother from me... I ask myself but no thoughts come to mind. I let out a sigh and run my hands down my face.
All of a sudden, one thing appears in my mind and I gasp. I turn to the bag beside me and pause.
The tape recorder!
I open up the back and search for the tape recorder. When I find it in the bottom of the bag, I pull it out and hold it in my hands.
"A tape recorder?" Bennet asks and I nod.
"I found this in our parents bedroom. I haven't listened to it yet but maybe this has the answers that we both are dying to know." I say and when I look up to see Bennet's reaction, I notice that he has a wide grin on his face. I furrow my eyebrows in confusion and frown.

"Why are you smiling?" I ask and Bennet chuckles.
"You said 'I found this in our parents bedroom'." Bennet says and I nod.
"Yeah... so?"
"Think about it, Grace." Bennet says, the smile still on his face and when I realise what I said, I can't help but smile.
"Well, I just need one last question answered and then I will definitely be able to call you my brother." I smile and Bennet nods.
"Then see what it says." Bennet says and I look down at the tape recorder and let my eyes fall on the little triangle which is pointing to the right.
Am I ready for this?
I gulp and let my thumb press the button. I feel my chest become tight and I can't help suck in a deep breath, scared of what I am going to hear.
Maybe it won't have the answers for Bennet and I at all? Maybe it is just all tape recording of nothing.
All of a sudden, I hear a lady begin to speak. "So, what do you think the main problem here is?" The lady asks and I move closer to Bennet, holding the tape recorder in front of the both of us.
"Maybe we are just meant to be friends?" I hear a women ask and all of a sudden, my finger presses the pause button out of shock.
That's my mom! That's my mom's voice!
I feel tears sting in my eyes and I can't help but bite my lip. It is has been forever since I heard her voice!
"Press play, Grace." Bennet says softly and I can't help but let the first tear fall. I press the play button and try to control my shaking hand.
"Or maybe your hiding something..." I hear my father say and my heart squeezes at the sound of his voice. My hand begins to shake more but Bennet grabs my wrist softly, stopping it from shaking. I look over at him and he smiles. I bite my lip and look back down at the tape recorder.
"What would I be hiding?" My mom asks, her tone full of confusion.
"A baby." My father says and both Bennet and I gasp.
"Where is this baby?" The lady asks and my father let's out a laugh.
"Oh in Rose's stomach, of course." My father says and my mom sighs.
"Okay, it's true. I'm pregnant but I'm only eighteen! I'm not ready to have my first child at this age! I don't know what to do or how to do my job as a mother! On top of that, I'm scared as hell!" My mom explains and the lady sighs.
"Okay, I think the problem-"
"You don't have to be scared, Rose. I'm here for you. I will be with you every step of the way, even if we aren't ready for a serious relationship." My father says and my mom sighs.
"I know. Thank you."
"So, as I was saying-" All of a sudden, the tape recorder stops and I gasp, looking down at the recorder.
"What the hell just happened?" I scream, beginning to bang the tape recorder on my knee. Unfortunately, the small screen goes blank and my eyes widen, the tears falling down my cheeks.
"No, no, no-" Bennet grabs my hand and stops me from doing any more damage to my knee. He looks down at me and sends me a weak smile.
"Grace, we both got what we wanted. We got our answers."
"No, you got your answers! I didn't get mine!" I protest and Bennet raises his eyebrow at me.
"What did you want answered, Grace?"
"I wanted to know why they didn't tell me!" I explain and Bennet sighs, bringing me into a hug. I begin to sob and hold onto Bennet as if my life depended on him.
"Grace... they couldn't tell you. They just... couldn't."
