《Low Tide \ JJ Maybank》Ch 34

John B told us about the missing gold as we sat out on the dock. Apparently Rose had bought the house and Ward cleared out the gold and stole it.
"You sure he got all of it?" Kie double checks.
"Every bar." John B answers. He was laying down across the dock, with one leg thrown over the other. "The whole enchilada."
"God, that fucking dick." I say shaking my head. I look over at JJ. He was being oddly quiet. Not voicing his usual opinions.
John B grunts as he pulls his cast off his arm. He throws it across the dock. "Look, it's not like expected a happy ending or some shit."
"John B." Kie says.
"What?" He answers exasperated. "Kie, it's a hairline fracture. Who cares?"
"You should care. Your arms gonna be messed up for life."
"Ignoring it will make it worse." I agree.
"It's fine. See?" John B holds his arm up in the air and wiggles his fingers.
Footsteps sound from behind me, stomping down the dock. I turn to see Pope running down the dock.
"Guys!" He yells. "Guys. Oh, god. I ran all the way here." He pants heavily.
"You alright?" John B asks, glancing at him.
"How was the interview, Pope?" JJ asks.
"Don't ask. JB... Look, I'm sorry, dude. About everything. And Kat, last night, I was a dick. You are my best friend."
"It's fine." John B says slightly agitated.
"But- but I don't have a lot of time," Pope continues. "And I have information that is tactically relevant. So, before I had my interview, my dad said he was going down to the private airstrip to cut palms for Cameron's big plane. Because it was too heavy, it needed a longer landing strip to take off. So, I'm there in my interview, think omg to myself, 'Hm, why would Cameron need a longer airstrip to take off? What could be so heavy to weigh it down?'"
"Gold." JJ realizes.
"He's flying out the gold." I say.
"That's right." John B confirms.
"Exactly." Pope says. "Guys, this is our chance, but it leaves tonight, and we have to go."
"Guys, we can't give up now." Kie agrees.
"What's the plan, big man?" JJ asks my brother.
"We're gonna take that shit back." A smile spreads across JJ's face.

We laugh as we run down the dock to the car.
"Let's do this!" Pope yells.
"Come on, guys!" Kie shouts.
We quickly climb into the car, getting ready to go the airstrip. John B climbs in the front seat and starts the car. He pulls down the street, headed to the strip.
An excited energy fills the back of the car as we get amped up about stealing back the gold. I can hardly hold still with the nerves and excitement I felt.
When we get close, John B pulls up next to the strip, behind a chain link fence to conceal us. We all get out of the car and watch the plane. My brother uses binoculars to see exactly what's going on. He drops the binoculars down.
"What?" Kie demands.
"It's Sarah."
"She's with him?" Pope asks confused.
John B lifts the binoculars back up. He watches for a second. "Wait a minute. He's hurting her."
"What?" Kie and I ask at the same time.
"They're fighting."
Kie takes the binoculars, looking.
"Holy shit." John B says.
I see the propellers on the plane start spinning rapidly. "Oh, shit." I mumble.
"Wait, so she- What? I had no-" JJ stumbles over his words before Pope cuts him off.
"Hey! What are you doing?" He asks walking toward the van as my brother gets in the car.
"John B, where are you going?" Kie asks loudly.
"Hey! Hey!" We all yell as he starts the car.
"John B!" Kie yells. My brother puts the car in reverse and backs up, far from the fence and where we stood.
He begins to drive forward, speeding up quickly as he drives toward the fence.
"Hey!" Pope yells.
"Hold on!" JJ tries.
"Dude, stop!" Kie demands.
"Don't be a hero, dude! John B!" JJ grabs me and pulls me away from the cars path. Pope and Kie follow.
"Oh, fuck!" I yell as I watch my brother ram through the fence with the van. The tires screech as he regains control of the swerving car.
We run at the now gaping hole in the fence.
"What are you doing?" JJ yells.
"John B!" I yell. "Come back!"
"What are you doing, man?" Pope shouts.
I stop everybody. "Guys, wait. Don't draw attention to us."
We watch as the plane turns around, getting ready to take off down the runway. John B speeds up the car, driving parallel to the plane. John B speeds up in front of the plane before drifting in front of the plane, blocking its path.

I gasp as the plane accelerates down the runway, toward my brother. JJ grabs me and pulls me into his chest to keep me from watching.
"They stopped, it's okay." JJ says letting go.
Pope turns to us as sirens ring out loudly. "Guys, I can't get arrested."
"I'm on probation." JJ says.
"Yeah, yeah. You can't be here." I turn to my boyfriend, my hands rest on his chest.
"Look, we're no good if we're all in jail." Kie agrees.
"Come on." Pope says turning around. We all sprint away.
We make it to some storage area. It was filled with junk and broken objects that people had just thrown aside. I trip over a plank of wood.
A plane whirs over head. I run out from underneath the cover and see the Cameron's plane flying over head. I feel my heart drop in disappointment. I can't even imagine how my brother felt.
"There goes the gold." JJ says. "Shit!" He kicks a plastic chair, shattering it.
"Fuck!" Pope yells angrily. Pope throws things around. "God damnit! Shit! Fuck!" He repeatedly hits things and screams.
"P! Come on! Stop!" I yell. I walk over to him, placing a hand on his back as he continues to hit things. I slowly move around to the front of him. I brace my hands on his shoulders, slowing him down. I grab the bat as he's about to swing again. He freezes so he doesn't hit me. "Pope! Calm down!"
He collapses into my arms, hyperventilating into my shoulder. I feel him start to cry. I run a hand up and down his back, trying to calm him down.
He sits down on a wicker bench. We all watch as he continues to cry and breathe deeply. None of us say anything, unsure what to do.
"Yeah, dude." JJ finally says. He walks toward our friend. "I was wondering when this was gonna happen." He holds out his juul to Pope. "Here you go, Chief. A little weed never hurt no one."
"J, I don't think that's gonna help." I speak up.
"Relax, Kat."
"You know he doesn't smoke." Kie says.
Pope takes the juul from my boyfriend.
"Well, maybe not today." JJ sits next to Pope, putting his hat on.
"Yeah, what is that gonna help?" Kie asks.
Pope looks up at Kie. "I lost my scholarship. Walked out in the middle of the interview. Every- It's gone. It's not gonna happen."
"Pope, you're incredibly smart. You get straight A's and take extra curriculars. You can get other scholarships." I tell him.
He shakes his head. "That was the only one I was lined up for."
"You did that for us?" Kie asks.
"No, not for us." Pope stands up, getting in Kie's face. "For nothing."
"Pope, step back." I say lightly nudging him back from Kiara.
JJ grabs Pope around the shoulders. "I'm here for you, Pope. Welcome to my world, okay?"
"J.."
"What, Kat? He's right." JJ raises his voice at me. "It doesn't matter anymore."
I shoot a look at him. An annoyed expression crosses my face.
"What?" He demands.
"No, you're not getting snappy with me. I'm not doing that right now." I tell him.
"I'm just trying to help him out." JJ says.
"Okay." I hold my hands up in surrender. "I don't wanna fight." I say softly.
"I'm sorry." His face softens. He presses a kiss to my temple in apology.
"Me too." I say wrapping my arms around him.
I see Pope focus up on something behind us. I whip around and see my brother.
"John B!" I yell running over to him. I wrap my arms around his neck in a hug. His arms wrap around my waist. I feel him take a deep breath into my hair.
"Dude, dude, you good?" JJ asks frantically.
I pull away looking at my brother. I grab his hands looking at the blood that had spread over his palms.
"Is this yours?" I ask.
"Hey, you okay?" JJ asks.
"John B, are you okay?" Kie says loud.
A siren echoes behind us. I turn to see a police car turn the corner.
"Shit." Pope says as we all duck down.
"I grab my brothers face and make him look at me. "I need you to talk to me, okay, big brother? Are you okay?"
He gives me a small nod against my hands.
"Is the blood yours? Are you hurt?
He shakes his head.
"Okay." I pull him into another hug. "It's gonna be okay."

Sometimes my voice dies in my throat, buries itself beneath waves of crippling suffocation, burns itself out as cold hands tear at my laced skin. I have smiled while my eyes have cried and pleaded, my wrists numb, my lips wobbling and blue, and stars escaping this dark night that I'm trapped in. I long for a darkness that gives way to light. But I do feel the warmth of petals gathering and scattering in my cold bones, and imagine the touch and the sweetness of a kiss, and my heart rises to the surface of this sea and finds a sky painted by passing artists remaining far above our heads. I'm breathing out all the words I've kept locked under the pages of my breaking mind. And by doing so, I'm going to heal.TRIGGER WARNINGS: depression, anxiety, self harm, suicidal thoughts, OCD, panic attacks
