《Low Tide \ JJ Maybank》Ch 11

The sound of a car horn catches my attention. I was hanging out behind Heyward's with Pope and JJ. JJ was smoking while Pope was working on something. I lean against the wall next to JJ. He blows a cloud of smoke out. I cough, choking on it. I take the vape pen out of his hand and pocket it before walking toward my brother in the van.

"Hey!" JJ yells chasing after me.

"This better be good." Pope says following.

We drive to the Wreck to get Kiara.

"Go get her, P." I tell him.

"Why me?" He asks looking up at me.

"You like her."

"How does that correlate?" He asks again.

"Bye!" I yell out as gets out of the car.

He disappears inside.

"So what did you guys do earlier while we were in the lighthouse?" My brother asks.

"Uhh.." JJ hesitates.

"We sat in the van and waited for you. Then the cops came so we booked it. I dropped the van off and picked up my Jeep. So I'll need to get that later."

Pope pops out the front door. "She said she's not coming."

"Why not?" JJ asks. "What did you do to her John B?"

"Shit. Hang on, I'll deal with it." John B says.

Before he can get out of the car, I'm walking up to the restaurant to talk to Kie. I knew my brother had done something dumb and she probably didn't want to talk to him.

I walk into the restaurant and find Kie spackling a wall.

"Hey, Kie."

"Hey, Kat, I'm just not interested right now." She tells me.

"Okay, I know my brother is being ridiculous right now, but we're in this together. You have to come. I know it's pointless."

"Is he still concocting?" She asks walking away.

I follow after her. "Of course he is, that's what he does."

"Kat.."

"Kie, what happened between you two?" I ask grabbing her hand.

"John B kissed me and I rejected him."

"Well good." I say. Thank god. "Kie, come on. It's stupid, I know. I'm not a fan either, but we can't leave him behind, okay?"

"Okay, fine. But I'm doing this for you, because I don't wanna listen to your begging."

"Good!" I say smiling. "Come on." She rolls her eyes with a smile.

We walk back outside and get in the van, ready to actually go this time.

"Kat works her magic again." Pope states shaking his head at me.

"JB, you're back in the friend zone." I announce to my brother.

He laughs. "Okay."

John B starts the car again and heads down the road. As he drives it gets dark outside. I was starting to get sleepy.

"You mind if I just relax on this one?" JJ asks. "It's been a long day, and a lot of weird stuff's gone down. I'm just gonna lay low." A look of concern crosses my face as I look at him. He notices and tries to hand me the cigarette in his hand. "Oh, did you want a hit of this?" I give him a look saying obviously not.

"Look, I know I was wrong about the lighthouse. And about everything else going on. But I was right about one thing. Okay? My dad is trying to tell me something."

John B pulls up outside the gate of a cemetery. It was dark, and honestly terrifying. We start to get out of the car but I stay back, nervous.

"Hey, come on." John B says.

"This place is scary." Kie peers into the cemetery.

Pope grabs my hand to comfort me and pulls me with him. I walk very close to him as we wander into the graveyard.

"John B, what are we doing?" Kie asks nervously.

"Shut up!" He demands. "You know how you're trying to remember a song but you can't remember who sings it?"

"Yeah."

"So, Redfield. This whole time, I thought it was a place, right? But it's not a place."

I suddenly realize what he was talking about. "It's a last name." I say.

"Right." He hold the lantern up to a giant tomb. The last name is written across the top. "See, our great-great-grandmother Olivia Redfield."

"Redfield was her maiden name." I look up at the tomb again.

John B analyzes the tomb. "Help me with the door. Come on."

Pope steps forward to help. "All right."

"One, two, three.." They push on the door, trying to get it open.

"Are you pushing?" Pope asks.

"Yeah, I'm pushing."

"Come on."

When the door doesn't budge, JJ joins. "Hold on, I got it."

"This door is like 700 pounds, it's not gonna budge." Pope says.

"We didn't get this far to get this far, all right?" JJ say seriously. "We got this."

A snake crawls out, scaring us all. I let out a scream jumping away. The boys all stumble away from the door.

"Woah, woah, woah!" Pope yells, scared.

"That's a moccasin, all right." JJ informs us. "Ye old Dr. Cottonmouth. Death in tall grass." JJ begins to bark at the snake.

"JJ, shut up. Shut up!" Kie demands

"You're gonna wake the fricken dead, man." Pope says.

"They're afraid of dogs. Everyone knows that. Wait, hold on, hold on. If there's one, there's probably dozens."

"Stop," Kie begs. "You're scaring me."

JJ begins to bark again.

"J, shut the hell up." I say.

"Just making sure it's clear."

"Shut up, shut up." Pope orders. "John, look. We're not getting in there, all right? It's not budging. "We should probably just go."

Kie shines her flashlight at the tomb. "I can get through." She notices.

"What?" John B asks. "No, no, no, no. You think you're gonna fit through that hole?"

"Look, this is about your dad. And honestly I don't really believe it but you deserve to know the truth. Kat does too. I'll do it."

"No." John B says again.

"I'll go with her." I state.

"Okay." JB says.

"Absolutely not." JJ denies.

"JJ, please." I beg.

He shakes his head staying quiet but I knew he wasn't gonna try to stop me. "I'll get those." He says pulling the old vines away.

John B and Pope hold the vines back while JJ gets ready to boost us inside.

"I'm gonna boost you, all right. I've seen it in the movies several times. Ready?"

"Yeah." I say stepping onto his hands.

"Please be careful, Kat." JJ says seriously.

"Remind me what we're looking for." Kie mutters.

"You'll know when you see it." John B says.

"Helpful." I mumble sliding through the hole. Kie drops in next to me a few seconds later.

"Okay, flashlight?" Kie asks.

"Yeah, here." Pope hands one down to us.

We start to shine the flashlights around the room, looking for anything.

"You guys alive? You got, like, a- a heartbeat and everything?"

"Yes, John B. We have a fucking heart beat." I retort.

"Good, that's good."

"Uh, we need some more light." Kie tells our friends.

"Yeah, here, I got it." My brother hands down another lantern to us.

"Ooh, yeah. That's better, thank you." I say.

Kie stares at something, catching my attention.

"Find anything?" JJ asks. "Is there gold?"

"Oh my god." Kie mumbles. I was too shocked to say anything.
